  • Stomping Grounds:

Currently, the Middle East (for 8 more days!)
  • Bio:

Put me on a bike... road or mountain... I don't really care. Strap my twin-tips on my feet and give me a patch of fresh pow to make some turns in... I promise you'll get to see my pearly-whites! Throw a fancy gadget like a GPS on my wrist or handlebars, and you'll get to see those pearly-whites twice... once when I leave, and again when I find my way back. Dunk me in the pool for a few laps, or run me down a trail with a sign that points to "Grandma's House" and I'll do my best to keep up.

Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

Love this coat! It's as warm as your favorite sleeping bag but without all the rolls of fluffy down. Conduit shell is great for light snow/rain (that's all I've encountered so far), but I'd bet it can handle much more. I'm 6'0, 160lbs and got the Large. Normally, I find the sleeves on most Larges to be a bit short, but if anything, these might even be a bit long. I've been walking around in NYC with this in 10-20 deg weather and haven't noticed the cold at all. One suggestion for improvement would be to make the inside of the collar a bit softer... after a day of urban mountaineering I had a pretty rough chin from it rubbing on the inside of the collar all day... but that's such a picky nit that I couldn't give less than 5 stars. Great jacket, great fit, nice style, warm as Hell, sheds snow/rain, and my Boo loves it... so again, mad props to MHW for another great piece of gear! Get yourself one and go attack some singletrack sidewalk!

The XL is HUGE!

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Fantastic bags... straps in the right places as you can use a single shoulder strap to carry the bag over one shoulder or don the whole thing like a backpack. Construction seems to be very sturdy and the bright yellow color makes the bag easy to find on the luggage carousel. I'm in the Middle East right now and it was super easy to spot my bright yellow bag in a sea of green duffels! I filled up the Large with clothes and it weighed in under 50 lbs... something you would have trouble doing in a roller-bag or regular suitcase. I also got the XL, but it was so HUGE that I decided to bring a second, smaller bag instead of filling up the XL. If you get the XL, expect to pay the airline's extra fees... and if your plan is to get the XL and not stuff it full, you might as well just get the Large... trust me, it's plenty big for a 2-3 week trip (or 6 months in my case)! I'm keeping the XL for road trips though... great for tons of gear!

Exactly what I wanted!

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Bomber jacket with great looks! I disagree with "D's" review in a few areas... I thought the fit is perfect... I'm 6'0" and about 165lbs with kinda goofy-long arms. The sleeves drape perfectly below my wrists and the openings are snug enough that it's not a challenge to get your hands through, but would be tough to go fishing in the sleeve for that undershirt sleeve that got tugged up a bit. The length of the jacket is perfect... comes right down to the base of my manhood, so you don't have to worry about peeing on your jacket on the way home from the bars. The Shift Element is a bit stiffer and thicker than the standard Shift. Perhaps I can clear up the matter of the wrist pocket and the internal/MP3 pockets... they don't exist. The neck is nice and snug (I wear a 16.5 in mens shirts) and there's room to breathe, but it's snug enough to keep the wind out. I got the Earth color for casual wear and love the look. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this jacket. Oh, and I found mine on SAC for under $80... but my review would be the same if I had paid full price... it's a great piece of gear.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Another quality piece from BC.com! I own the Shift Element and just got the standard Shift (Size L, in Carbon) to add to my gear list. The fit is nearly the same as the Shift Element, but the fabric is slightly thinner and a bit softer. The wrist pocket doesn't exist, nor does the interior chest pocket... there's the welded chest pocket on the chest and an MP3 pocket on the inside... plus the 2 hand pockets, and that's it. The fit is nice and athletic, and there's even a full length zipper fly to cut the wind (not found on the Shift Element though). If it helps, I'm 6'0" and 165lbs and found the Large to be just right... roomy enough for a base layer, but you'd have a tough time squeezing a 100 weight fleece jacket under it.

