Mammut Tusk Climbing Rope - 9.8mm

Mammut Tusk Climbing Rope - 9.8mm

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2009

This rope is indeed light, less than 8.5 pounds, of course thats not counting any dirt you pick up--and you will indeed be very aware of this rope getting dirty. As Adriano said, use a rope tarp.

I have been climbing on this rope all summer, and have what I would say is pretty normal "fuzzing" on the sheath for three months of pretty active climbing in Montana.

As other reviewers have said, this is a great first rope, or a light single on the cheap side. I will probably get a Infinity when its time to replace this rope.

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 August 11, 2009

These bindings are awesome for freeriders. They are light, stiff, and comfy! So Ideal. The leather straps form wonderfully to the shape of your boot and don't create any pressure points like some other bindings I've owned. I was almost done with burton bindings after my last pair weighed so much, but I took a chance and tried these cause they matched my new Arbor Coda so nicely. Burton has made a lot of improvements in the last few years that have really stepped these bindings up. The FLAD (Forward Lean Adjuster) is now a tool-less knob that is easily adjusted on the fly, and the straps themselves are easily adjusted. The ratcheting device is solid on the top and bottom straps.

The cartel cap strap is a little different than the prior cap straps burton put out. This one looks like a regular strap but it has a notch in the middle, works much better.

These feel solid and high tech, I would say worth every dollar. Burton also has rad customer service, assuming backcountry.com doesn't take care of problems first.

Wild Country Climber's Belt

Wild Country Climber's Belt

Rating for this product: 4 August 11, 2009

As far as technical belts go this thing is pretty rad. The reversibility somewhat handy. The design looks orange in the pictures, but it is infact red. For normal wear you don't need to double back, its not going anywhere, but doubled back it will be rock solid for emergency uses. Side note, it can only be doubled back red side out. The webbing is one and a quarter inches wide, about an eight inch thick.

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

August 9, 2009

Indeed it is important to understand that beacons emit flux lines, the beacon can pick up on a flux line, but it doesn't natively know what direction the line is going, because it is part of a loop. (Check the attached pic from the Tracker manual.) As Evan said, watch that the distance isn't increasing. If it is, just turn in place and start going the other direction.

Here is the link to the owners manual:

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

August 9, 2009

As the folks below said, this is an avalanche transceiver, not some James Bond gadget. The only "vitals" beacon I have seen is the Mammut/Barryvox, but that beast is $450.

As was also said below, the DOES handle multiple victims. There are several methods to multiple searches with the Tracker, so be sure to read the supplemental info provided and practice!!

Most effective beacon ever.

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 August 9, 2009

This little beacon is about as good as it gets. Turn it on, strap it on, and forget about it. The harness is pretty comfortable, and when you need to use it you'll be thankful they put it on a leash. Thankfully I have never had a need for this little guy in a real world scenario, but having done practice drills with it, I can't imagine improving on its method. Every time I go out and practice with other experienced beacon users, the people with Trackers are always there first. Thats mostly due to the dual antenna design and the way that they pick up the transmitting beacon and zero in on the flux line.

If you are looking for a lifeline in the backcountry, this is it. As with all safety gear, learn to use it before you go trusting your life or others with it.

Stiff slippers

Salomon F22 Snowboard Boot - Men's

Salomon F22 Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 9, 2009

These boots are excellent. I ride in the Bozeman, MT area mostly, and in my last few pairs of boots, I would get sore feet after a hard day of riding, but on in these. These have great foot support and they lace as tight as you want them. The external lacing system is near flawless. The cord is tough and will stand up to your hardest pulls to get the tightness you want, and the lace lock off is perfect and will not slip. That said, the reason I only rated these near perfect boots is the lacing system on the liner, specifically the lock off part. The laces will pull really tight, but what takes the longest to do when putting these boots on is getting the cord to lock off! To be fair, one of the boots locks off really well, but the other boot is a struggle to get the cord to seat properly and lock off, usually requiring me to push it in.Other than that, I will definitely be sticking with Salomons!

Tough bag to stand up to airline baggage handlers!

OGIO Terminal Rolling Bag - 5800cu in

OGIO Terminal Rolling Bag - 5800cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2009

I love this bag. I can live for weeks out of this bag. TSA and the airlines can't even put a scuff on it. The material this bag is made out of is some tough stuff! The zippers aren't going to give way easily either, they are big and well sewn. There are several handles on this bag, one on the top (not including the extending handle), and on the bottom. The front of the bag has two more handles, and the side has yet another. Brilliant! The wheels are on some really smooth bearings, on skater wheels too. So smooth.

As indicated by the description, there is a suit hanger, kinda handy, but really you don't need it if you pack this bag like I do. A lot of people don't think you can pack a bag like this for an international trip--those people are not backcountry.com people though :D Lots of space in this rad case.

The front face has a really nice shoe compartment, keeps your nasty shoes separate from your cloths. There are lots of mesh compartments to keep your underoos and your socks in place :D

Oakley Montefrio Sunglasses

Oakley Montefrio Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 4 August 5, 2009

Got these shades on SAC, not a bad pair of shades. They say on my head pretty well when I'm wearing them, but don't rest them on top of your head. They have no rubber grips, so they will throw themselves off your head.

