K2 Hellbent Alpine Ski

K2 Hellbent Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 December 2, 2009

It took me a few days to get used to these guys. Obviously, Seth's review is spot on. I asked to have these mounted at +4, but the ski tech messed up and only put them at +2. I was doing wheelies all over the mountain. I took 'em back to get re-mounted at +5, which is where I have them now.

While the rocker makes all skis feel shorter, K2s run a bit long. My 189 cms are enormous. Seth isn't kidding when he says it's a conversation starter. I'm 6'1", 180 lbs and don't have a problem with the 189s. A friend of similar build borrowed 'em a day and felt like it was too much ski. Regardless of whether you go with a 179 or 189, you'll have a blast on these in the pow.

Volkl Gotama Ski

Volkl Gotama Ski

Rating for this product: 5 December 2, 2009

Finally feel like I've put in enough turns with the new Gotamas to leave a thoughtful review. I am so stoked on these skis. For the last couple years, I've been looking for a versatile ski around 100 mm wide. This is it. I can rip tight GS turns on hardpack without compromising stability in crud or powder conditions.

The rocker is fairly gradual and allows the ski to stay on top of new snow. It also makes crud or choppy powder a breeze since the tip is raised and there's no worries on them diving under. The thing that stands out about the Gotamas is the stability. I can lean into the front of my boot and confidently power through anything - crud, chunks of ice, chopped pow, anything.

I'll rock these 75% of the time at my home mountain, Vail. If I want to go for a lap in East Vail, no problem. I have a pair of K2 Hellbents and Rossi S3s, but wouldn't hesitate using the Gotamas as a one-quiver ski.

I have my skis mounted at boot center (0). I don't have any problems with the tails washing out. The tails are playful, i.e. soft, so don't dispute it being an issue for some. I see it more of an asset for popping into switch or jibbing.

Radiums Rip

Garmont Radium Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Garmont Radium Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

I used to tour in my alpine boots, but after painfully scrambling up a scree-field on a 14er in Colorado, I made the decision to get some AT boots. I talked to a good friend who manages the Surefoot store in Beaver Creek and he said the Radiums were the best AT boot out there.

When I first put them on, my toes felt pretty pinched. I have some serious foot problems (bunions), but have heard from others that they have the same issue. Regardless, after a bunion-punch and the heated liner fit, they felt great. By no means are they as stiff as an alpine race boot, but they felt solid enough for my hefty touring setup (K2 Hellbents + Marker Dukes).

I tried on the Tecnica Agent AT boots, which were extremely comfortable and roomy, but too soft.

These boots rock. Like others below, I had to some work on the liners. Once dialed in, however, they're great. By no means are they as stiff as a racing alpine shell, but they're burly enough for my K2 Hellbent + Marker Duke setup. I tried on a pair of Tecnica Agent AT boots, which were a lot roomier, but noticeably softer.

Backcountry Access Alpine Trekker Adaptors

April 6, 2009

Have two ski setups: 1) 189 cm K2 Hellbents with Marker Dukes and, 2) 179 cm Rossi Sickbirds (S5) with Marker race bindings. I'm wondering just how heavy these Trekkers are going to be. Will it be any lighter than my Hellbent + Duke setup? How heavy are they, in and of themselves? Can't find tech specs. I'd like to use them with the Sickbirds.
