Elektra "Mg G Fit" buckle

Elektra "Mg G Fit" buckle

Garmont Elektra Telemark Ski Boot - Women's

April 18, 2009

This is a close up of the buckle for the Mg G Fit boot (GAR0153), not the boot shown on this page which is the (GAR0223).

Elektra "Mg G Fit" vs "G Fit"

Elektra "Mg G Fit" vs "G Fit"

Garmont Elektra Telemark Ski Boot - Women's

April 18, 2009

Mg G Fit is on the left (sku GAR0153).
G Fit (sku GAR0223) is on the right, and is the boot advertised on this page.
Notice the difference between the thermofit liners, buckles, ski/walk lever and the "Mg" on the toe of the boot on the left. There was a big price difference in these 2 boots.

YakTrax in the tree

YakTrax in the tree

YAKTRAX Pro Shoe Crampon

February 5, 2009

I noticed this lone yaktrax hanging in a tree while hiking this trail. As you can see, it's not the "pro" version of yaktrax. It's the style w/o the velcro toe streap. The non-Pro style like to fly off your feet when you're not paying attention. So, if given the choice, my money goes with the "pro" because it's got velcro.

Windwall 2

Windwall 2

The North Face WindWall 2 Jacket - Women's

December 4, 2008

I love this jacket. It has a flattering/feminine cut and the fleece is a tighter "knit" than some others which blocks more wind and doesn't hang on to *as much* dog fur as some others (such as the Patagonia Synchilla). I wear it everywhere - indoors and out, as a main jacket on cool days and as a layer under my down jacket on cold days.

The North Face NSE Tent Mule Bootie - Women's

April 9, 2009

I took a chance and washed mine in a regular washing machine. I think I even threw them in the dryer for a little bit. (Can't remember, it was a few months ago.) But I do recall that they shrunk a little, but they still fit. They're still as warm as when I first bought them.

Garmont Elektra Telemark Ski Boot - Women's

April 9, 2009

The less expensive ones at http://www.backcountry.com/store/GAR0153/Garmont-Elektra-Telemark-Ski-Boot-Womens.html have a tag which says "Elektra Mg G-Fit" are different from these (sku GAR0223) in several ways.

On the cheaper MGs (sku GAR0153)
- The buckle levers are different. (I'll post photos)
- It says "Elektra Mg" on the exterior toe of the boot. The boot on this page says only "Elektra" on the toe.
- The ski/walk lever on the back is different then the boot on this page.
- The liners are thermofit but look different than the boot on this page.

Sorry I personally can't tell you which is better! :) I can only tell you what is different. But I'll bet a Backcountry Gearhead would know the answer. Photos to come.

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC PA Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

December 31, 2008

Is there an instructional video I can buy about trekking poles? I know that sounds silly, but I got a pair as a gift for my dad to encourage him to be more fit and enjoy the outdoors even tough he has bad knees. But these are not "in" where he is from so the only person he's seen using them was an 80-year-old and I think he got the wrong impression that they're fancy canes for people who can't walk without assistance, not for all ages, and a great workout.

SmartWool Microweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

December 18, 2008

Does smartwool make tank tops? Believe it or not, I'm looking for one for a hot yoga class, the reason being that the wool is very soft and won't hold BO like all my other synthetic sports bras and tops. Obviously, it would have to be a super lightweight knit.

SmartWool Heathered Rib Sock - Men's

SmartWool Heathered Rib Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 15, 2008

I love SmartWool socks, and was disappointed to learn about a year ago that my favorite model of Smartwool sock -- the Casual Sport Crew -- was no longer in production. Eventually I contacted SmartWool and they told me that this sock -- the Heathered Rib -- is the same sock. Hooray! However, before I learned this, I tried a couple of other SmartWool types including the Adrenaline Medium. The Adrenalines are just as good, but not as well suited for indoor use, IMO. They make me feet just a little too warm, whereas the Casual Sport Crew/Heathered Rib seem to keep them just the right temperature whether I'm indoors or outdoors.

Merrell Siren Sport Hiking Shoe - Women's

November 25, 2008

Can I count on these to have a wide toe box like most of my other Merrell shoes? I'm also wondering if these are good for cold/winter running or if there is another pair that's better suited to cold weather.

Columbia Mountain Tech Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

November 11, 2008

These seem to hold in some stank even after I wash them. Any idea how to get it out? I've tried a laundry soap with Febreeze but the results were marginal. Has anyone tried Penguin Sport Wash? I would buy it if backcountry sold it.

When Snowshoes are Overkill

YAKTRAX Walker Shoe Crampon

YAKTRAX Walker Shoe Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2008

I've been hiking every weekend in the Wasatch Mts of Utah for 3 winters and only twice have I needed anything more than YakTrax, and that was because the snow was deep and required snowshoes instead of just traction. These are perfect for the outdoor enthusiast who gets out a little later in the day after the trail is partially packed down. My YakTrax never leave my car. They are lightweight, compact, easy to put on and take off, and far easier to walk in than snowshoes, which I see a lot of people clomping around in along the exact same trail conditions that I swiftly hike in my YakTrax. Two caveats: (1) Glance down at your feet every now and then because sometimes they come off your feet, but not very often. (2) not good in rocky terrain because they will tear.
