Nice little pack

CamelBak Cloud Walker Hydration Pack

CamelBak Cloud Walker Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 4 June 26, 2009

The cloudwalker is a great pack for day hikes, around town use, even ultralight overnighters. The quality of the materials and stitching is top notch. Just what I have come to expect from camelbak. The zippered pocket in the front has a nice little organizer and the main pocket is surprisingly roomy for such a small pack. It has a flexible back panel that offer a little support, but if you stuff it the pack will deform and will no longer sit flat on your back. The 'frame sheet' is flexible enough that you can actually fold the pack in half to pack it. It is comfortable for me at a weight of around 15 lbs total. This pack has been dropped, thrown, folded and smashed, dragged, filled to the brim with geodes, and submerged, and is still no worse for wear other than a little tear on the mesh bottle pocket.
I really only have one complaint about the cloudwalker. The new generation (pictured here in black. The blue one in the detail view is a different generation) doesn't have a waistbelt. If it had one, I would give it 5 stars for versatility and value because at $60 you are buying a $25 bladder and a nice pack for $35.

Hydro Photon Water Bottle Pre-Filter

June 25, 2009

It's a Nylon screen that is removable, so it can be rinsed out and reused endlessly. The number of uses between cleanings depends upon how much debris there is in the water you are filtering.
Just to clarify for everyone, the blue part is not a drinking spout, it is an air vent. This cap is only made for filling water bottles, not for drinking out of them.

Coleman Hibernation Sleeping Bag

March 26, 2009

No doubt SealLine makes a bag it would fit in. Check out the Baja dry bag. That's what I use in my kayak. They come in a variety of sizes. It would probably be tight in a 40L and have some wiggle room in a 55L http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAS0436/SealLine-Baja-Dry-Bags.html

Backcountry.com Goat Klean Kanteen - 40 oz

March 26, 2009

Cold working 18/8 can form subtle ferromagnetic characteristics. I'm guessing that Klean Kanteens are made from a blank using several dies, which could explain the magnetism. Just a theory.

Shimano America SH-R085 Road Cycling Shoe

March 11, 2009

If your pedal is the PD A520, any shoe with SPD compatibility (two screw holes in the bottom) will work with it. You just need the compatible cleat for it (SH56)Just a side note, that type of pedal is called clipless. Toe clips are cages that go around the toe section of a shoe.

Shimano America Saint Front Hydraulic Mountain Bike Disc Brake - 6-Bolt

March 5, 2009

The saint will mount to the Wotan just fine. Note that the adapter that comes with it is international standard for a 203mm rotor. If your Wotan has post mount (which I believe they all do) you will have to run a 203mm rotor. I suppose you are doing that already. As for the lever, as long as the master cylinder of the XT is the same diameter as the Saint master cylinder it should work fine. I would call up shimano and ask them if the m800 caliper is compatible with your levers.

Shimano America Shimano LX Dual Control Lever, Caliper & Rotor Kit - Hydraulic - REAR

March 5, 2009

It depends on which generation of saint hubs. The original Saint hubs (labeled M800) used a bigger than normal centerlock system. I believe the newer saint hubs (M810) have the same centerlock system as these brakes.

CamelBak Hydration Pack Cleaning Kit

March 5, 2009

Feeding the brush through the tube can be difficult. Remove the bite valve from the tube and feed the brush through that way. Just give it a good tug; it will come off. Do NOT remove the tube from the bladder. Sometimes the brush can get stuck while you are feeding it through. Notice that the long grey plastic line the brush is attached to is curved from where it was rolled up during packaging. If you bend the tube in the same direction as this curve it will be easier to push through. Otherwise just wiggle it around and eventually it will work it's way through. Good luck. It takes a little practice to get it to work, but the tube will be nice and clean after.

a nice shirt

The North Face Chesterton Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Chesterton Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 5, 2009

This shirt is decent quality at a reasonable price. I am 6' 170 lbs and have a medium. It is a little short in the arms for me, and a bit tight across the chest but the large was far to baggy in the stomach. It is a more casual cut for sure. The material seems pretty good quality. I have used it with a pack and do not see any pilling on the surface. If you are looking for a shirt that can be worn skiing and around town, it is pretty good. Oh, and like others said, the logo is the same as the body color on mine (black). 4 stars because it doesn't quite fit my freakishly long 78" wingspan.

GSI Outdoor Lexan Teaspoon

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

It's cheap. It's light. It's tough. What more could you want? Holds up well to heat, will not stain (mine is blue) or keep any taste. Unfortunately I lost mine at the bottom of a valley in Big South Fork. If anyone finds it and packs it out, I owe them a beer.

Nikwax TX Direct Wash In

March 3, 2009

This product is for breathable items such as rain shells. Tent & gear proof is what you should be using on your pack, especially since it looks like some of the body of the aether is 200D nylon. To help extend the life of your pack, just make sure it's clean and dry before you put it away for storage.

