  • Stomping Grounds:

Northern Minnesota, along Lake Superior and BWCA
  • Bio:

Day to day a WEB GEEK and by weekend/weeks, I am an outdoor GEAR GEEK! Permitting the funding are there! I love camping and fishing, short trips or extreme trips, summer, winter, spring, and fall, doesn’t matter. I prefer camping in the winter just because it’s always a challenge and it’s always amazing. I love living in my area because it allows me to do so many different type of expeditions.

I will one day start venturing out of my state on these types of ventures, but until then, I am 100% satisfied with the area that provides me all sorts of fun. This year, 2008, has slowed me down a bit, have to focus on my home, but we are moving into the fall and winter, and that means to bust out the skis, light gear, and rods! And start dragging!

Teva P-1 Water Shoe - Men's

Teva P-1 Water Shoe - Men's

I like these wet socks. At first I thought the sizing was incorrect but these socks stretched and somewhat formed to my feet. I have lots of time on them and they hold up great, are comfortable, and have awesome traction. I literally do not even know there on! I was able to walk down a stretch of rapids without falling or slipping. Keep in mind that there isn’t much for support, it’s just like you’re walking bare foot. I was aware of this, but support wasn’t much concern. I wanted something light, not bulky but be able to walk around without slipping, and something to pack tightly.

What can you say, it just works and its light. I have 2 20oz and 2 10oz. I find that I use the smaller ones more with my WhisperLite just because I'm not cooking for an army. But always good to have multiple choices!

Hang on Utility Tree!

Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter

Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

I see some have had not so good luck with this product, but I can say I have been 100% satisfied. I have had this on 7 or 8 trips into the BWCA and I know for a fact that I have ran 72.8 gallons through this filter. I have also filtered some extremely dirty water and it has work perfectly. I would just make sure that after my trip, I would remove the filter and carefully do a thorough cleaning of the bag, hose and the filter by just rinsing off the junk that the filter left behind. I today still use this filter and I know I can run more through it without worrying. Keep your tools clean and they will last!

Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 14 Kayak

Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 14 Kayak

Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 14 Kayak

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2008

Great Kayak! I live along Lake Superior and many inland lakes. This kayak performs awesome on both. It turns on a dime, tracks very well, has a good cruising speed. I weigh 220 and can pack around 120 more pounds of gear with great buoyancy and performance still. I find without gear, the front is a little light. I love that it has a huge opening which allows easy access in and out along with storage. The seat is comfortable, not as fancy as other manufacturer's but works very well and keeps you dry and cool in hot weather. I always feel stable in it with or without gear. Fairly light for portaging, overall I love it because I can use it for recreation, fishing, and long touring in the BWCA. I recommend this kayak for multiple use which I was looking for.

NRS Catalina Spray Skirt

NRS Catalina Spray Skirt

Rating for this product: 3 July 11, 2008

This is a good skirt keeping you dry. I only marked this adequate because I own a Heritage Featherlite 14 Kayak and the skirt works for the large opening but not perfect and because of the Featherlite 14 kayak seat back, it doesn't work well. The seat back is a little wide. How ever, I do use this all the time on the Featherlite because it does work.

Rating for this product: 5 June 13, 2008

What's there to say, the only thing is awesome. I have about a dozen of these and use them for everything, bait, storage, water, and great for a cocktail in the woods or in your front yard. I haven't found many other products out there that can withstand the abuse these can take. Recommended!

Great stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 June 13, 2008

I have owned my stove for 4 years. I have had it deep in the woods and even used it in my back yard. I have had no problem getting it going in the weather from -15 to 90 degrees. Even on rainy days. I like that I can break it down completely to clean or service it. It also packs very light and small.

Outdoor Research Micro Night Bivy

Outdoor Research Micro Night Bivy

Outdoor Research Micro Night Bivy

Rating for this product: 4 June 12, 2008

I am an avid all year round BWCA camper and I purchase this bivy for my 2008 January 3-day, 7-mile ski and 1/4 mile hike up 300 feet to our favorite spot.
I am very satisfied with this bivy with only one minor issue; it's hard to get into quickly when you have -5 degree weather. I experienced very little condensation and it was very easy to resolve what condensation I had by unzipping a little to vent. I customized a thermo-lite pad to slip inside the bivy and used a -0 degree sleeping bag and slept in my long under ware. I was 100% dry and warm in the weather I experience, (Snow, rain, and very cold (low as -15 degrees) damp weather). I found that there is more than enough room to sleep in all positions and I am a 5' 7, 200 pounds. This also packs very small and is light. Overall I am very pleased and can't wait to use it through out the other seasons!
Here is a link to my bivy in use on the trip http://www.frontiernet.net/~jt9786/BC_gear/ORBIVY.html

Great price, Light, comfortable and kept me warm during my trip in January. If you want to see how I used this product you can read my review with the Outdoor Research Micro Night Bivy. The only thing is it is a little bulky for packing but I am very satisfied. I actually modified it to slide into my bivy.
