MSR TwinPeaks Hybrid Shelter

MSR TwinPeaks Hybrid Shelter

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2007

MSR tests its tents in a wind tunnel and says Twin Peaks can withstand wind of 50 mph. The MSR "Huba Huba," by comparison is rated by the company to 40 mph.

It performs quite well in snow. Like any tent, the key is banking snow around the edges to block wind and add warmth.

Twin peaks is much larger than most two-person backbacking tents, which is a highly welcome feature.

I've found full-coverage shelter-tents can provide satisfactory protection against mosquitos, although the lack of netting is a disadvantage in certain conditions.

Some people look askance at floorless tents in summer forest because of crawling insects. People will have different tolerance levels for this but it doesn't bother me. Probably in a tropical rain forest I'd feel different. Also, most of my camping is in the off-season.

Often, I don't even carry a ground sheet, and rely on a lighter weight bivvy sack to keep underside sleeping bag dry and protected.

I've owned the Twin Peaks for several years and note that its listed size is somewhat larger than the best-selling competing versions of this design.

I believe it is also slightly warmer than a number of pyramid designs (one of which I own and may even prefer) due mostly to its lower height and smaller volume.

However, it's a bother sometimes to take hiking poles on easy overnight hikes, and relying on sticks seems just slightly dubious (but certainly feasible in forest.)

Although it's possible to suspend the peaks from exterior tie-offs, I disliked the result in my only because of inferior tension and severe bother.

locking mechanism complaint

LEKI Tour Trekking Pole - 1 pair

LEKI Tour Trekking Pole - 1 pair

Rating for this product: 2 November 19, 2007

The locking mechanism is problematic. After much grief, I switched to a well-known superior design that is much simpler and trouble-free.

Works good

MSR SuperFly Stove

MSR SuperFly Stove

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2007

The Superfly can be used with a wider array of cannisters than the MSR Pocket Rocket, which I've never used. The company claims that O-rings can become brittle and dangerous at temps less than ten below zero. I'd be willing to give it a shot after warming them up a little. I've used the stove at zero and never had any problem with fuel pressure, despite reports to contrary.

Trouble

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 3 November 19, 2007

Far superior to my old Svea, but still more trouble than a canister stove. Gasoline is scary, nasty stuff and my Whisperlite hasn't seen much use in recent years.

Best Alternative

MSR Dromlite Bags

MSR Dromlite Bags

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2007

I like it. You need a wide mouth on water containers and it's pointless to have a container that doesn't fold up. Other designs don't cut it. I added a hydration hose from MSR. Also superior design.

Nice bag

Western Mountaineering HighLite Sleeping Bag: 35 Degree Down DO NOT USE

Western Mountaineering HighLite Sleeping Bag: 35 Degree Down DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 November 5, 2007

I always combine this bag with a very light bivy, partly due to its delicate shell material. This is a highly practical combination that still weighs less than many comparable bags yet with the added advantage of bivy protection. It must be said that increasingly, there are nearly comparable bags available on close-out for cheap.
