Kung Fu Chicken

AlpineAire Kung Fu Chicken

AlpineAire Kung Fu Chicken

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

Delicious—much better than canned foods. Very spicy hot. High in salt (eating one packet which is two servings provides about 70% of the RDA in salt). As good as some high quality frozen dinners. The consistency, is a little like left over Chinese food all mixed together, but it is still delicious. Some AlpineAire freeze dried food requires cooking after the addition of water—this product is not one of those—just is add hot water and stir. I would buy this packet again and be happy with it.

Mary Jane's Spuds

Mary Janes Farm Organic Spuds w/ Spinach and Cheese

Mary Janes Farm Organic Spuds w/ Spinach and Cheese

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

Absolutely delicious—as good as mashed potatoes from a top notch restaurant or grandma’s kitchen. I was scraping the sides of the package to get every last bite. The consistency was exactly like mashed potatoes. High in salt (eating one packet which is two servings provides about 70% of the RDA in salt). I would buy this packet again and be very happy with it—maybe even eat it at home!

True simmer control

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

Tested the simmer control by cooking jasmine rice (not minute rice) and black-eyed peas (starting from dried beans)—both of which require much less than full blast boiling. The simmer level could be set to cook both of these items at a level equal to the special simmer burner on my gas range at home. In fact, the Dragonfly simmer control could be set even lower than what was needed (down to the advertised birthday candle level). The level was not tricky to set, it was stable (both the heat and the gas control lever), and minute adjustments were possible. It is a great stove with true heat control—I love this stove!

I cannot fit the stove into the MSR Blacklite cook set without the lid popping off. Maybe it’s just me.

Easy cleanup

MSR Blacklite Gourmet Cookset

MSR Blacklite Gourmet Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

The non-stick feature of the pans was tested in two ways: 1) by frying two eggs without oil or butter and 2) cooking Jasmine rice (not minute rice). Neither the eggs nor the rice stick to the pans, but they do cling a little. The eggs could be flipped with the MSR spatula, but it did require a bit of prodding. The pans cleaned up with only a few gentle scrapes with the MSR spatula or spoon, followed by a wipe with the shammy. Had this test been done with my father’s aluminum uncoated pans, the clean up would be long and require much scrubbing with a wire scouring pads—I can testify.

Soups, chili, and beans present no challenge whatsoever to the non-stick pans. The food sauce beaded up on the sides of the pans and cleaned up is a rinse with water and a couple of shammy wipes.

Two cups of water boil in about two minutes which is consistent with the boil time of 1.75 minutes predicted by the MSR Dragon Fly stove specs.

30 oz. capacity

MSR 33oz Red Fuel Bottle

MSR 33oz Red Fuel Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

Bottle has a sturdy feel, yet light weight. The O-ring seals work fine.

The bottle holds 33 oz., but there is a line which one is not to fill beyond. This line is at 30 oz. This is not a problem by itself, but it causes a difficulty when estimating how much fuel one needs using the MSR specs. The specs for some of the MSR stoves are in terms of using a 22 oz. fuel bottle. The question is how much fuel was in this 22 oz. bottle—20 oz.? If so, then one can use the spec. to estimate fuel requirements for the 33 oz. bottle. Even if this issue is not resolved, at most this introduces a 10% ambiguity in fuel requirement estimates and so for most campers this is nothing to worry about—just bring another 10% more fuel to be safe.

Measuring cup too

MSR Alpine Spoon

MSR Alpine Spoon

Rating for this product: 5 October 8, 2003

There are two nice features of this spoon. ¾ of the spoon ‘bowl’ is rounded and ¼ is flat. The flat side is useful for scraping the side of the pans during clean up. Also the spoon can be used as measuring cup. There are markings at 1 tablespoon (15ml), 2 tablespoons (30ml), ¼ cup (45 ml), and 1/3 cup (60ml). It was handy because one of my recipes called for 2 and ¼ cup of water. Despite it being light weight, it is not flimsy. When folded it fits inside the MSR Blacklite pans.
