Costa Del Mar Pumphouse Polarized Sunglasses

Costa Del Mar Pumphouse Polarized Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 1 September 11, 2009

I was really excited when I purchased these. Aviator style? Cool. Supposedly the best lenses in the biz? Cooler. Integral hinges that take a beating? Coolest.

Got them... Frame material is stiffish plastic and the hinges consist of roughly a 5 mm tongue pinned into a groove. CR39 lenses are plastic ("polycarbonate"), not glass, which I knew.

Biggest hang up is the style, if they blew these things up sizewise, I would keep them despite all the downsides. (An inch wider, a half inch taller) The reality is that these are for small to medium faces (lady faces perhaps?). As a bigger guy, I look like I'm wearing children's glasses, and the quality is right there with the look...

They did come with a nice case though.

Spy Soldier Goggles

Spy Soldier Goggles

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2009

Not really, but if I was, my Soldiers would look cooler. Sometimes I think these look sort of like those Geax watersport-sunglass-goggles on my bigger face, and would probably best suit someone with a small to medium face. Only very slight fogging issue, very comfortable, fairly durable, and the hinged strap fixture is awesome. Under $75 would be a fair price.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 July 21, 2009

Three stars because I think the retail price is too high for what you are getting. The jacket is extremely light and minimal, which is great, but that means there are a few downsides. I find it's too sparse on creative design elements that could really set the jacket above competing products without adding too much weight or cost. My main complaints are that the pit zips gape when fully open which is no good in the wind and the hood cinch/format is a bit cumbersome. In terms of function, it keeps me dry but does not breathe very well (as expected for this type of jacket). I carry this jacket every day, since summer is now officially monsoon season in New England. At $50 you would be getting your money’s worth…

Right Coast Perspective

Scott Mission Alpine Ski

Scott Mission Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2009

After skiing these a few days in a bunch of conditions, I really like these skis. Floated in the foot deep pretty well, ripped the soft/wet snow and cord, and felt controllable on ice. They are big planks (wide) by east coast standards, so you really need to lay on them to get an edge. These babies need room to run, so if you like to ski on "auto-pilot" I would say go for something else that is less apt to cruise at breakneck speeds. For those of us that like to charge and make big turns, they're great. Mission 183 w/ Look PX12, 6'2" and 215 lbs.
