La Sportiva Nuptse Mountaineering Boot - Men's

September 27, 2009

What's the actual weight of these boots: it says 2552 g and 6lb 12 oz., but 2552 g is actually 5 lb 10 oz.

Scarpa Summit GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Scarpa Summit GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 September 19, 2009

Despite breaking these boots in on several hikes in the adirondacks, when I went on the "real trip" (Berg Lake Trail B.C.) and had a heavy load these boots gave me severe blisters on my heels (this despite prophylactic moleskin and two layers of socks.) They also developed a nagging pressure point under my left big toe that got worse over time. The boots are actually way too soft in the ankle. Contrary to the company blurb, while the ankles are flexible support is compromised. They are really useless for front-pointing.

Mountain Hardwear BMG Backpack - 5800-6500cu in

Mountain Hardwear BMG Backpack - 5800-6500cu in

Rating for this product: 1 September 19, 2009

The hip-belt lumbar support is poorly designed: under a heavy load it literally gave me a blister/pressure sore on my sacrum. To relieve the pressure I rolled up some socks and taped them with duct tape to either side of the lumbar support.
I also had to put more weight on the shoulder straps then I usually do and got blisters on my collar bones!

The pack does OK when carrying a modest weight: but the whole idea of this pack is that it's supposed to let you carry a lot of stuff.

A minor point: the ice axe loop elastics pulled out of their retainers with the first use.

Overall this is unfortunate because I otherwise like the pack design for mountaineering.
