Bio:
I'm a skier who enjoys deep powder, and really any type of skiing, actually. I've been lucky enough to get to film with MSP for their movies Claim, Seven Sunny Days, The Hit List, and Yearbook, two Warren Miller films, and the documentary Steep. I'm a correspondent for Powder Magazine, and I have some amazing sponsors: The North Face, Volkl, Tecnica, Giro, Subaru, Squaw Valley, Crystal Mountain, Clif Bar, and backcountry.com. Thanks to all of them!

Ingrid Backstrom's A Rainy Winter Jog in the Sierra
Created December 29, 2009
Sometimes you just need to get out and run around, even when it's nasty outside. It's always hard to get the stuff on and get outside, but once you're out there and have taken the first few steps, the hard part is over and you can just cruise and enjoy braving the elements!

Ingrid Backstrom's Early Season Storm Day, West Coast
Created December 12, 2010
The days are shorter and the flakes are wetter, but there's hardly anyone out there and the best turns are going to be the last few runs, so you need to be warm and dry to make it to the bell. Please remember to wear your beacon at the resort when skiing during and after a storm, and always ski with and keep an eye/ear on your buddy! See you out there!

Ingrid Backstrom's Sierra Day Tour, Unsettled Weather
Created December 29, 2009
Heading out above Lake Tahoe for a few pow laps--the goal is to be lightweight but prepared for anything. I know I am going to sweat because I'm trying to keep the fast people at least in sight (yeah, right!), but then I want to be warm when hanging out having a snack & enjoying the view and for the ski back down.

I always wear these with a helmet, and they work amazingly well; also, I love the lens changeout system. This particular lens is sweet for low-light days.

MSR Reactor Stove
June 10, 2009
this stove is amazing for melting snow & boiling water quickly at altitude. idiot-proof to use, as well--just DON'T try to warm up the fuel canister to try to get it to work better when it's cold out (with any stove, for that matter..)! Danger!

The North Face Redpoint Opus Jacket - Women's
January 30, 2012
This jacket is a good insulating piece for skiing (with a shell over it) probably at about 25-35 degrees. If you are moving (fast walking or running, backcountry skiing) for me it would keep me warm from 0-20.

The North Face Destiny Down Jacket - Women's
October 11, 2011
This would be good for snowmobiling--but you may want something a bit tougher like the Chaletta Down jacket; it will hold up better to the wear and tear your clothes take on a sled.

The North Face Catalyst Down Jacket - Women's
October 11, 2011
No--this is much more a layer piece than an outer jacket, although on a day without precipitation you could very much wear it on its own, but for Rainier you would also want a HyVent or GoreTex shell.

Marker F12 Tour Binding
February 9, 2011
I am about your same weight and think this could be an awesome first set-up for backcountry that you could also comfortably ski at the resort. As for climbing, each set-up has its advantages, but if you are mainly planning to ski resort but want to tour even up to half of your days, this will be excellent and lighter-weight than the Dukes.

Marker F12 Tour Binding
February 9, 2011
In my opinion, this will be your best bet to stay in one boot and get the best of both worlds. The ski performance is definitely preferable to the fritchis and far outweighs the little bit of extra time switching them over. Have fun!

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Women's
December 22, 2010
For a beefier shell, I would recommend the Lockoff--it's the top of the line Gore-Tex shell, if you are looking for a heavy-duty outer shell. Waterproof, helmet-compatible hood, and good venting make it great for being active in any weather. If it is an insulated jacket you want, the Snow Cougar is really warm and insulated, plus it is waterproof as well!

The North Face Base Camp Ski Roller Bag
November 19, 2010
I usually put two pairs of skis in here, plus assorted gear like shovel, running shoes, etc., then pad it with my ski clothes. The straps should work no problem with your snowboard--the "innards" are minimalist and should work great with anything.

Volkl Gotama Ski
March 23, 2010
Hi, Mike--Hmmm. I'm assuming those 190 sumos are your powder skis only, and that the Scratches are more of an everyday board for you? If so, then the 186 will probably fit perfectly in that quiver as the new everyday boards. However, they ski shorter than a 186, so if you ski the Sumos many days, then you might want to check into the 194s--they will feel more like a regular 186 or so.

Tecnica Moon Boot - Women's
August 6, 2009
I would recommend the 42-44; they might feel snug at first but the inside liner is soft and comfy, and they do pack out a teeny bit with use. Enjoy! I LOVE my Moon Boots!

Tecnica Moon Boot - Women's
August 6, 2009
I know guys who wear these boots and love them! They just have to be secure with themselves and ready to rock them--use the Euro sizing, and just order the size that would fit the guy. Unisex for SURE!! (maybe not the pink ones, but there are plenty of manly colors--they guys I know rock the black usually, but one extremely flamboyand Australian that I know likes to wear the white ones!)

The North Face Metropolis Down Parka - Women's
April 20, 2009
I would say if you want to wear layers like a sweater or hoodie or fleece to go with the medium. If you're just wearing it over stuff that's tighter to the body, the small would be good, definitely more of a fitted look. I wear a medium and am 5'4", about 140lbs if that helps.
