The Membrain layer. Adds waterproofing but also a slight bit of weight and cuts down on breathability a tad bit. Personally I think it's worth it.

I know it's an obvious answer but have you tried shifting the tongue/fabric around? I had a similar problem on the top of my foot where the laces kept it tight to my foot. By playing with it for a bit the problem disappeared immediately.

I use the Keens for more hazardous situations. When I'll be in rocky areas or anytime that I might hit my toes on something. (I do it way too often.) Other than that I use the Chacos, especially if I'm going to be spending the day in a river or lake.

KEEN Newport H2 Sandal - Men's
January 24, 2011
For use in water I'd recommend Chacos, they don't get that "float" you will get with Keens if you're swimming. Plus they can get kind of heavy when wet. However if the hiking around the rivers that you're doing is very rocky and you want protection then I'd say the Newports.

Boots should be no problem. The jacket would depend on which size you bought and how much you spread it out. If it's tight enough and you spread the jacket out it would be safe.

I like the MSRs because of their adaptability. They're shorter for when you're not in deep powder and don't need the flotation. Then you can add the tails in even of deep snow. Plus they're fairly indestructible and have a great warranty.
