Ruffwear Bark'n Boots Grip Trex - Set of 4

January 12, 2009

We bought these after trying several others and after a camping trip where long hikes made for sore paws. Ouch! These are definitely paw savers. They are easier to keep on with the socks, and you have to adjust them after 5 min or so, then they stay on no problem.

The North Face TKA 100 Samantha Fleece Vest - Women's

The North Face TKA 100 Samantha Fleece Vest - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 23, 2009

I bought this vest to wear while in the patrol room as uniform and as a layer while out on the hill. It is nice and warm, but not bulky. Great as a mid layer or outer layer in spring-like conditions. It fits true to size. The black is not as true/dark as shown in the pictures; it is more like a really dark gray.

Perfect for Patrol

Black Diamond Alpine Bod Harness

Black Diamond Alpine Bod Harness

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2009

The lightweight compact design allows it to fit in any patrol pack. It's a breeze to put on without removing your skis, snowshoes, or crampons. It is very durable and pretty comfortable. It will take you confidently through that chair evac or over-the-side rescue. Besides that, you can't beat the price.

Comfy & Convenient

DAKINE Heli Pro Backpack - Women's - 1200cu in

DAKINE Heli Pro Backpack - Women's - 1200cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

I really like this pack and it has served me well in a variety of conditions, from Mammoth (skiing) to Death Valley (hiking). The ski loop makes it easy to trek your gear with free hands. The hip belt is well suited for woman's unique curves (and has great little pockets). The only disappointing feature is the way that the hydration bladder secures in the back. Nonetheless, I would buy this pack again!

Great Pack, Great Harness!

Ruffwear Palisades Pack II

Ruffwear Palisades Pack II

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2009

The best feature about this pack is that it is detachable from the harness, and the harness is tops! We have a 60 lb lab/basset mix (looks just like a lab, but legs are half the length) and she wears a small. The pack itself is a little bulky, but the internal compression straps help slim down the profile. The pack holds a lot (food, treats, wallets, keys, toys, etc.) and the hydration packs are decent as well, although we use them more as weight to exercise her, than we do to store water for her to drink. The pack and harness have held up fantastically after over a year of RUFF use. We use the harness daily, and the pack at least once per week in a variety of conditions/terrains and are very satisfied. Jaeger loves it too! (She seems so proud when she wears it.)

For a little more $, you can get a lot more pack.

Ruffwear Approach Pack II

Ruffwear Approach Pack II

Rating for this product: 3 January 2, 2009

We originally bought this pack (the Approach Pack II) for our pup, but were disappointed to learn that the pack did not separate from the harness. The compartments are decent and hold a lot, but do not allow much for organization. After seeing the upgrade, the Ruffwear Palisades Pack II, we knew that a little more dough meant a lot more pack. I would recommend that you check out the Palisades packs (http://www.backcountry.com/store/RUF0003/Ruffwear-Palisades-Pack-II.html) before buying the Approach Pack II. The detachable feature is well worth the price difference, especially when the harness costs $20 on its own! By the way, our dog Jaeger is a 60 lbs lab basset mix (somewhat compact for her weight) and wears a small.

Great, but not for the gals.

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

These snow shoes are really well made, I was very happy with the quality. I actually bought these at another outfitter where their "gear expert" told me that the men's 25 would work for me since they were out of the women's 25... NOT SO! They were to wide for my stride, and I could not use the ascent feature because my foot is to small. Needless to say, I returned them and let that so-called expert know that he was quite mistaken. Nonetheless, my love was very happy with his. They were light and worked well for a 4 mile in fresh pow.

10 degrees and dropping!

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Women's

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

My love has the men's version and was raving about it, so I gave it a go. I love it. It is not windproof, but I was plenty warm with two merino wool layers below at just below 10 degrees F, with winds at about 15 mph. I was bummed to discover that there were no vent zips, but it breaths well. I ordered my usual size, and it matched the sizing chart indicators, but it was a little big. I was hoping to use it as a mid layer, but it is working great as a soft shell. Very satisfied nonetheless!

