excellent for the price

The North Face Gonzo Jacket - Men's

The North Face Gonzo Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2010

at this price point, hard to beat. i have had the gonzo out more than 5 times now in a very stormy, snowy & cold wasatch november. it has exceeded my expectations, performing very well in all conditions. i haven't yet needed to ventilate the shell (like i said, it's been cold) but it's been beaten up pretty good by howling winds, sub-zero temps & heavy snow/wet.

the zippers are great - easy to work & the offset up high makes a ton of sense. the goggle pocket comes in handy as a sandwich pocket or anything else a bit oversized. its been warmer than i expected, really keeps the wind out & drawstrings at the hem work great. the pow skirt with belt loop snaps is a revelation for me & works awesome. can't believe i ever lived without.
it's a no frills, performance shell & it's a pretty design as well. i would highly recommend. the fit is normal as far as i can tell. i usually wear a large & this one fits great.

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

January 12, 2010

the 125mm skin will work perfectly ... you will likely not need to trim the shovel of the skin at all with a 126mm tip. 125 it is.

Note These Come in 2 Sizes

Black Diamond Method Alpine Sole Block

Black Diamond Method Alpine Sole Block

Rating for this product: 4 November 9, 2009

I own a pair of Methods & bought the alpine sole here at BC ... but had to return it as I realized upon opening it was size small & I need the large (which apparently isn't currently available).

Per BD's website, the sizing is:
23.0-25.5 (Small)
26.0-31.5 (Large)

I wish BC had the sizing info on this page ... cost me $6 in shipping the sole blocks back.

Black Diamond Method Alpine Sole Block

November 4, 2009

The alpine sole will make the Methods work better with Fritschi or Dukes or Barons. The AT sole which ships with the Methods will work best with Dynafit, but it can also work on Dukes ... but the alpine sole is recommended.

Rating for this product: 5 September 26, 2009

Not only is the cap 3 long sleeve a perfect base layer for mid-winter sports ... it's also great as a casual, comfortable & cozy top when hanging around the house or going out for dinner.

I also find myself wearing this a lot when I travel - it's perfect for flights & car rides.

Bottom line: you can't go wrong ... get it.

Lightweight but Bulky

Giro G9 Helmet

Giro G9 Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 September 23, 2009

I've been using the G9 for a couple of years - the design hasn't changed. It's a completely adequate helmet solution.

Some pros: fairly lightweight - you won't really notice it up there. Also keeps you nice & toasty on colder days. Vents work too, so you don't overheat.

Cons: it's a bit bulky, so it gives you that bobblehead look. It's also omnipresent on the slopes, so if you are looking to stand out from the herd, this is not the way.

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

September 10, 2009

I wear size 27.0 ski boots & had to get the large Baron, you'll also likely need the large Duke. To make sure, check your boot sole length - it should be printed in mm somewhere near the bottom of the boot shell.

Versatile Mid-fat

Head Skis USA Monster iM 88 SW Alpine Ski

Head Skis USA Monster iM 88 SW Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2009

At 175lbs, I ride the 175cm & it works like a champ in nearly all conditions with the exception of knee-deep (or deeper) pow. It is incredible in crud - that might be where it shines the most although it also likes to carve the groomed.

The monster likes to go fast & performs best when driven aggressively. This is not a backseater's ski.

I've gotten some good use out of this set. The carabiner is a nice touch & good for keeping the set together & hooking the set when necessary. They are super light & clean up easily. For the price, an excellent buy.

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 13, 2009

This glove is dialed. Remember that scene from the Michael Keaton flick "Gung Ho" when he asks the Japanese execs whether a frog's ass is watertight?

Well ... this glove is the frog's ass. Nuff said?

Great job, BC!

Best box in the business

Yakima Sky Box

Yakima Sky Box

Rating for this product: 5 January 19, 2009

I bought the Skybox 12 in fall 2008 & mounted it on my Subaru Forester. I love this thing so much. There is plenty of space in the 12 for 2 snowboards, 1 pair of skis, 3 sets of ski poles & other random stuff like shovels.

