  • Stomping Grounds:

Roundabouts Maryville, TN but I like to roam...
  • Bio:

Howdy. I grew up in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Most recently, I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2009, walking from Springer Mtn, Georgia to Katahdin, Maine from March 12th to September 2nd. I graduated from Maryville College in 2008 and I am trying as hard as humanly possible not to grow up, obtain a remotely professional or office-sitting job, or have any regularity what-so-ever in my life. Since graduating, I have backpacked through 17 countries, thru-hiked the A.T., and am currently planning a thru-hike of the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada's for 2010. From there, who knows where I will be or what I will be doing, but I am sure it will be interesting, involve lots of traveling, and will not be associated with careers, desks, phones, or other mind-numbingly boring aspects of American life...

Vasque Celerator Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 February 25, 2010

I wore these shoes for the last section of my A.T. thru-hike. I bought them in Massachusetts and before I had logged 50 miles on them the mesh was separating from the sole in the toe-box on both sides of each shoe. They continued to separate on each side until I had gaping 2 inch holes between the sole and mesh in two places on each shoe, clearly a manufacturing error. I tried to get Vasque to swap them out on the trail but they would not mail me a new pair until I had returned the defective pair. I had to wear them all the way to Katahdin with huge holes in them! When I returned home I did file a claim with Vasque and they replaced the shoes with the same pair, but that is little help since I have no faith in this pair of shoes.

GREAT for ULTRA-LIGHTERS!

MontBell Ultralight Thermawrap Insulation Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Thermawrap Insulation Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 22, 2010

I am a 2009 A.T. Thru-hiker and I was not really an ultra-lighter when I started my trip. I came to realize just how much clothing weighs sometime around mid-Virginia when I was still carrying all my winter clothes... This jacket solves the weight issue while still providing exceptional warmth. It is especially handy if traveling in an area that receives heavy rainfall because it will keep you warm even if it is wet, which a down jacket will not do. And at 8.8 ounces, it really can't be beat! There are no extra frills with this jacket, which is why it is so light and yet still so warm.

Best Ultralight Pack on the Market

Osprey Packs Exos 58 Backpack - 3356-3722cu in

Osprey Packs Exos 58 Backpack - 3356-3722cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 7, 2009

I thru-hiked the A.T. this year with the Osprey Aether 70. I loved the pack and its fit, but by New England I had sent half of the features of the pack home to cut down on weight. Now I am planning for the John Muir Trail next summer and want to go ultralight (or more so, that is). I bought this pack and have taken it on several weekend trips in the Smokies and Joyce Kilmer Forest. It has a great, comfortable fit and all the extra compartments of other Osprey packs, just in a lighter version. With this lighter pack I get to carry my Montbell 15 down sleeping bag and Thermarest pad in the pack for the same weight as the Aether 70 was by itself. It's a no brainer for any long distance hike were weight matters.

The North Face Spectrum 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Spectrum 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2008

This is a great tent overall. It has been through many week long trips in the Smoky Mountains as well as a 2 month backpacking trip through Europe. It is roomier than most two-person tents in my experience and holds up well against all elements. It does create condensation on the inside of the tent after a night of breathing in a damp place. I have encountered this problem with several tents made by other companies also. It is just one of those things you have to deal with; your not supposed to be as comfortable as you are in your bed at home. Overall this is a great tent and a good investment.

Great Pack

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4000-4400cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 3, 2008

The Aether 70L pack is just downright amazing. I took it backpacking through twelve countries in Europe for two months and it held up like a dream. The waist belt can be custom molded to your body at any outdoor store, but if you just wear it around the house for a few hours with about 25 lbs in it the belt will mold to your frame on its own. I (contrary to popular opinion) really like the fact that the pack is top-loading, because when you are backpacking through Europe it would be easy for a pickpocket to steal something out of an outside pocket; whereas, with the Aether 70 I knew my stuff would be safe. I have taken it on several three and five day long trips in the Smokies and on the A.T. and I have nothing bad to say about this pack it all. It is well worth your $$$

These pants were a great buy. They are made of sturdy fabric and materials and look really good too. I was very impressed with these pants, and I ended up buying two more pairs.