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 27, 2008

I have this jacket too, and there is no MP3 pocket or internal pocket. Contrary to what "D" says, this jacket looks very stylish, especially in Abyss.I agree that there should be some better colors. A black would be nice ---------------------------------------------------I wouldn't ever consider wearing it on the mountains, b/c of the looseness of the cuffs and the waist. This is more of a casual wearer for a day of shopping and hanging out with people, but not the best for extended periods outside. It makes for a great spring/fall rainy-weather jacket (minus the hood), or a january noontime/afternoon jacket---------------------------------------------------I have the other carbon shift and it fits me great overall (just a little short for being 6' 4"). D needs a sedative. It does have a wind flap and is a comparable design to the gamma sv. The is the "Shift Element." Not the "Shift Softshell." It is not the updated version of the Shift Jacket with the wrist pocket. The new version of the Shift Jacket is the carbon and carrot colored one. It now has an outside chest pocket versus the wrist pocket, but it does have the interior mp3 pocket.***************************************************I'm not sure we're all talking about the same jacket... I have both the Shift Element (from this page) and the standard Shift. The Shift Element that I got in the Earth color (only offered in the Shift Element) does NOT have a wind flap behind the zipper or any internal pockets... but it's still an awesome jacket! The description on this jacket is correct... one chest pocket, two hand pockets. If you're really worried about carrying so much junk around, see if your Boo will let you put your stuff in her purse.

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 27, 2008

the softshell materials are all three components -a shell, a wind barrier, and a fleece insulation. All this is engineered into a single material. the outer shell provides abrasion resistance, DWR to repel rain and snow, the wind barrier buried inside where it does the most good but protected from damage, and a soft fleece lining for enough insulation for active backcountry tours.---------------------------------------------------Of the different BC.com softshell jackets, this one is the thickest and should keep you plenty warm jotting around town or on casual days. If you plan to do anything really active, you may even find this to be a bit warm. As warmth goes, I'd say this (the Shift Element) is the thickest, the standard Shift is in the middle, and the Rime pullover is the thinnest. All have the same properties that Bill described above, just different fabric weights to them. Really though, the warmth will come from what you choose to put on under it... and since it's nearly windproof, you can use nice, light layers and still be comfortable.

I just got mine about a week ago (and the Carbon color is decent, by the way)... 2 hand pockets, the exterior chest pocket, and an internal MP3 pocket are all you get. The description is incorrect about the interior security pocket, interior chest, and wrist stash pockets.

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

When I said my buddy had the Edge 301, I meant to say the Forerunner 301. The Edge product line is for biking... guess I had that in mind from when I was talking about carrying my other GPS in my hand. Hope this didn't cause anyone any confusion. Also, if anyone knows of a way to edit a review, please feel free to share! Happy running... or biking... just don't forget your new GPS!

The North Face Momentum Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Momentum Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

Great jacket if you understand what you're buying. Seems like a common review is that it's not windproof... but if you want that, you can find tons of different jackets with fabrics like Gore Windstopper or Polartec Powershield (my favs are the Mountian Hardware Windstopper Tech and the Backcountry.com Shift Element). This fleece is great for mild days and makes an excellent layer under a shell. If you are looking for something to keep the chill off of you on a mild day, especially when you plan to go out and break a sweat, this is one piece of gear that you'll want in your stash! The Monkeythumbs are awesome and give you tall, lanky guys lots of sleeve to work with. On the other hand, if you just want a super-comfy piece to wear around the house/lodge, it's great for that too. Hope that helps!

The North Face WindStopper Hybrid Full Zip Jacket - Men's

The North Face WindStopper Hybrid Full Zip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

This jacket is the perfect companion for a brisk fall/winter run! Windstopper fabric on the front fends off the cool breezes and the fleece back allows for just the right amount of cooling and ventilation. The fit is nice and athletic... I'm 6'0" and 165lbs and got the Large... it fits like a glove. Not restrictive, but not something that is going to become a nuisance to run in. I couldn't be more pleased with this one... pair it with a long-sleeve TNF Reckoning tee and hit the road... the Monkeythumbs on the two even line up perfectly! Hope this helps...

Good shirt for the cooler days...

