  • Stomping Grounds:

This summer I'll be in Alaska, but Michigan is where I spend the majority of my time.
  • Bio:

They told me "do what you love and you'll be successful." I believed them, so I will graduate with a degree in photojournalism and a minor in outdoor recreation. I love being in the outdoors be it backpacking or mountaineering, and photography helps me tell the story.

My strategy seems to be working so far as I will combine both passions for a multimedia internship in Denali National Park this coming summer.

This is one of my favorite shirts and because of the wicking material, it'll be in my pack the next time I'm out. They say that it fights odor as well, but it still has that distinctive poly smell after wearing it a day or two.

I should mention that my Z2's are size 11, but in the flips I had to get a size 12. The 11's cut into my feet.

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2009

Good warm fleece. I wore it all winter under the Ascentionist and I never had complaints. I was a little put off by the fuzzy exterior at first, but I still wear it because of the performance.

This is the shoe that is most often on my feet in the summer months. I got a pair on sale in Colorado last year, and they have been steller. I have a pair of Z2's as well, but I reserve those when I know I'm going to be active. For going to town, or hitting the beach, these are the sandals.

Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2009

I got my Chaco sandals two years ago and they have been my primary summer shoe ever since. I'd say they excel doing day to day outdoor activities and around the water. I made the mistake of hiking doing 700 feet vert. and I smashed my toe on the way down. Blood in Chacos is no fun. I'm not sure about the toe strap. While I love the security it adds (I've bouldered in them) I've struggled with the adjustment. It seems to tighten up after lots of activity.

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's

May 12, 2009

I know this question is old, but I will answer for anyone else looking. Last Saturday I wore this jacket out in a steady rain (although not a down pour) and it soaked through the shoulders within a twenty minutes. The jacket excels for what it is meant to do, provide protection against the snow and wind, but don't mistake it for a rain jacket. Although it'll do for a dash from the car to the bar.

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2009

I used these gaiters on a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks last winter and they were great for the hike in. We had to break a trail, but the snow was only about a foot and a half deep, so these were tall enough to wear and they kept my legs dry. I prefer these to wearing bulky snow pants any day. Also, I should note that I choose these because of the heavy duty materials. They don't feel wimpy, and I would be comfortable walking through a torn bush with them on.