NSP Life Saver!

The North Face Liberation Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Keeps you warm and dry. Have used them skiing and snowshoeing in windy, wet, and dry snow conditions. Truly a lifesaver for those who have to spend hours in elements, no matter the conditions. Very true to size, great construction. Absolutely satisfied (especially since you can't beat the price for Gore-Tex)!

Brrrrrrrrr!

Columbia Red Hot Jumpsuit - Women's

Columbia Red Hot Jumpsuit - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2008

I just used it in 10 degree (F) with two merino wool layers on top and bottom (one thick and one thin) and was still a quite chilled, which is not normal for me. Probably better suited for 30+ with similar layering, and 40+ with lighter layering. Not as warm as I thought it would be! The styling is quite cute. I ordered according to the size chart, but it is a little big. I could have sized down and may have been more comfortable, but the belt hit low on the hip, and the loose fit accommodates more layers. Also, recommend for dryer snow conditions... definitely not waterproof. Over all, I am happy with it.

My Primary Layer

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Legging - Women's

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Legging - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2008

I really like these, but have a couple things I wouldn't mind changing. It has a really high waist that cuts in a little, they are also very long. The material is great, not itchy at all, and kept me plenty warm as a single layer in 15 degrees, but had to add a 150 layer under for 10 degrees and below. I have a lot of Merino products and these long underwear are among my faves for winter weather.

Not My Fave

Icebreaker BodyFit150 Legging - Women's

Icebreaker BodyFit150 Legging - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 December 29, 2008

I also have the 260's (my primary layer) I bought these for spring conditions, and they worked well, definitely not warm enough for cool winter weather. Also, I'm not a fan of the fit. They are cut higher than the picture alludes, and the waist cuts in. The tag at the waist is also a problem, you cannot cut it out without having to re-sew the seam. (I tuck my shirt in to avoid the scratching.) Overall, a decent backup or base for multiple layers.

Came Back For More!!!

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Icebreaker BodyFit260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Absolute staple! This is the looser fit, and layers perfectly over the "slim fit" model (which I also own). I pair the two with a windstopper vest for hitting the slopes in 40+ dry winter conditions. Aside from its awesome performance, the styling is great too, very comfortable, very flattering, and the 1/4 zip allows you to adjust coverage to suit the temps (or attract the cuties ;).

Not to bulky...

CamelBak Sno Angel Hydration Pack - Women's

CamelBak Sno Angel Hydration Pack - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2008

I like the compact size, and the capacity is just right. Very convenient for carrying the little things you want with you on the slope (chap stick, camera, snack, etc.) without being bulky. The only problem was the shoulder strap adjustment placement. A little awkward to adjust, and kept loosening itself throughout the day (a knot fixed that problem).

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

This was a great next to skin layer for hitting the slopes. It kept me warm and dry, and the Merino wool was softer than some of the other Merino wool shirts I own. It's fit was true to size, and it's styling was great. The 1/4 zip helps you regulate temps too. It's a keeper!

On My Best Behavior!

Ruffwear Web Master Harness

Ruffwear Web Master Harness

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Our pup gets so excited when she sees this harness come out because it means one of two things: we are going for a car ride, or we are going on a hike. Either way, once the harness is on, she is on her best behavior (we're not sure if it is because she doesn't want us to change our mind, or if she thinks it's time to work). Our dog Jaeger is a 60 lbs lab/basset mix (looks like a lab with half the legs) who has a lot of energy and hops, but the short legs make it difficult to jump in and out of the truck, or climb over boulders. The harness allows us to easily assist/lift her over rough terrain, and it is great for securing a doggie seat belt to. It is as the manufacturer suggests too, it has had some really ruff (rough) wear and has held up fantastically. If you are interested in the packs too, you should check them out, because many come with this harness and are detachable so the harness can be worn alone!
