Beautiful Knife from CRKT

CRKT Elishewitz Pharaoh Button Lock Knife

Rating for this product: 5 May 29, 2010

OK, first, this is not your usual everyday pocket knife. It's big. That shouldn't have caught me by surprise since they put the dimensions right in front of your face, but it still did. It's not so big that you couldn't carry it every day, just might raise some eyebrows when people see you take it out. As far as quality goes, it's an absolutely beautiful knife. Very sturdy, great blade and really smooth action when opening/closing. Not assisted, but you can flick it open with barely any effort. Same for closing. Takes about 2 tries to practice, then you'll have it. The lock system is designed really well. Everything is in the right place so that you only need 1 hand to operate, but it's still very safe. This is a no-doubt 5 star knife in my opinion. At the SAC price (I paid $30 !!!) it's a CRAZY deal. I don't think I would personally pay full price, but that's not to say it isn't worth it. I'm just cheap.

Super High Quality Jacket

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2010

I absolutely love the feel and performance of Polartec Power Shield. Kudos to BC for making such high quality jackets at such competitive prices. A few more comments:

1. sizing - I'm 6', 185 and could wear either the L or XL. The L is nice because it fits my waist better. However, it is a little snug in the shoulders/pits for me, and doesn't allow a lot of layering. The XL fits great everywhere except the waist, where it is a little baggy. This wasn't a problem with the original, as it seemed to have a more tapered fit?? Too bad.
2. despite what the specs say, there is no wrist stash - that's the old model. this has the obvious outer chest pocket.
3. Highly water resistant is accurate. I've worn all of my Polartec Power Shield jackets (i have 3) in downpours, and they will let water through...not just the seams or zippers...the actual material. But it does take a pretty heavy rain.
4. A general comment - I am really disappointed to find out that BC.com is transferring their product line over to the 'Stoic' name. Same stuff, I know, but:
a.) the goat logo is way cooler than the stoic one, in my opinion
b.) the colors of the Stoic stuff are just awful. I don't know what they are thinking. Even some of the BC.com stuff was starting to get a little silly looking due to color choices, but the Stoic color combos are just ridiculous. Please don't discontinue the goat brand. And by the way, the original Shift softshell was the greatest jacket you guys ever made...why change such a good thing???

Number of Stars Depends on What You Pay

Backcountry.com Siphon Street Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Backcountry.com Siphon Street Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2009

This hoody is super comfy and seems to be very well built. However, there is NO WAY it is worth the regular price. This is nothing more than a nice, stylish comfy hoody. There is nothing technical about it, and I doubt it would do much for you in harsh weather. There is barely any wool in it, so it seems a little cheap that they advertise it as such. All this being said, I paid just over $30 dollars for it on SAC, which was a great deal. If you can get it for that, I think its worth 5 stars. Anything more, and you will be disappointed. Also should mention that I sized up based on some of the reviews, but I don't think it was necessary. Wash however you want...it wont shrink.

NOTE TO WORLD: stop making any other jackets

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2009

because this is the best, most versatile jacket ever made. I got it a while back and wanted to use it a bit before I reviewed it. PERFORMANCE: Repels water like crazy. I've yet to see any water soak into the material (I have some things that are 'highly water resistant' but don't live up to it). Crazy light as far as weight goes, and blocks wind perfectly. Insulation is light, but I think it is meant to be layered with. I've worn it with the BC Rime under it (at TShirt under that), and don't need anything else. THE FIT: I got a large and its perfect. This is what I wear in pretty much everything. Length is spot on, and not bulky anywhere. Athletic cut, which is nice. I'm pretty athletic, but not exactly in perfect shape, and no problem with the fit around the stomach. Arms are long, but not so long that there is any issue. There is plenty of room to layer...I've worn a heavy weight Icebreaker and the Rime under it at the same time, and I felt wonderful. BOTTOM LINE: buy it. It's worth the money. If you get it at the SAC price, that's just gravy...but find a way to get one, however you do it.

