Winter Gym Climbing Sanity Check

Mammut Samurai Climbing Shoe

December 30, 2011

Climbing in my buddies garage during a low snow ski season trying to keep from going crazy until it snows more! The Mammut Samurai is ok, it has a very weird fit and makes your foot distort slightly. The shoes stretch a little so size accordingly. Also the tongue seems to always fold over making them very uncomfortable if you don't fix it before you start climbing. I give these shoes a MEH review.

Voile Drifter Hybrid Rocker Ski

Voile Drifter Hybrid Rocker Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2011

When touring deep powder is your main course then there's no other ski that fits the bill. With a 120mm underfoot you'll float like a pontoon boat on a glass pond. My drifters are my first choice when it's deep. The rocker tip really makes a difference when breaking skin track as opposed to a traditional cambered ski.

Not recommended for Aid climbing

Omega Pacific Link Cam

Rating for this product: 3 October 3, 2011

I would not recommend the 0.5 size for Aid climbing. I've had (2) in a row of these deform on the trigger shaft and allow the trigger to move past the stopping point making the cam lobes invert. The second linkcam deformed after only two placements. It's kinda scary to deal with when it happens Aid climbing. They should be fine for normal trad climbing as long as you don't step on your gear...see attached photo

Wild Country Neon Keylock Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 February 15, 2011

These are fantastic!. They don't have a lip to hook your rope on so they clip and unclip very easily. They are super light weight and the screw gate action is very smooth. These are my new favorite lockers and they come climbing with me every time. If you like light weight, easy to use, sturdy lockers, then these are the carabiners for you.

Great Slipper

La Sportiva Cobra Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Cobra Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 February 15, 2011

This is a great slip on shoe that performs well on slab and small edges. I prefer to wear this on long trad climbs and not so technical sport climbs. I would not recommend this on the steep stuff because the heal doesn't hold to well. Your foot can slip out when really cranking on a heel hook, unless you really size down then they become very uncomfortable, but your heel will stay in, so it's a trade off. Oh yea they definitely color your feet orange after wearing them, and it doesn't seem to go away even after months of wearing them.

Dalbello Sports Virus Lite Touring Boot - Men's

Dalbello Sports Virus Lite Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2011

I'm really stoked to finally own this boot! The hefty price tag steered me clear for along time, but man am I happy with what I've purchased. These boots are the bomb for a no compromise touring boot. They are more capable of driving a ski than other softer feeling touring boots. Built around Dalbello's Krypton Pro basic design, these are unlike any touring boot out there. They provide almost infinite flex, yet still are able to provide the leverage needed to ski at higher speeds. With a huge range of motion for walk mode, they make skinning (almost) enjoyable. The Intuition liner makes the fit of these as close as you can get to completely custom foam liner without buying them. As with most ski boots, a custom foot bed is recommended for best fit and support, which should eliminate some of the high volume this boot provides initially.

Put your rope on a diet

Mammut Infinity Climbing Rope - 9.5mm

Rating for this product: 5 August 12, 2010

This ropes is great for most applications especially if you're looking to save a little weight. You get a little more rope stretch than thicker ropes, but that's to be expected. Watch out using it in auto locking belay devices as the smaller diameter is not recommended by some manufacturers (still works great in my gri-gri). Great for alpine outings!

Asolo Fugitive Gore-Tex Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 9, 2010

I cannot put into words how I feel about these boots. This is the single best piece of outdoor gear I use. I've put these boots through hell and back and they are still going strong. If they ever eventually do wear out I'll be buying the same exact boot again. They are rugged, durable, stable, waterproof, and built to last. They support my feet incredibly, I've even used them to lead up to 5.9 climbing and they perform. I have all the outdoor gear you can imagine and these are my favorite piece of gear. They do have a short break in period and I recommend a footbed to make them the perfect fit and support.

Multi-tool of cams

Omega Pacific Link Cam

Rating for this product: 4 May 13, 2010

These guys are a great addition to any trad rack. They are definitely the 'go to' piece when the crux is staring you right in the face. Easy trigger pull, fluid movement, and reliability make up these cams, the one complaint is they do weigh a bit more than any other cam, but you could always just go on a diet to justify the extra gear weight.

Weapon of Choice

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2010

You have to admit trad climbing is as little crazy, but you don't have to make your protection choice that way. Climbers who know choose C4's.
**Easy, smooth, reliable, consistent trigger pull every time
**Lighter than all previous versions = lighter rack!
**Easy to see colors, any who has gotten tunnel vision when cruxing on lead can appreciate this feature
**Easy to place
**Huge size range, from fingers tips to Off Widths
My favorite outdoor activity is trad climbing, and I've used just about every Cam out there over the years. I use Camalots by choice, and the C4's are the best hands down.

New & Improved! Just like everything else New and Improved

Mad Rock Mugen Tech Climbing Shoe - Men's

Mad Rock Mugen Tech Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2010

I'd have to say they have definitely got it right in this latest version of the Mugen. I've been a fan of the Mugen for a while now and this is better than all the previous versions. First of all they changed the liner, no more bad smell! Before this change my Mugen's would literally contaminate the entire room with foul foot odor, this is no more! Also they stiffened the tow box, which gives the Mugen significantly better edging capabilities. Need to stand on a dime edge, no problem! Bravo Mad Rock for improving my favorite cheap shoe! You can't find a better deal. The do run a tiny bit bigger than the older Mugen.

Skullcandy Asym iPhone Earbud Headphone

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2009

I originally bought these to stay connected when bike commuting, now I use them for just about everything. No matter if I'm bouldering, mtn. biking, or cranking on my commuter bike to make it to the office on-time these are my weapon of choice. It's very easy to answer calls on my phone with just a touch of a small button. It did take a little while to 'adjust' to their fit, as they don't fit quite as well as the Smokin' buds.

Mad Rock Hooker EZ Climbing Shoe - Men's

Mad Rock Hooker EZ Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

These shoes are meant for steep climbing. With the dual density rubber on the sole and the aggressive heel these shoes love the steeps. Not quite as aggressive as the Loco (which hurts like hell), these shooes have a more natural feel. I've used the Flash but much prefer these. The rubber extra rubber around the toe box makes for great scumbing on horizontal routes.

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2008

This shoe is built for Trad. It's much thicker than most shoes which adds extra cushioning when jamming your feet in cracks. The rubber around the laces does a great job protecting the laces when crack climbing as well. One thing I did notice is they were a bit warmer than most shoes, probably because they are thicker. These skis rock! Unlike most twin tips these are very stable at very high speeds and love to go fast, very fast. If straight lining and cliff drops are your normal runs, these are the skis for you. When you strap these to your feet you can tell these are not for the faint of heart, it takes a little more effort to throw them around. They definitely love the pow and are built for big mountain. Dalbello Sports Krypton Pro Custom Ski Boot

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2007

Having been a professional ski bootfitter, I know the importance of a high performance, functional ski boot, and this boot is it. The Krypton series unique tongue design allows for almost infinite flex which translates to better control, more stability, and more natural ski control. When a proper fit is achieved shin bang is virtually eliminated. Weather you are hucking cliffs or screaming down your favorite run, you will not find a better boot. I could have any boot on the market, but this one is as good as it gets.
