Straight out of the box, straight up the mountain.

La Sportiva Quantum Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2011

Two days after these arrived I put them through their first test (and my first test in a long time) in a climb up Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks. I couldn't have been happier. The MorphoDynamic sole just works. Normally I find every pointed rock on the trail. This time? Nothing. I even tried to step on some and felt no discomfort. And they stick to everything which is a definite plus for a klutz like myself.

Even more amazing is that they required no real break in time. A little tight out of the box they've only gotten more comfortable as I've worn them but on that first trip, literally the first time I wore them outside, I didn't experience any hot spots or have problems with rubbing or blisters.

They're a little funky looking but I hate boring shoes and the "weave" created by the laces and supports is pretty sharp.

La Sportiva Quantum Trail Running Shoe - Men's

November 24, 2011

I've only worn the Wildcat in a store and I remember it being on the stiff side compared to the Quantum. That being said, I love the MorphoDynamic sole. Plenty of support and cushioning and it grips everything.

Daily dose of Arc'teryx

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2011

I picked the Gamma LT up as an impulse purchase. It was 45% off and as an Arc'teryx addict I couldn't pass that up. I haven't regretted it one bit. It's now my daily jacket and it works great on the trails and in the bar. The titanium color is very sharp and I love the little detail of the green zipper. We all need a little bright color in our life.

Performance wise it's an incredibly versatile piece. Hiking, snowshoeing, around town, I've had no complaints. I've even used it as a cycling jacket when I've forgotten my Pearl Izumi jacket. I've yet to feel clammy and wind is rarely a problem, nothing a good fleece underneath can't cure. I've actually had a couple of people sprinkle water on me while wearing it because they love watching the DWR finish in action.

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2011

I've worn Havaianas for years for the ease of use when I'm driving tens of thousands of miles over the summer for work. For the most part I drive barefoot and needed something for getting in and out of the van. Unfortunately that led to a lot of pain and discomfort from my toes needing to grip them while walking. A fan of the Zs, I wear them non-stop whenever I'm not driving, I decided to give the Flips a chance.

It was the perfect solution. They fit snug and secure enough that your toes no long have to grip to keep them on and the sole provides ample support. They're a little harder to slip on and off but mine also aren't fully broken in yet.

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 22, 2011

Great material, really lightweight, and comfortable... I just wish they didn't have the liner. (Unfortunately that's a problem with most shorts of this type.) I'm a big fan of wearing my Ex-Officios with running shorts and it just adds another layer, though one that you get used to. Thought about cutting it out but the backpocket is part of it so that would render it useless.

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 March 18, 2011

Wore these on a recent hike up Mýrdalsjökull Glacier in Iceland and they were perfect. Myself and my friends (who are not the most adventurous people) had no experience with crampons and we had no problems with them. The strapping is a little unusual if you've never done it before (and your guide's native language isn't English) but once we figured it out they went on no problem and stayed on. It took no time for any of us to get used to them and surprisingly no one dinged up their pants.

Patagonia Lightweight Guide Pant - Men's

Patagonia Lightweight Guide Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 28, 2011

I want to love these pants, I really do. The material, the weight, the comfort, the details all great. My one and only problem with them is the length. If you're a shorter guy they're just too long. The scuff guards are the main culprit. They don't allow the pant leg to fall easily past your boats or shoes and you end up with bulging all the way up your shins.

If you're tall(er), buy 'em, they're great.

For use in water I'd recommend Chacos, they don't get that "float" you will get with Keens if you're swimming. Plus they can get kind of heavy when wet. However if the hiking around the rivers that you're doing is very rocky and you want protection then I'd say the Newports.

Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock

Eagles Nest Outfitters DoubleNest Hammock

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2011

The single best piece of gear I've ever bought. So small that it goes with me everywhere. It's always in my car in case I need it, taking up no space, and when I'm out I can easily toss it in my backpack or clip it onto just about any place on my pack. Set up is a breeze, I use both the ENO straps and/or boats straps depending on where I am. Go with the double over the single, you'll appreciate the extra space for yourself and the ability to fold it over you on a cold night. Or for an extra person on a cold night.
