The tube tucks away inside the shoulder strap zipper pocket when not in use. You don't notice it when zipped up. It is a sweet pack, I just got one.my edit: on the Covert model the removal of the tube was possible and this backpack seems very simillar.

i think 420d nylon is wateproof, the zipps seem pretty weather sealed too. i have it in black and i think its a great outdoors backpack for a photographer.

i own this backpach and well... it has enough space to carrie my laptom and books. i guess it depends on the school you are attending, lol... . i even use it. for day hikes and as a climbing pack sometimes. this backpack fits MY needs.
