Roxy Phoenix Ski w/ Light Intergra Binding - Women's

Roxy Phoenix Ski w/ Light Intergra Binding - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2009

I would not have thought to buy these for myself. A gift from my husband, I was a little leery as I knew nothing about them. In a word, they ROCK. They love to be driven hard, but are predictable and stable at all speeds. I live in the east and ski on hard pack man-made snow, lots of icy patches, windblown crust, and an occasional day of real powder. The Phoenix has given me the confidence to charge through it all. I never thought I'd be a fast skier...Roxy changed that.

I moved from intermediate to advanced largely due to the confidence inspired by these skis. I like CONTROL. I've moved to ungroomed double blacks and have some occasions to test the binding release mechanism. It's been flawless...releasing when they should and not cranking hard on my knees before doing so. Great ski, great binding, great buy. I'm smiling just writing about them.

Lightweight in the Wrong Way

Mountain Hardwear Butter Glove Liner

Mountain Hardwear Butter Glove Liner

Rating for this product: 3 February 4, 2008

They feel like butter, true, but sadly they hold up like butter, too. Yeah, I know they are liner gloves, but when the temps climbed, I pulled off my outer gloves and within two ski runs I had worn holes in this glove. They're warmer than pantyhose, but they hold up just about as well. Very disappointed...they shouldn't be called Mountain HARDwear if they can't be exposed to the elements.

I love the soft fabric on the wrist cuff, the fit was nice, and they were very warm. Now if they can just make 'em last.

Not Much Bang for the Buck

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Women's

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 February 4, 2008

I have buyer's remorse, not because the jacket isn't good (it is) but because I have found so many others for less money with better features and superior design. The light color seems to attract dirt and after only one washing, it lost its water repellancy. I treated it with Revivex and restored it. I wear it as a shell for alpine and Nordic skiing and it tends to bunch when layered. Disappointing...

Amazing Warmth & Comfort

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 28, 2008

and great style and fit, to boot. If only it was waterproof, it'd be perfect! While snow sticks to it like a magnet, it makes a great layer under a shell. But reserve that for the coldest days because this fleece is so warm, you'll be scrambling for pit zips in no time. I've cross country skied at 5 below with this and two layers under it and been incredibly comfortable. For alpine, it's warm enough on its own down to the mid-teens. Pair it with the Monkey fleece gloves and you'll be styling, warm, and very, very happy. Lightweight and non-binding, it'll soon be your favorite. Say "YES" to freedom of movement! Just remember it's not happy when wet. Keep your phur dry and you'll never be warmer.

Indispensable Gear

Marmot Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Marmot Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2007

This is the single best item I own and the base layer I opt for in all cold weather activities--particularly skiing. The superior stretch assures that nothing binds anywhere especially the knees.

I'm shorter, stocky, and curvy, so it's really hard finding a woman's fit that accommodates my muscular legs and these are a joy in that regard. But it's the waist band design that makes Marmot's far superior to all other power stretch makers. First, there's the supersoft fabric over the waistband which, while snug, is never tight. The pants stay in place nicely without strangling me. The waist band sits comfortably just below my natural waist and works wonderfully well when adding additional layers for skiing. I literally have never been more comfortable and warm on the slopes. I immediately ordered a pair for my husband. We call them our "happy pants." If you're looking for performance, warmth, comfort, and style, you simply must add these to your gear bag.

I'd recommend opting for the capris version for skiing. Neither pair I ordered arrived with contrast stitching (I got black stitching on black), which was disappointing from a style perspective. All was forgiven once I put them on.