I have the green/gold, love the look. Not the best shades I own, but pretty stylish.

DAKINE Rail Belt

DAKINE Rail Belt

Rating for this product: 4 August 5, 2009

I got this belt a few years ago when I broke the belt that had been holding up my snowpants. I like dakine stuff, and this belt it pretty good as belts go. However, since there are two clasps holding the webbing to the buckle, you can run into problems if you put a lot of stress on it. A handful of times the buckle you don't normally need to adjust has come undone. Still, its a good belt and you can never have enough ways to open a beer!

Good for the money

Black Diamond Focus Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Black Diamond Focus Speed Adjust Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 4, 2009

There may be more cushy harnesses out there, but I don't think I would bother. I've taken whippers in this, I've held leaders taking whippers with this. Comfy! The only time I wish it had more padding was when I was belaying a hangdog. No big, the harness only makes so much difference for that situation...

The four molded loops feel really solid so far, and the speed adjusts are fast and solid!

A word on sizing, I have a medium harness and wear a 30 to 32 waist.

This lamp is wicked bright. I use this for biking, hiking, and climbing. It is great for everything I've needed it for so far. The three red led's on the back are also quite bright. Also, it has quite a comfortable headband.

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 4 August 3, 2009

I'm all for tubular belay devices for rappeling, in fact, my figure 8 spends most of climbing days in my pack, and I never use it for belaying. That said, sometimes figure 8's are kinda... fun... If you know what you're doing and have a leather glove on, you can zip down a rope on an 8 in no time! Also really cool to impress people that have never used one. Also fun to do "SWAT" or inverted rappels with a figure 8.

Petzl Ecrin Roc Climbing Helmet

August 3, 2009

Wanted to follow up this question by saying that I bought the Ecrin Roc. Two things about it. This helmet does indeed sit high, at least on my head. I popped out one of the suspension webbing connections and the webbing is sewn together, so the height on which it sits on your head is indeed, as Bryan said, not adjustable. So, you're kind of stuck with how high it sits on your head.

THAT SAID, I really like this helmet. The speed adjust wheels make it so fast to pop this thing on your head and turn the little wheels till it is snug. Clip the chin strap and boom, you're done adjusting. The ventilation is really nice and breezy in the summer, and the headlamp clips work perfectly. Some reviewers have said this helmet is heavy on your head, but once I put it on, its so comfy I forget I'm even wearing it.

This helmet is a classic for a reason.

Black Diamond Quicksilver Quickpack Quickdraws

August 3, 2009

I use both these quicksilvers with the strait/bent gates, as well as wiregate draws. To me, the differences are subtle. Your ability to clip a bolt or the rope when lead climbing has a lot to do with your familiarity with the draw and your personally dexterit. I really like the bent gate when clipping the rope, that is a big positive. If you are looking to get your first set of draws, this is a great pack to get your rack started.

Screwgate is great for rapping.

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2009

I love carrying a few big 'biners for those times when your belay loop is getting crowded and you need something that stands above the mess. The rocklock is about 4" long, 2.5" at the top and about 1.5" near the bottom. Obviously, the keylock nose is really nice because it doesn't catch ropes or the loop on your belay device. While it is a little heavy, this is a great locker for multipitch because of its versatility.

Only drawback is that it might not fit through some sport anchors, like chains.

'Tiva Barracudas

La Sportiva Barracuda Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Barracuda Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2009

These shoes are as good of shoe as I've worn. They hold on ridiculously tiny edges and smear like a champ. The sensitivity is moderate, but I don't mind that so much since it doesn't hurt as bad to put all your weight on a tiny little pin of a rock. These shoes have taken everything Montana has thrown at them so far. They are stiff, agressive, and reliable.

Some people complain about laces, but the asymetrical laces are fast cinch this shoe nicely to your foot. Besides, how much longer does it take to tie a shoe...

On the sizing, I have these in a 41.5 and I wear a 9-10 US street shoe.

Also, as stated by another reviewer, these shoes don't seem to stink. And I don't think they get too hot.

The 'cudas rock, end of story.

Awesome Belay Biner

DMM Boa Carabiner

DMM Boa Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

I got the Boa because I was looking for a big biner to use as for belay. I wanted a big biner for those times when your belay loop is getting a little crammed for space at the anchors. DMM delivers big with the boa. It elevates the belay device from the loop perfectly for me. I got the locksafe for extra security on the belay, and the operation is buttery smooth once you get used to the hand motion of opening the gate.

This is a big biner, so its a little heavy, but DMM isn't joking when it comes to using beam design in their biners. This thing has an awesome weigh/size ratio. I'll post a picture with a size comparison when I get a chance.

This carabiner is awesome for HMS's and belay devices, but thats about it. Even though it has a fairly slim profile for hooking into pro and anchors, I don't think I'd use it for much else beyond belay.

Petzl Ecrin Roc Climbing Helmet

May 5, 2009

Does the Ecrin Roc always sit really high on people's heads? I tried one on and it looked, well, goofy. I could live with goofy, but I want to make sure that it still protects when its that high.

Yes, it was all properly adjusted in the forehead, but the suspension held it quite high.

Are they all like this? Also, the suspension system webbing is sewn at the factory so that part its not adjustable.

Ideas, experience?