Thank you Smartwool

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Mid Crew Sock

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Mid Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 February 27, 2009

These are great socks. Period. Okay, I was unsure about spending $20 on a single pair of socks, but it is possibly the best $20 I have ever spent. The tight knit on the top keeps the socks in place, and saves room for the padding where you need it in the bottom. Multi-day hike foot pain is now all but gone. Buy some and your feet will thank you.

Outdoor Research Helium Quick Sacks

Outdoor Research Helium Quick Sacks

Rating for this product: 3 February 27, 2009

It's a stuff sack. They are pretty darn water resistant. The handle on the back is a nice touch, but I have torn one where it attaches. Personally I like the granite gear cordura ones a little better.

Reliable as the sun

Kelty Redwing Backpack - 2650-3100cu in

Kelty Redwing Backpack - 2650-3100cu in

Rating for this product: 4 February 27, 2009

For all of it's flaws, I still love this pack for the simple reason that it is tough as nails. I bought one as my first backpacking pack and it saw many miles. It has a lot of organization to it with several pockets, nice compression straps, and gear loops sewn on the bottom (at least my generation did). Plus I LOVE the Schaefer cinch on the waist belt. Unfortunately the biggest problem with this pack is the waist belt. There is just not enough padding on it to carry weight comfortably. I moved to a Gregory as my multi-day pack, but still use this all the time for air travel, trail work, car camping, 4x4 trips, etc, etc... If I had to define the redwing, I'd call it a work/utility pack with a little bit of trail blood mixed in. Hats off to Kelty for workhorse of a pack with top notch quality for a very reasonable price.

The infamous sigg

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Rating for this product: 5 February 27, 2009

Yes they cost a lot. Yes they are trendy. Yes they dent. Most important they are good quality. I have had juice and tea in it and have no residual taste. My nalgene cannot do that. A lot of people hate them for being trendy, but contrary to what some of them say they are lighter than a nalgene (not that it matters). Also aluminum DOES NOT rust when it is dented. Don't know where that one came from. I have also heard concerns about how aluminum can leech dangerous chemicals into water. That is why sigg coats the inside of the bottles with a completely inert polymer.
Anyway, one of my favorite things about it is now that I spent that money on a nice bottle, I want to use it. All the time. I drink more water, less soft drinks, and waste far less bottles and cans. Dare I say this bottle has saved me money. Whether or not they are in vougue in the future, I hope sigg keeps making the best quality bottles money can buy.

Baselayer only

Mountain Hardwear Lightweight Power Stretch Zip T - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Lightweight Power Stretch Zip T - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 18, 2009

A nice form fitting base layer. It is a little long in the waist for my taste, but that may be good for others. Lightweight and offers good warmth for it's weight. It also moves and breathes very well. Mountain hardwear says that it can be worn alone on cool days. It can ONLY be worn alone if you do not have a pack. I went on an 8 mile trail run with a camelback classic with maybe 50 oz of water in it. After the run there was bad pilling on the shoulders and across the chest where the straps were. Very disappointing. The function of the shirt is great (extremely good wicking thanks to the polartech material), but it's not as versatile as I had hoped. The North face Matrix is still my go-to shirt for multipurpose use. If only the matrix came in a half zip with a collar.

Versatile Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2009

It is still young (2 months), but here's a short term review. I mainly use the synchro backpacking, mountain biking, and occasionally around town. The shell is exceptionally water resistant while remaining very soft. So far I do not see any damage from pack wear or rock rubs, but it is too early to tell. I have very long arms, and the large does fit them pretty well. There is a lot of extra room for layering. I can easily fit a fleece and down vest under it. It is not a wind proof layer, but is good enough to stop anything but the most violent winds. Cinch cords around the waist and neck are very effective at keeping out the wind and rain/snow. The main pockets open with waterproof zips to reveal enormous vent pockets that reach from the bottom to the front seam. The pockets are very high to allow for clearance of your pack's waistbelt, which is a little awkward if you wear it casually. If you are looking for a casual jacket, check out the g50. It is built from the same materials, but cut a little longer, a little trimmer, and with the pockets in a more comfortable position.

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 10, 2009

It is probably a little lighter than your windstopper. If you are going to be active, you will probably overheat in anything above 45 degrees. Backpacking I was warm in it down to single digits with a lightweight fleece under. It is good for around town in crisp (40-55 degree) weather. But if you are looking for city use, I would look at the g50. It is very similar but has a little more casual cut.

The North Face Rock 22 Tent - 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Rock 22 Tent - 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 April 10, 2008

This is a review for the old style with the full length pole sleeves

I paid full retail on this tent, and it has proven well worthy of that price. I have used it on riding and backpacking trips and it has performed very well for such a low price point. The large dual vestibules are roomy and very convenient for gear storage and removing wet and muddy clothing. The large mesh panels are nice for the clear summer nights, and there is a good amount of room for 2 people. The place where this tent really shines is in the windy stuff. with the tent floor, both vestibules, and all four guy lines staked down, this tent is really bulletproof.

The major weakness of this tent (other than it is a touch heavy) is the ventilation. On still, humid nights, condensation will form on the inside of the fly. Staking the vestibules out a little further and higher will help a little with this problem.

All in all, I am very pleased with this tent and would highly recommend it.
