The North Face Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket - Men's

December 30, 2008

Go for a medium. The jacket is roomy so that layering can be done, but cinch cords at the sides allow for a more tailored look if desired.

Apex Thermal

The North Face Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2008

This is a wonderful jacket! I bought one for my nephew and one for myself, and we both love the jacket's warmth, water and wind repellance, and style. A vest pocket would be a nice addition, and I'd prefer that the cuffs be a bit more snug, but these are tiny complaints next to the kudos I give this jacket. I agree with a previous reviewer: for the money, the Apex Thermal far surpasses the Denali

Greenland Zip boot

The North Face Greenland Zip Winter Boot - Women's

The North Face Greenland Zip Winter Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2008

This is a warm and functional boot for most winter conditions. Traction on packed snow is excellent. I have trouble keeping fingers and toes warm during our subzero winters, so I'm always on the lookout for warm mitts and boots. I bought these a half size larger than usual so that I could wear a couple layers of thermal socks. The boots do a pretty good job in -20 degree conditions as long as I am working my toes. With the side zips, they are easy to get on and take off. While providing solid ankle support for trudging through snow (especially while strapped to snowshoes), they are not clunky or awkward. They are completely waterproof--even in slush or heavy, wet snow. The fur collars are a stylish accent when you tuck in your pantlegs. If you want the boots to have less presence, wear boot cut pants and, with a little effort, you can work your pantlegs over the boots.

North Face Pumori Fleece

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Women's

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2008

The Pumori is great as a lightweight jacket, and it's perfect as a zip-in liner with compatible North Face shells. I love the jewel blue color and the soft fleece! As always, the North Face delivers quality of construction and design. One aside: I like my outerwear on the roomy side, and my opinion is that most North Face women's clothing runs a bit small. (I see other opinions to the contrary, so my caveat here is that fit is a very personal preference!) As a size 8 (sometimes 10) person, the medium works fine for me, but if I were a 10 (sometimes 12), I'd probably go for a large. This store has such great prices and customer service that I always want to buy from them, but you might want to visit a retail outlet just to check fit. Try sizes there but buy your jacket here!

North Face Mountain Light Parka

The North Face Mountain Light Parka - Women's

The North Face Mountain Light Parka - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2008

This is a great-looking jacket with all the right features in all the right places. It is well constructed with quality materials. It performs right up to standard in that it's warm and dry in tough weather. One caveat: I've found with most North Face clothing, sizes run a bit lean. I'm typically on the small side of medium, but this medium just fits me. I prefer outdoor clothing a bit roomier, and I might be tempted to order a size up next time.

MSR 25" Lightning Snowshoes

MSR Lightning Snowshoe - Women's

MSR Lightning Snowshoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2008

This is an excellent snowshoe--it's quick to strap into and light and nimble to use. Most impressive is its incredible traction. Up, down, or sideways, there's no slipping or skidding with this shoe. I'm still undecided about the optimum length. In a future purchase, I might choose longer than a 25" model. In new-fallen snow conditions, I sink deeper than I'd like--even though I'm under 120 lbs. Still, it's tough to beat the agility of this shorter model.

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot

Alpina Blazer Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2008

This Alpina boot is well-made, warm, and comfortable. I am very pleased with my pair--especially since it's harder and harder to find boots that fit my ski bindings. For those who don't want to give up their 75mm three-pin bindings, these boots are a great choice.
