Black Diamond Lost Arrow Pitons

February 15, 2012

i would trust a sling around a sizeable branch over a piton hammered into wood. if you're just teaching them correct technique for placing pitons, fine. but i wouldn't climb on it. creative problem solving is an important skill to a climber. maybe the best thing would be the toss the rope over the that first branch, adding a sling as the climber progresses. this brings back thoughts of a favorite climb at City of Rocks, Columbian Crack. its a classic hand crack that starts with what seems like an unprotectable chimney behind a boulder, solution: toss the rope over the boulder climbing 15ft to the first protection on TR.

Icelantic Gypsy Ski

January 29, 2012

i'm 5'8 160lb and have been rocking some scott p4's in 171. i have other boards between 180-190cm and yes they float better when it gets deep, but i always have fun slashing turns on the 171's. with 125 under foot and full rocker you'll be floating.

Armada VJJ Ski - Women's

January 5, 2012

when i stepped up from traditional camber skis in 169cm to CRJ hybrids in 180cm i was suprised how short they felt riding, sort of wish i went with a 188cm. i think if you're riding these in primarily soft snow off piste wide open you'll be stoked, on groomers maybe trees they are going to feel a little long. i'm 5'9 155 and don't drop cliffs taller than me...

the new standby

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2012

Replaced a very old whisperlite with this Dragonfly [still holding onto my 30yr old FireFly].... its a great stove, much more stable platform when your breaking out the big pots to cook for a group. simmer is better than the whisperlite or firefly. i like that the simmer control is extended so it protrudes from your windscreen and stays cool. makes great pancakes!

Petzl Corax Harness - Men's

Petzl Corax Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2012

supported my weight while hanging comfortable enough. i have a size 2; i'm a 32" waist which the harness fit fine, however i never felt like the legs were tight enough. should have grabbed a size one... gear loops are big and play nice while wearing a pack.

great boots, but wearing fast

Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Lowa Mountain Expert GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 5, 2012

pretty happy hiking in these boots, mostly use them to approach climbing routes. they are described as insulated but here in washington i've never found them to be to warm. after two years of use, they are falling appart. mostly the lace loops are failing, but where the leather is meating the synthetic on the lower ankle the seam has failed. most of this is due to abrasion, maybe i'm just hard on my feet. my last pair of boots lasted me six year: la sportiva glacier. the lacing on these takes some trial and error, you'll find something that works. wish the tongue was removable.

4FRNT Skis CRJ Ski

January 5, 2012

these have pretty straight sidecut and ski short. i'm 5'10 and 155 riding the 180cm's. i don't think i would want to go longer if slashing turns in trees was my goal. that straight edge wants to gun and never look back.... fyi the 180's are as long as my 188 s7's but don't waste as much legnth in the tips.

Mad Rock Super Tech Bent Keylock Carabiner

Mad Rock Super Tech Bent Keylock Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2012

i think for the price, this is a great biner. 35g is pretty light for a full size biner with 9kN open gate strength and costs less than $7. i have not expirenced the keylock nose catching on my mammut dyneema slings, cams or bolts. i have heliums aswell, but at almost $13 ouch....

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2012

for a belay 'biner i would want something a little bigger and with a round profile... that said these are super light and seem to clip/unclip smoothly in slings, bolts, or anchor chains.... now if we can just bring the price down a few bucks.

La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2012

picked up a pair last May.... i climb 3-5 days a week through summer, 4 months later the adhesive bonding the rubber to the leather is failing, and the rubber over the toe blew out. the soles look great still! i'm thinking i got a bad pair, as i know many avid climbers that rock these season after season. the fit was great for my flat foot, took a few day to break in as any leather shoe does. buy 'em somewhere you can return 'em if you have the adhesive issue i did.

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2012

haven't used a reverso yet so i can't compair, but this atc guide does everything i want. simple light, really great when you're climbing in a 3 person team and want to bring up followers at the same time. seems to be wearing faster than my old atc, but i think that more due to the conditions/ropes we've been climbing with. make sure you or your leader have one, auto locking is a must!

my favorite...

Blue Water Lightning Pro 9.7mm Climbing Rope

Blue Water Lightning Pro 9.7mm Climbing Rope

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2012

love this rope. i have last years [neon yellow] bi-patten, its great to be able to clearly see your rope to the top of a pitch even in low light. very distinct bi- pattern makes finding center easy. of the ropes i've climbed on, this one has the best feel. takes knots well, and has a very positive feel clipping. after one year of use, this thing still looks new; and it has been dragged all over squamish, index, indian creek, moab, zion and the list goes on... still neon yellow, sheath is perfect!

Black Diamond Camalot C4 Package #0.5 - 3

Black Diamond Camalot C4 Package #0.5 - 3

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2012

i found a deal on these i couldn't pass up, and picked up a few sets. I like other cams in the smaller and larger sizes but for your core set .5-4 these are great. I have about 30 pitches on them and everything feels and looks new, time will tell how durable they are but so far great! grab yourself a set of DMM spectres to rack and your set.

Metolius Master Cam

January 5, 2012

i perfer these master cams to BD c3's. the trigger feel on the master cams felt solid, and a little stiffer then the c3's. i like this, i think it leads to a more stable placement. i also like the lower profile stems, less bulk to get in the way of a tight placement or if one gets stuck and you need to get a tool in there. MAster cam's four lobes offer more suface area than C3's, a big plus depending on your rock of choice.

Black Diamond Momentum Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Black Diamond Momentum Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2012

likes:
-gear loops are semi ridged, don't flop while clipping
-buckles adjust easy
- packs smaller than my last
critiques:
-padding on legs is a little narrow
-gear loops arn't huge, gets crowded with tripples
-leg adjusters are a little wonky, but seem to work.

Mammut Skywalker 2 Climbing Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 January 5, 2012

i liked the helmet for style and fit, however the adjuster wheel for the back strap has very fine teeth and stipped within the first few days of use. found the chin strap easy to use and comfy, rides a little high on the head. The red mammoth logo was serious hit with the little ones...