The North Face Momentum Hybrid 1/4 Zip - Men's

The North Face Momentum Hybrid 1/4 Zip - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 4, 2008

I got this shirt a few weeks ago and it has become a new favorite of mine for lounging around in... but because I didn't buy it for that purpose, I took it out on a couple evenings for some runs. Granted, I'm not a great runner, but I sure did look good while I was slugging out my miles. The fit is great, athletic but not body hugging. The fleece lining was appropriately described by "Rocky Mountain Goat" in that it is a bit more than a micro-fleece and definitely keeps you warm. My only peeve with this shirt so far is that across the chest (on the inside of the shirt), it has more of a mesh-type backing than just the plain fleece and can begin to rub you raw a bit as you begin to sweat (if you're wearing it without something underneath). Here's the rub (pardon the pun), the shirt is so warm that you'd probably have to be out jogging in freezing temps to be able to tolerate the warmth of this and another shirt underneath. However, stick a couple Band-Aids on your man-mammories before you hit the trails and you'll never be happier! On a more positive note, the 1/4 zip is almost a 1/2 zip... opens up wide to dump the heat, and if that doesn't keep you cool, the shirt seems to squeegee the sweat right off of you! I'm 6'0" and 170lbs, and the Large was a great fit... and with the Monkey Thumbs, all of you guys with those goofy-long arms (like mine) will have nothing to worry about in the sleeve lenght department. Time to quit reading reviews... buy this shirt and hit the trails... you'll love it.

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2008

I got hooked on the GPS when I got my Garmin bike computer, but wanted something to run with that I didn't have to carry in my hand... this is the perfect combination! Gives you all of the stats that you want on 3 screens as you run, and you can customize each screen to show you up to 4 different things per page. There's even an auto-scroll function to roll through the pages as plug along. One of my favorite features is the backlight that you can set to stay on for different amounts of time after you press a button, or just leave it on for your entire run. Garmin also has this packaged in a bundle with a bike cadence sensor and handlebar mount... and I'll admit that I bought mine elsewhere at a bit of a discount from BC.com's price (even with the bundle), but I love this product and wanted to share with all of the purists on this site. As for the size and fit, I've got no complaints. My buddy has the Forerunner 301 and this is much more comfortable and less cumbersome to wear. Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all when I'm running. The display is easy to read and the ability to analyze your workout when you're done is a good mental-motivator, especially if you tend to run the same course a lot. Doesn't provide much in the way of mapping information, but if you can run far enough to get yourself lost, then you're in good enough shape to take a few detours on your way back... but it will provide directional data (a bread-crumb trail, if you will) if you're willing to turn around and run the same route in reverse. All in all, a great product. If you plan to use the multi-sport (running/biking) functionality, look around for the multi-sport bundle... otherwise, I think the cadence sensor and handlebar mount will cost you about another $90 or so.

Under Armour Heatgear Loose T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Under Armour Heatgear Loose T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2008

Just got one of these shirts, and my chest couldn't be more thankful! The fit is comparable to a "normal" t-shirt... but the cut is possibly a bit longer. Took it out for a quick 5K today and then a spin class at the gym, and at the end, the shirt was soaked but 100% more comfortable than a cotton tee. This shirt is so light, and moves so freely, that chafed nipples are a thing of the past! Feels like cotton, but performs just like any other UA shirt... buy this and you won't be disappointed!

Garmin Edge 205 GPS Unit

November 24, 2008

I'm not certain about being able to manually enter a course in advance, but I know you can save a ride and access it again. There are also 3rd party sites like geoladders.com where people can upload their rides... from there, the route files can be transferred to the GPS before he hits the trail. Personally, I have the Edge705 and absolutely love it! I haven't had any trouble with GPS signals, and never had trouble saving my ride data with either the Motionbased.com or Garmin Connect software. Hope that helps...-Sully

Here's an easy one for anybody who owns this... all the reviews say that the 305 is great for training, but does it have built-in training profiles? More specifically, does it direct you to speed up and slow down to target specific heartrates, or does it just show the real-time data? Thanks,Sully

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2008

I love this pullover shell! Great athletic fit and the sleeves are actually long enough on the Large for a guy with a 6' wingspan to fit in to without looking like he's wearing his girlfriend's coat. I'm 6'0" and 170lbs and the Large is a great fit. Nice and warm, yet lightweight and easily packable if the day heats up. If you can find it on sale, you're doing even better (I got mine on Steep and Cheap for under $60)... but it's great either way!

Pearl Izumi MicroSensor Thermal Leg Warmer

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2008

These leg warmers are awesome! Noticeably warmer than the bike shorts you will wear with them, but when the weather heats up, they pack up easily. If you commute to school/work, cold mornings and warm afternoons are not a problem... and much more convenient than having to commit to just shorts or tights for your ride. No complaints here... great product!