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2009

I'm totally addicted to Icebreaker, and buy pretty much everything that shows up on SAC. This is oen of my favorites. Fit is perfect and extremely comfortable. Not sure why they didn't put thumb loops on this one - all the other 260 wieght shirts have them. But no biggy. I am 6', 180, athletic build and the large is perfect. Buy it. It will be your favorite too.

The Backcountry.com Goat Organic Cotton Hooded Sweatshirts are enzyme washed so the shrinkage is limited to 5% or less, this equals less than half a size.Just my two cents - I throw mine in the dryer every time I wash it, and it still fits perfectly. That 5% or less thing above is definitely true

I take it all back

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

This is my second review of this jacket. I originally said that I wouldn't pay full price for it - now I disagree. If someone stole the one I have, I would probably pay double to get it back. This is hands down the best lightweight pullover I've ever seen. The PowerShield softshell material is head and shoulders above any other jacket material. Super functional - blocks even moderately heavy rain, nearly all wind, and oh so comfortable. The lining is perfect. The only thing I would warn of - I ordered a Large, then returned for XL (6',180, broad shoulders - also, the little extra length in the torso was nice...if you like a close fit, no need to order up). It would be nice if the logo was embroidered, but that's just me being picky.

It would be great if there was a fabric detail pic for the lining. How does everyone feel about the lining? Is it comfortable? How is the fit of the jacket? I have read a lot of recent reviews on backcountry.com brand stuff that say the front is short.

Sadly Disappointed

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 6, 2008

I was really pumped when I bought this piece - but several complaints now that I have it. Don't get me wrong...it's ok, and pretty comfortable despite the following complaints:
1. It's very short in the torso. I even sized up (as I do in many things) due to broad shoulders, but it's surprisingly short. I'm not sure why it would be designed that way.
2. The stitching looks rather cheap. There are loose threads in several places and while there are no holes, I wouldn't be surprised if some developed sooner rather than later.
3. The zipper guard (or whatever they are called) at the top of the neck is really big - to the point that when you unzip the neck it looks silly. Strange that in the pic this isn't obvious, but I found it true. Maybe it sounds silly, but aesthetically, I think this is the biggest drawback.

Some PROs: the material combination used is wonderful, and despite not looking as great as I hoped (due to neck and short torso) it is extremely comfortable. Really nice that it has thumb holes...wish more shirts like this started making these standard.

I've never bought a backcountry.com brand piece that wasn't 5 stars until this, so I imagine the next generation of this will be sweet. Maybe wait for that. They are certainly on the right track for a great shirt.

Good jacket overall

The North Face Volt Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Volt Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 17, 2008

I like it a lot - fit is ever so slightly on the baggy side, but no need to size down. Nice Fall/Spring jacket, but not all that warm. I wear it under a shell quite a bit. Repels light rain nicely, but I have run through some downpours (like car to house sprint) and found that heavy rain can get through.

Overall, happy with the purchase, even at full price.

Icebreaker Solo Superfine140 Shirt - Long Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2008

Icebreaker makes the best baselayer available. I started with this one, and now have 3 different kinds - I love them all. I actually sized up on this one, but it wasn't really necessary. Seems to have a similar fit to the BodyFit...not a whole lot more room. The material is crazy thin, but so far very durable, which is impressive. No worries about it loosing its shape. A++.

Arc'teryx Epsilon AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Epsilon AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2008

Yes, I really like the jacket. I got it at the SAC price quite a while back. The feel of the outer material is a little hard to describe, and not exactly ~soft~ to the touch - kind of waffley or something, but it does move nicely with your body, and keeps the rain and wind out like nothing else. Runs pretty slim, so you can't wear a whole lot under it (6' 180 and I have the L). In the end, I'm happy with my SAC purchase, but would never pay full price for it.

Nice ligthweight material, and super soft. I am 6' 180lbs and returned the L for an XL. The L was ok, but was a pretty close fit - not as casual fitting as I like my hoodies, so you might want to size up if you are like me. Haven't had any cold weather to wear it in yet, but seems warm despite its light weight.

The fit is pretty true - I am 6', 180 and got a large (which is what I normally get) and it fits just like a normal jacket that i can wear a long sleeved shirt under. Its surprisingly warm for how light and thin it is, although below 45 or so I definitely need another jacket over it.