One of the things that hooked me on the Yakima was the fact that you could mount it on either side. I have mine mounted as close to the driver side as possible. Works great.

The locks & latch system are simple to use. The box lid stays in the up position when loading/unloading. Doesn't seem to hurt gas mileage too too much. Quiet on the road too.

All in all a fantastic product. Money well spent. Go for it

Look PX 12 Lifter WB Ski Binding

Look PX 12 Lifter WB Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2008

If you're looking for a solid binding that won't put your bank account in a headlock, look no further.

I have these mounted on my Head Monster 88s, which is a big mountain ski designed to rip pow, crud & trees. The Look provides a good middleware between you & your fat boards.

The wide brake fit my 88 millimeter waist with no modification required.

Recommended.

YAKTRAX Yaktrax Heat Adjustable Insole

YAKTRAX Yaktrax Heat Adjustable Insole

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2008

I put these in my snowboard boots & instantly liked what I felt. The liners molded quite well to my foot & the bed feels secure & supporting (I have a pretty high arch).

All in all, met my expectations. Worth the money; easy upgrade to any footware.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Limited Edition - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Limited Edition - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I also scored the Shift LE for a ridiculously low price at SAC - but I think it's worth the $160. Made in Canada, the Polartec Power Shield will run you over $200 from other brands & it will keep you nice & toasty/dry without sweating you out.

The fit of the L is perfect for my 6-3, 180lb frame. This jacket is definitely not overly technical, but it has the essentials: good fit in the neck, 3 pockets that work well, a decent cuff (though a velcro cuff would be nicer) & a drawstring at the bottom to keep the chill out.

Surprising bonus: the color does NOT induce projectile vomiting.

Great Pant for the Money

Orage Benjamin Insulated Pant - Men's

Orage Benjamin Insulated Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I've been using a slightly earlier version of the Benjamin for 3 seasons & I love this pant. First off, it is very warm & probably best for lift-served skiing & riding. I use them for snowboarding & they work perfect - shed water/snow like a champ.

Love the 2 front zipper pockets. You can stash a lot of stuff & get to that stuff very quickly & easily. The side cargo pocket is great for keeping a hat or a face mask in case the weather turns nasty.

Good value in this pant. I hope to squeeze one more season out of them this year.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2008

there is no doubt about the monkey man's ability to keep you warm. bundled under its plush, super-soft fleece is happiness found.

unfortunately, the monkey man seems to run small. i was caught directly between the L and the XL. i ended up going with the XL primarily because of sleeve length. it fits great in the arm & shoulder, but it is loose fitting around the torso & it's a bit long at the waist. which is a bummer.

other than the sizing quirks, this is a great fleece that packs well too.

Patagonia Capilene 4 Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2008

i picked one of these up at the SLC outlet sale & it is one of the best base layers i have ever worn:

- extremely warm
- athletic fit works very well on my lean frame
- i love the stretchy feel
- i can use it on fall days as an around-the-house shirt

great product. try to get it on sale

Vasque Aether Tech Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Vasque Aether Tech Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 6, 2008

i've used these shoes all summer & i've done a lot of hiking & a little trail running with them. been really impressed with the boa system - it provides a glove-like fit that can be micro-adjusted at any time with literally a quick turn of the hand.

this shoe is very light, very technical. on very rocky stuff, i can feel a lot through the sole. i guess that's the price you pay for the light weight.

my only knock on the shoe is with the achilles pull tab at back. mine are already pulling out & i fear they will completely tear away any day now.

still gotta go 5 stars. highly recommended

Backcountry.com Merino Bliss Lightweight Long Underwear Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 27, 2008

I bought one during the mid year sale. Not sure it's worth 4 stars at regular cost.

I like the mock Tneck that zips ... the chest pocket is a nice feature too. Fits pretty tight through the torso. Looks good, decent style & best suited to mid-layer.
