MSR Fuel Pump

October 26, 2009

Before you start replacing parts or the entire pump, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly on the pump leather. This is the part on the end of the plunger that actually forces air in to the fuel bottle. Work the pt in, remove any excess, then pump until you get the air flowing again. The next step would be to replace the rubber o-ring where the plunger seals @ the fuel bottle. This part normally doesn't need to replaced unless it becomes brittle or cracked.

Nikwax Down Wash

Nikwax Down Wash

Rating for this product: 5 October 15, 2009

I was reluctant about washing my down items @ home until I tried Nikwax Down Wash. Most recently I washed my elderly Sierra Designs "Good Goose" down jacket which was in dire need of cleaning. It not only made it look new again by cleaning the shell & revitalizing the loft, but brought back that "Michelin Man" appearance.

Make sure to wash your down items in a front loading washer on the most gentle cycle & totally support the wet items when moving them to the dryer. This will prevent the baffles from tearing since wet down is very heavy.

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

October 12, 2009

All the manufacturers have either converted to or are in the process of making Lindal valve canisters. "Bluet/Camping Gaz/Wonder" is the only hold out & they are not manufacturing new appliances that I'm aware of. Since you're going to an area that doesn't sell the newer type canisters, I'd recommend a liquid gas stove that burns kerosene which is available world-wide. If this doesn't work for you, check eBay. You'll find the older stoves being auctioned from time to time. I hope this helps. Good luck

MSR SuperFly Stove

October 12, 2009

This stove will only work with the screw-on, Lindal valve type: standard compressed gas fuel canisters available from @ least seven different manufacturers & sold wherever camping fuel is sold.

Puncture type canisters are becoming less available prompting compressed gas fuel technology to move on in the backpacking market by developing the Lindal valve canister. It's a great step forward allowing the user to remove the canister without losing all the fuel, & promoting more efficient packing. The new canisters are also lighter in weight.

I think you would like this stove. I purchased one for my son a few years ago. It's easy to install, lightweight for it's size, & very hot.

Coleman Luminos Lantern

October 10, 2009

You'd think any lantern that uses a delicate mantle would also have a hard case for protection but I couldn't find one for the Luminos. My 7oz Primus EasyLight comes with one but not this lantern. Sorry but this is the only case I could find:

MSR Titan Titanium Kettle

October 9, 2009

Not meaning to split hairs & with all due respects, the outer diameter of the MSR Titan kettle is actually 11.2cm (4.375"). 9cm (3.5") height, including the lid pull, is right on the money.

Sierra Designs Verde 20 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree

October 9, 2009

The draft tubes & collars are actually filled with the insulating/fill material, e.g. down, Climashield, etc. This significantly reduces any outside cold air from entering the bag & keeps warm body heat inside where you need it.

MSR WindPro Stove

October 7, 2009

Not only is the WindPro made in the USA but so are most all MSR stoves. The only exception is the Pocket Rocket which is made in Korea, for whatever reason.

bc.com needs to check their "Tech Specs" a little more closely. They have so many items to keep track of & for the most part do a good job, but every once in awhile they'll miss one.

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #2 Sleeping Bag: 25 Degree Down

October 7, 2009

The MontBell sleeping bags do run a little smaller & you're right in the area of the long size. If it was any other manufacturer I would suggest the regular. In my opinion, it would be better to have slightly more sleeping bag than not enough. You don't want sleep cramped if you don't have to.

Sorel Caribou Boot - Men's

October 5, 2009

I'd get the eight. When I buy winter boots, I always want extra room for extra socks. Half a size larger is not that much difference.
