Quality Helmet

Giro 2008 Fuse Bluetooth Audio Helmet

Giro 2008 Fuse Bluetooth Audio Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 January 18, 2008

I like this helmet. It is light, fits well and is stylish. The vents are easy to adjust with gloves on. I have found the sound to be quite good and was surprised at how clear the phone was through the bluetooth. The only drawback is that the TuneUps ear covers are bulkier than the normal ones and so pushes on my ears. A little uncomfortable but not a deal breaker. On the plus side it keeps the speakers close to the ear for better sound.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2008

I have only skied twice in this jacket and it has already shown itself to be the best jacket. First time it was raining and everyone else in the group was wet and cold. Not me. The water was still beading off. The second time the temperature was quite warm, but the huge pit vents kept me cool and dry while others had to go back to their cars to remove a layer. The power skirt also works, not there just for show. I'm 5'9", 170lb and the medium fit best. As for looks well, I got many compliments from several people about the jacket. It is quite an athletic fitted jacket. Note that the fireweed color is more like a fire truck red. Believe the hype, Arcteryx jackets are as good as people say.

Fantastic

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2008

These gloves are great. Wore them skiing in the rain. Others in the group were wringing the water out of their inners, and my hands were completely dry and warm. The gauntlet on these gloves is big enough to easily slip over the cuff on your jacket. I have had other gloves where you had to try and stuff the jacket cuff under the gauntlet while trying to pull them one which is a pain in the ass. The handcuffs are excellent too. Because they are elastic and not a cord with a sliding lock, you can take them completely off with one hand. My hand is 7.5 inches and find the size 9 maybe a little big, but perfect if you use a thickish liner, like the also excellent Hestra Polartec Power Dry Waffled Glove.

Nice gloves

Hestra XCR Short Glove

Hestra XCR Short Glove

Rating for this product: 3 January 14, 2008

These gloves look great and feel pretty good too. I did return mine because the red ones don't have a strap to put on your wrists to prevent dropping them of the lift. Also they seem to fit a bit narrow. The finger length was OK, maybe a bit long, but the glove was tight to get on and off. I really wanted to like them. I can't comment on how warm they were though.

These gloves feel really good. They are not too thick either. The waffle pattern seems to help these gloves shrink and stretch to your hand movements.

Hestra Silk Glove

These gloves are very thin. You can see through them. They would be perfect if you outer glove did not have extra room for an inner.

Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian Knife

Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian Knife

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2008

You don't have to be a freak to appreciate a finely crafted knife, so go ahead and satisfy you knife fetish by buying this knife (you can never have to many). This knife is light but built very solidly. Opening and locking mechanisms are simple and excellent. This one is a perfect size for backpacking.

What else would you Buy?

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Mouthpiece

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Mouthpiece

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2008

If you own a camelback bladder (if you don't you should) this is what you suck water through. It seems like mice like them too which is why I needed to buy a replacement.

So Simple

CamelBak Reservoir Dryer

CamelBak Reservoir Dryer

Rating for this product: 5 December 28, 2007

This sure beats a bent up wire hanger, and is far less likely to damage the bladder. I find for short durations, leaving chlorinated water in the bladder keeps it algae free, but for long term storage this is so easy and convenient.

Nice Sock

Lorpen 2 Layer Polartec Ski Socks

Lorpen 2 Layer Polartec Ski Socks

Rating for this product: 4 December 28, 2007

This is a nice sock. It's pretty thick. It feels like a 100 weight fleece and the colored section is double layered. I still managed to get my foot into my ski boot. My toes always get cold, which is probably due to my boots being done up tight. So it doesn't matter how thick a sock is, if you have restricted blood flow. I find using a thinner sock and toe warmers a better solution for myself.

Solid Performer

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2007

I have had this stove for about 6 years and have no need to replace it yet. The only lacking feature is not being able to simmer easily. But then I only eat rehydrated food and coffee when hiking so don't need to simmer anyway. It boils water really fast. I have found that 100ml/person/day is about right for white gas. Don't be put off by the ignition process. Just let out enough fluid to soak the wick, no more. Then angle the stove so the flame directly heats the fuel tube and your good to go. I found it didn't work with diesel. Fits inside the MSR 1.5L pot.

Its all I carry

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic w/ Stuff Sack DO NOT USE

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic w/ Stuff Sack DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2007

I have had this for 2.5 years and is the only thing I carry for purifying water. It is so easy to use. Make sure you get the attachment for the nalgene bottle. Obviously if you hike near very dirty water you will need to get some sort of filter as well as using this. I also found that the batteries would not work so well in very cold weather, but thats with everything. I have done 7 day hikes with 1 other person and only used 1 set of batteries, but carry spares just in case. The build is good.

Almost Perfect

Garmin Edge 305 Bundle

Garmin Edge 305 Bundle

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2007

This is a great tool. It was built mainly for cycling, but works equally well for running and hiking. It has an excellent bike mount. The unit is small too. About the size of a Sandisk Sansa e200 MP3 player. It fits in the same armband. Also it uploads to the PC with no problems.

This thing is very accurate both in location and elevation. It calibrates a barometric altimeter with the GPS when it has a good fix. There is not enough room here to mention all the excellent features and uses. It does everything any other bike computer can do plus you can plot your path on google earth after your ride. Its useful when hiking to know what time you will get to the camp. It functions just like any other GPS. Upload waypoints and navigate to them. Also if you just wandered off into the bush it will navigate back for you. Also if you have a goal time for the marathon, just upload the course and speed and the unit tells you if you are ahead or behind your goal time. The list goes on. By the way I don't work for Garmin in case you were wondering.

Great

Osprey Packs Crescent 85 Backpack - 5300 cu in

Osprey Packs Crescent 85 Backpack - 5300 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 30, 2007

This is a great pack. I have had it for over 2 years. It is very customizable. The removable water bladder is a great feature. I wear it skiing under my jacket. The lid also comes off and converts into a bum bag. It must be durable since mine has shown no signs of wear. I doesn't have many pockets on the outside which is good and bad. The pack is very comfortable. I found the internal separator above the bottom sleeping bag compartment a bit flimsy, but given that everything else is excellent there must be a reason for it. This bag has made me a big fan of osprey packs.

Can't go wrong

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

MSR Alpine Classic Cookware Set

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2007

Had this set for 6 years. Bought it with the MSR Whisperlite International which fits inside this set. Very durable. Don't heat these without water in them as they will warp. Not that it will affect the performance though. I like having new gear but still after 6 years I can't justify replacing them. Beside I would just buy the same set anyway.
