Great lightweight fleece

The North Face TKA 100 Masonic Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

The North Face TKA 100 Masonic Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2009

I bought this fleece for cool mornings and evenings when I don't need a full-strength fleece but still need some coverage. Also to keep on hand when hiking, in case the weather turns cold. So far I'm 100% satisfied. The fleece is warm and cozy but very lightweight. It's pretty packable, I tested cramming it in to my smallest backpack and there was plenty of room for necessities. The design seems thoughtful and well-executed. I am in the upper-range of medium for TNF, so I ordered a large to be safe. It is a touch big but I like the fit. The thumb holes come to about midway on my thumbs when my arms are straight, and they don't tug too hard when my arms are bent. The length hits a little above mid-hip and the openings for the pockets are right where they should be. An hourglass shape and princess seams give this jacket a lot of femininity while still feeling athletic. The hood is warm and full-coverage. I can see this carrying me through the fall and spring when paired with a waterproof shell.

Favorite pants

The North Face Slider Pant - Women's

The North Face Slider Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2009

These pants are simply perfect. I wear them around town and on the trail, and they work equally well. Be prepared to wear a belt, though, they do stretch out significantly between washes. I love that I can roll them up and button them into shorts, great for when a cool day turns warm or you start to break a sweat on a hike. The styling is great, a not-too-narrow leg with a subtle flare at the bottom. I think they're super-flattering on my body and the length is 100% perfect. I am 5'4" and wear the size 8 regular.

Great leash

Ruffwear Knot-A-Leash

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2009

This is our second Ruffwear Knot-a-Leash. The first is still going strong nearly a year after we got it, I ordered a new one as a backup and also because I like the newer carabiner style. Our original is pretty dirty, but is 100% intact. Threads may pull out a little from this leash, but they don't break. We play tug of war and it remains unharmed. I love the reflective material woven throughout, adds just a touch of extra visibility during night walks. The length is slightly shorter than traditional (5ish vs 6 feet) which I think is a plus. The handle is padded and comfortable. The rope material is stiff enough that it doesn't tangle as much as traditional nylon leashes and doesn't drop to the ground when slack. We use this leash in the city, in the woods, in the rain and the snow, and are 100% satisfied.

Comfortable but a bit tight

KEEN Targhee ll Hiking Shoe - Women's

KEEN Targhee ll Hiking Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 23, 2009

Keen sizing baffles me sometimes. All my Keen sandles are size 7.5 and fit perfectly, my Presidios are 7.5 but too small, my Winthrop boots are size 8 and a touch too big. I ordered these in an 8, expecting a similar fit to the Winthrops, but found they are a touch smaller, and maybe would be a better fit 1/2 size larger. That said, they are pretty darn comfortable at this size. Nothing rubs or pinches, the support and flexibility are perfect. They are *warm*, much warmer than I expected from a shoe with mesh uppers. I wear lightweight hiking socks and my feet bake. Looking forward to winter!

Well-made but run large

The North Face Precita Pant - Women's

The North Face Precita Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 23, 2009

I've gotten used to North Face products running large on me. By the size chart I should be a 12, but these I ordered in a 10. The 10s swam on me, so I exchanged for an 8, which are *still* too big. That said, I think maybe a 6 would be too small so I've kept my 8s. I wear a belt and they look baggy but not silly. They are seriously strong pants. Comfortable but durable. Dirt doesn't seem to stick to them and they dry faster than denim (but don't tear like other cotton pants might). The pockets are roomy and functional without disrupting the clean look. These are slightly longer than other TNF pants I have, but I haven't needed to hem them. I'm 5'4" and wear the size 8 regular with thick-soled shoes.
I recommend them, but be prepared to order at least a size down from you would normally wear from TNF.

Great raincoat

Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Rain Jacket

Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Rain Jacket

Rating for this product: 4 August 7, 2009

My pooch and I have tried out a few different jacket styles for both wind and rain, and this is probably the best for our climate. We live in Seattle where it's not usually very warm or terribly cold, but it is very wet. My pooch has thick, water-resistant fur but hates getting soaked. This jacket is lightweight and waterproof. It covers her entire back all the way to the base of her tail, and comes down over about 75% of her sides. Her chest is partially protected, as well. The reflective piping is a nice bonus. The detachable hood is kind of a joke, she hates it and if she turns her head it covers her eyes. We don't use it, which is why I deducted 1 star.
An added bonus is we get tons of compliments on the street, and my pooch feels dry enough that we can take long walks even when it's wet.

Comfy as all get-out

KEEN Mystic Sandal - Women's

KEEN Mystic Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2008

This is my first pair of Keen shoes. I bought them for a trip to Ecuador I'll be taking in a few weeks. I thought I'd need to break them in, and have been wearing them for the last week or so. They're extremely comfortable and haven't produced any sores or blisters, so no real break-in period has been necessary. I've walked about ten miles (generally in 1-2 mile chunks) in them so far, and worn them for about 25 miles on my bike. I agree with the previous reviewer that the buckle clasp is teeny-tiny and a little hard to work, but I'm getting the hang of it.
Great shoes, I'm looking forward to doing a little light hiking in them in Ecuador.

Great pants!

The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 8, 2008

I bought these for an upcoming trip where I will be doing a considerable amount of hiking. These pants are very comfortable. I chose my size based exclusively on my measurements and The North Face size chart and the pants fit perfectly. Because I'm 5'4" I was a little worried that the "regular" length would be too long, but it is just right.
The material is really lightweight and, at least with the slate gray color, a little transparent. I won't be wearing any brightly colored or patterned underpants with these, not unless I feel like showing off my knickers. ;)
There are two buttons on each pant leg to hold up the cuffs when rolled up, and they work. Unlike some pants that only put a button on one side of each leg, these genuinely convert the pants into capris. The drawcord at the waist seems more for style than functionality, as it doesn't truly replace a belt, it loosens up with time.
