Is there an instructional video I can buy about trekking poles?...

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC PA Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

December 31, 2008

Is there an instructional video I can buy about trekking poles? I know that sounds silly, but I got a pair as a gift for my dad to encourage him to be more fit and enjoy the outdoors even tough he has bad knees. But these are not "in" where he is from so the only person he's seen using them was an 80-year-old and I think he got the wrong impression that they're fancy canes for people who can't walk without assistance, not for all ages, and a great workout.

Pro yaktrax won't come off

Pro yaktrax won't come off

YAKTRAX Pro Shoe Crampon

December 31, 2008

I found a lone yaktrax hanging in a tree while hiking this trail the other day. It wasn't the "pro" version of yaktrax. It was the style w/o the velcro to keep the crampon on your boot. The non-Pro style like to fly off your feet when you're not paying attention. So, if given the choice, my money goes with the "pro" because it's got velcro.

Fischer Vision Skate Ski - Women's

December 31, 2008

Are these a good skate ski for a beginner? They are among the least expensive on the site, but I don't want an equipment disadvantage on top of a skills disadvantage when I try out a new sport. I also don't want to be that noob with the uber-gear who can't use or appreciate it.

YAKTRAX Pro Shoe Crampon

December 31, 2008

I was hiking along this trail and found a lone yaktrax hanging from a tree. It was not this "Pro" style, but the style without the velcro. This is why I personally would choose the "Pro" version over the "regular" yaktrax.

Outdoor Research Hypnotic Down Jacket - Men's

December 23, 2008

The Outdoor Research web site doesn't list pit zips as a feature so I'd bet this jacket doesn't have them, but I don't know for sure. Maybe someone who owns the jacket can answer. http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/m_s_hypnotic_jacket.html

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

December 18, 2008

Does smartwool make tank tops? Believe it or not, I'm looking for one for a hot yoga class, the reason being that the wool is very soft and won't hold BO like all my other synthetic sports bras and tops. Obviously, it would have to be a super lightweight knit.

An old favorite with a new name

SmartWool Heathered Rib Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2008

I love SmartWool socks, and was disappointed to learn about a year ago that my favorite model of Smartwool sock -- the Casual Sport Crew -- was no longer in production. Eventually I contacted SmartWool and they told me that this sock -- the Heathered Rib -- is the same sock. Hooray! However, before I learned this, I tried a couple of other SmartWool types including the Adrenaline Medium. The Adrenalines are just as good, but not as well suited for indoor use, IMO. They make me feet just a little too warm, whereas the Casual Sport Crew/Heathered Rib seem to keep them just the right temperature whether I'm indoors or outdoors.

Answer to: "Whats the type of wool and the blend?"

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

December 6, 2008

I bought mine last year and they've made a few changes on the new version. Mine has the logo in a different place and they don't offer it in the color I bought. I don't know if they've changed the materials on this run but I can tell you what my tag says:
28% Cotton
27% Polyester
25% Wool
8% Nylon
8% Acrylic
4% Other

It's a real bummer that the jacket is over 1/4 cotton. It would otherwise be the perfect fleece replacement. I love it around town, but ironically I'm not using in the backcountry.

Hey, I just got mine and the blend is more wool. 42%. 37 Polyester, 16 nylon, and 5 polyurethane.

Windwall 2

Windwall 2

The North Face WindWall 2 Jacket - Women's

December 4, 2008

I love this jacket. It has a flattering/feminine cut and the fleece is a tighter "knit" than some others which blocks more wind and doesn't hang on to *as much* dog fur as some others (such as the Patagonia Synchilla). I wear it everywhere - indoors and out, as a main jacket on cool days and as a layer under my down jacket on cold days.

Answer to: "Do these pants have a pad?"

Sombrio Roam Mountain Bike Pant - Men's

December 3, 2008

Not sure but there's a pretty good photo posted at
http://www.whistlermountainbike.com/wmb/index.php?content=020808-sombrio-roam-pants and it doesn't look like there's a pad. Also, one reviewer on this site wrote "Probably enough room to wear tights or a chamois underneath -- depending on how skinny your legs are."

Merrell Siren Sport Trail Running Shoe - Women's

November 25, 2008

Can I count on these to have a wide toe box like most of my other Merrell shoes? I'm also wondering if these are good for cold/winter running or if there is another pair that's better suited to cold weather.

Columbia Mountain Tech Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

November 11, 2008

These seem to hold in some stank even after I wash them. Any idea how to get it out? I've tried a laundry soap with Febreeze but the results were marginal. Has anyone tried Penguin Sport Wash? I would buy it if backcountry sold it.

Pearl Izumi Ultrasensor Race Visor

June 19, 2008

I have a visor (not this one, not even Perlizumi) and the way the bill is shaped, it dips down and hits the edge of my sunglasses near my temples. Has anyone worn this visor and know if it sits low around your temples and will interfere with sunglasses?
