Outdoor Research Alti Mitten - Men's

Outdoor Research Alti Mitten - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2009

They keep your hands warm, no matter what. I think that's all that needs to be said for these. They have a removable liner glove inside, which can be used as a stand-alone mit down to freezing temperatures (so be careful not to order up in size in order to fit liners in as it already has one). Something that hasn't been mentioned is that the fabric on it is extremely durable. I used these to rappel down successive portions of the mountain (about 300-400 meters total), and the palm leather on these did not wear one bit. I was very pleased all around.

Good warm shirt

Mountain Hardwear Microchill Fleece Zip Tee - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 10, 2009

I wore this as an outer layer over two smaller base layers. I only wore it as a temporary piece when it got a little chillier early/late in the day. All in all I have nothing to really complain about with the shirt, however I'd be careful about wearing it as a stand-alone unless in moderate temperatures. Wasn't as warm as I was hoping, but it got the job done. I'm 5'6" 140 and ordered the Medium and it fit perfect over a layer or two, not too loose to look baggy, but not too tight to restrict movement.

Just what you need

Black Diamond Mini Pearabiner Screwgate

Black Diamond Mini Pearabiner Screwgate

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2009

Great durable biner that's easy to use and has plenty of room (they use the term "mini" very loosely). Great biner for rappelling and top roping. You always know when it's locked and it's lightweight.

Very Comfortable

Arc'teryx Jetti Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 November 10, 2009

This is a great casual/hiking hat. It never made my head itch, and it fit like a glove. I noticed someone else made this comment, but this isn't a good hat when wet. While mine didn't get soaked, it got pretty moist with sweat and some snow. Like another review mentioned, when this happened it did expand and sag. If you're looking for a casual hat or a hat for activities with a very low probability of getting wet, this is your hat.

Good sock for both walks of life

SmartWool Hiking Liner Crew Sock

SmartWool Hiking Liner Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2009

I use these socks for both trekking/climbing and as dress socks. For trekking/climbing they were very comfortable under heavier socks and did an excellent job of wicking away moisture. I didn't get any blisters, even with heavy mountaineering boots and my feet were stink-free (which can be a problem with my feet). They double well as dress socks as they are very comfortable as a stand-alone.

Reliable Vest

Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Vest - Men's

Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2009

I've found this to be both extremely warm and reliable. It's very compressible with the stuff sack, so it's very convenient to carry/pack. Great for spring/fall cold weather use, the fact that it's stylish as well certainly doesn't hurt the cause.

Solid Piece

Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2009

A lightweight and very comfortable helmet, you almost forget it's on. Luckily I didn't have to test the durability and how well it holds up during an unforseen impact/incident, but it was definitely a great helmet on both rock and ice.

Great Baselayer

Mountain Hardwear Advance Lightweight Crew - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Advance Lightweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2009

Wore this shirt for 7 straight days during a trek (just like the description talks about), and it was amazing. Kept me warm and didn't smell at all. I took it out of my bag a few days later after it had a chance to ferment in sweat, and you couldn't even tell it had been work. It dried very quickly when damp from sweat. This one is a great shirt and should be included on any trip.

Small, easy to use, lightweight, reliable. These are just a few words to describe it. I've used other headlamps, but I always keep coming back to this one. Provides excellent light and offers practical settings with easy button accessibility. Excellent choice, especially for the price.

Solid Choice

SmartWool Ski Sock - Light

SmartWool Ski Sock - Light

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2009

Provides great padding on the shin, but is also a solid hiking sock. Very warm and durable. It also did a good job of keeping my feet dry and not smelling (which my feet tend to have a problem with). Solid sock all-around.

About as comfortable as they come

Patagonia Midweight Hiking Crew Sock

Patagonia Midweight Hiking Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2009

Great sock. Used for 10 straight days during an 18 day trek/climb. I never thought about my feet once (which is a good sign). They were extremely comfortable, stayed dry, and masked foot odors . . . basically everything you could ask for in a sock. I'm 5'6 and they come up just below my calf/mid-shin.

Great multiple use poles

Black Diamond FlickLock Expedition Poles - 1 Pair

Black Diamond FlickLock Expedition Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2009

I've used these poles in multiple backcountry excursions, casual snow hiking, and even for expedition trekking. I've been extremely happy with them in every instance. They are lightweight and very easy/convenient to store. The flicklock adjusters are great and have held up for me. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the poles themselves, but just be careful with the protective rubber tips, as they don't stay on (I had to tape mine on for trekking use).

Everything I Could Ask For

DAKINE Tour Snowboard Bag

DAKINE Tour Snowboard Bag

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2009

Great durable bag that isn't afraid to take a little abuse. This is a great travel bag that holds not only boots and the board, but has extra room for other gear, like helmets, pants, etc. Definitely glad I got this bag.

Exactly What I Wanted

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2009

This is a good durable climbing shoe that was comfortable (as far as rock climbing shoes are concerned). They've got great grip that lasts, and stretch very very minimally. Two complaints though: one major and one minor: After just 9 months holes developed in the toes and have made using toe holds pretty much out of the question. The minor complaint is that these things smell horrible. I'd tried disinfectant sprays and odor balls, neither of which worked. Maybe it's just me, but I noticed a few other people making similar comments. Overall: Solid shoe, but I wouldn't necessarily put my brand loyalty stamp on these just yet.

Solid, Dependable Pant

686 Smarty Complete 2.5 Ply Pant - Men's

686 Smarty Complete 2.5 Ply Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2009

These are a great snowboard pant that does everything pants are supposed to do: keep you warm, keep you dry, and store your extra stuff. The liner is excellent and dries quick, while it doesn't hold odors. Also, the liners are great at cooling you down while not taking in the snow (also doesn't catch on anything) I would've given this pant 5 stars but noticed a very small tear in a seem near the belt loop in just the 2nd season. Overall though, a great pair of pants.
