The model is 5' tall and 95lbs. The jacket arm length is a tad long for her, but it really isn't an issue.

Marmot Snazette - front cut
Marmot Snazette Softshell Jacket - Women's
October 30, 2010
As you can see the front is about 2" shorter than the back of the jacket. This is an XS so this may vary a bit by size. This is useful for not getting hung up in climbing gear and keeping your lower back covered. Some people don't like this jacket because of this, but for most active people it is a great cut.

Arc'teryx Gamma AR Softshell Jacket - Men's
December 11, 2010
Well I can't guarantee anything but I am 6' tall 185lbs and I've been told that I have wide shoulders also, and I have plenty of room with the large jacket. I think you should try it out in large and remember you can always send this back. Backcountry's returns are super easy to deal with.

I've got the large and I'm about the same size as you and I have a bit of room in it. I believe the XL will be too big, but that's just my .02

Wife is 5' 92 lbs and she has the XS parka version of this coat. Fit is great which is awesome since most of the time we have to find mature looking children's clothes because nobody makes stuff in her size! Imagine the problem we have finding womens size 5 1/2 shoes!?!

wow your a skinny fella! I'd still go large because of your arm length although you may want to look into Arc'teryx stuff since they cater to that in their jackets.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's
February 18, 2010
Your down garment can be professionally washed, but should never by dry cleaned, because the chemicals used are harmful to the fabrics and filling and will severely reduce loft and thermal efficiency. Check the yellow pages under Camping, Backpacking, or Mountaineering Equipment for folks who specialize in cleaning outdoor products. Your local retailer may also be able to refer you. Be sure to ask if they specifically wash down clothing.
DIY Machine Wash: Zip up all the zippers, attach all Velcro® and turn your garment inside out. Wash in a front-loading machine only, using cold water on a gentle setting. Use a minimum amount of a mild powder soap or special down soap (available at outdoor stores). Use at least two rinse cycles to get all the soap out of the garment.
When moving your garment from the washer to the dryer, do so carefully by carrying it from the bottom. Tumble dry in a large commercial dryer on low heat. The dryer must be large enough for the garment to flop freely around. Drying could take several hours and your garment should be checked often to make sure it is not overheated. As it dries, look for clumps of wet down and gently shake to redistribute the down.
Do not use a top-loading washing machine (the agitator will destroy the channels).
Do not use liquid soap or detergent. Do not use strong soap or detergent.
Do not use your home dryer (they have been known to melt holes in the fabric).
Do not lift your garment from one end when wet (lift the entire thing all at once from underneath).
Do not dry in the sun (the UV will damage the nylon).
Hope that helps. :)

Arc'teryx Venta LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

Brandon what about the Gamma AR? I know it's not windstopper but it's dang close to it with the Polartec Power Shield fabric (98% according to polartec), just curious which is better and durable for general hiking, backpacking, Jeep adventures, etc? These jackets are way to similar to choose between! dang you Arc'teryx

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's
February 16, 2010
for Chi-town this jacket isn't the best. You need something with wind protection in order to keep the warm air inside the jacket created by your body heat. I'd look into something with Windstopper (100% windproof) or Polartec Power Shield (98% windproof, but it breathes better than Windstopper) fabric in order to keep the wind from ripping right through your jacket. Best bets are the The North Face Sentinel, Mountain Hardwear Tech fleece, Marmot Afterburner, Arc'teryx Gamma AR or the Gamma SV if you want a hood.
hope that helps!

Marmot Afterburner Fleece Jacket - Men's
February 16, 2010
The MH Tech doesn't have a "stiff mesh inside" it is soft on the inside and is a great jacket for use in almost any condition and it doesn't feel harsh at all. If by "stiff" you mean it doesn't stretch then you are correct, but all Windstopper fabric does not stretch as well as other materials.

Arc'teryx Venta LT Softshell Jacket - Men's
February 15, 2010
Which Arc'teryx is comparable to the MHW Tech fleece???? I just sold my MHW Tech because it was a pet hair magnet and the sleeves were a bit short for me. But I really loved almost everything about that jacket! (sure the collar is a bit to big to really zip up all the way unless you have a giraffe neck) Anyway which Arc'teryx softshell is similar in terms of warmth/windstopper etc.?? I had a medium in the MHW that the torso was perfect but the arms were a good inch or so to short, so I'm curious how the Arc' jackets compare in sizing also (I'm 6 foot 185 lb.) THANKS!!

TNF never stated these gloves were water resistant and it should be common sense, these are basic fleece gloves with some durable material added on the fingers and palm. They keep you warm as long as it's dry out.

January 4, 2010
If you buy the small, be careful when you wash it. I am 6' 185 and I have a medium which shrunk a bit in the arms after putting it through the dryer. I've tried on large and it fits but it's a bit bulky on me in the torso.

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Ultra Light Mini Sock

Actually they do make a heavier low cut socks because I own a pair. They are called the Smartwool Hike Medium Mini Crew socks. I'm not sure how well it would do for Alaska weather but mine do pretty well for winters in Western NC.
