Garmont Prophet NTN Thermo Boot - Men's

February 10, 2010

Rumor has it you can ride NTN boots with the bishop bindings. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'm pretty sure I saw a guy riding this boot in the bishops and thought it would definitely be another plus to buying NTN boots

Mammut Respect Pack - 1830cu in

Mammut Respect Pack - 1830cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 1, 2009

Great ski mountaineering pack. I use this pack for Ski patrolling and my personal ski adventures. I like the fact that you have 2 options for ski carry (diagonal and A frame) and that the diagonal carry strap is retractable for when your not using it. The removable straps and helmet holder are nice touches allowing you to customize the pack to your style (even works for snowboards). 2 ice axe loops are nice as well. The velvety lined goggle pocket works well for your phone, glasses and other small odds and ends. 2 spacious compartments accommodate all your gear. The smaller rear pocket holds all your avalanche gear and even has a sleeve for your probe, the larger one has a side access zipper and holds extra layers, skins, FA kit, everything needed for a day in the back country. You can also strip the waist belt to save weight. My only complaint is that it's harder to mount a knife or radio harness to the shoulder straps than other packs, but I assume this is not a commonly sought after feature of a pack. This pack also works very well for summer day trips or even over nighters. this pack can do everything almost all other specialty packs do in the same size range. Bottom line: Mammut quality and multisport capability.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

September 1, 2009

I'd keep the size you have and tweak your lacing before exchanging them. Make sure the laces are tight low on your ankle and high on your instep to help retain your heel better. Ive had mine for several years and I still have trouble with blisters IF I don't take the right measures. I tape my heels and wear 2 thin socks, as long as I do this I have no trouble.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 1, 2009

Had these boots for 6 years and still going strong. Done everything from 100+ miles trips in the Windrivers to summiting Rainier in them. They work well for just about any activity down to freezing temps. They dry fast and are very water resistant right out of the box. The only con is that they do run a little narrow (easily alleviated by either trimming the insoles or custom footbeds) and they do need substantial break-in time, but once its done these boots will provide years of reliable service. My next boots will be LaSportiva.

Petzl Nomad 9.8mm Climbing Rope

Petzl Nomad 9.8mm Climbing Rope

Rating for this product: 5 September 1, 2009

Love this rope, after several trips in different conditions this rope is proving to be durable and consistent. The climb ready coil is a nice touch as well. The dry treatment works very well and I can still smell it when rappelling haha. Hard to go wrong with this do it all rope.

Excellent stove

Optimus Nova Plus Stove

Optimus Nova Plus Stove

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2009

I love my Nova+. It works like new every time. It is easy to use and cooks very efficiently. Very well built and highly packable. This stove simmers as well as any other. I love the versatility of its multifuel capability although I burn almost exclusively white gas (Coleman fuel). my only complaint is that with the + model, you need to have to fuel line in-line with the valve (as you adjust it on the bottle end but twisting the whole hose) Other than that absolutely the best stove I have ever used.

Stellar tent

Black Diamond Ahwahnee Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Black Diamond Ahwahnee Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2009

Easily the most simple and versatile tent on the market. This tent preforms well in cold snowy conditions and is unbeatable when it comes to desert camping. the tent has excellent ventilation and its single wall design allows it to be sealed to keep the sand out. easy to set up and quiet in the wind. Not one but two optional vestibules allow you to customize the tent to any trip and give you the option of saving weight when you don't need them. the fabric breaths well and is more effective at managing moisture than any other I've seen on the market. Simply put, there is nothing not to like about this tent. simple, durable, everything you need, nothing you don't.

Simple, straight forward

Ortovox F1 Focus Avalanche Beacon

Ortovox F1 Focus Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

I absolutely love the F1. I've been using it for 2 years now and I don't expect to go digital anytime soon. This beacon, with a little practice, will give you a faster search time than almost anything else. I consistently have faster search times than my friends with digital/analog combos(perhaps with the exception of the M2)and especially faster than pure digital. This beacon is logical and simple to use, even with 2 burials. It lacks the lag time of the digitals as well, which means when your on your skis doing your initial search, you don't have to stop and wait for your beacon the catch up. There are few quirks about this beacon and no "special" tricks or techniques to master. To sum it up, its the simplest and most proven reliable beacon on the market.

Excellent beacon

Ortovox M2 Avalanche Beacon

Ortovox M2 Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2008

This beacon has all the simplicity and reliability of the F1 plus the added benefit of a more sensitive signal strength display and a distance readout. The dial adjust prompt is unnecessary but certainly doesn't hurt. This beacon shows you on a screen what the F1 tells you with sound. The only down fall of the beacon is the on/off switch and strap system which takes ungloved hands and some getting used to. The transmit/search switch is easy and fast which is what really counts. A great beacon and the only one with a faster search time than the F1.

One binding to rule them all

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2008

2 seasons of full time patrolling and hard skiing on 1 pair. These bindings have performed flawlessly since day one. The release is smooth and predictable but they hold solid when you need them to. Unlike the duke, you can go from ski to tour mode without having to remove your skis which saves time and is safer in certain rescue situations on hairy terrain. I will never patrol on another binding. Only complaint is the price.

Superb

Black Diamond Bod Harness

Black Diamond Bod Harness

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2008

Excellent harness. Unbeatable comfort to weight ratio. This harness is the best choice for mountaineering because its design allows you to put it on without having to step into it, very convenient when wearing crampons and bulky clothing. Also very comfortable to sit in on long rappels and hanging belays.

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 2, 2008

Arc'teryx is so close on this one the design and materials are top notch. By far the most comfortable long haul pack I have worn. The only complaint is the retarded water bottle holders. If your not carrying a water bottle (i.e. a bladder in the pack instead) they make the small pouches otherwise useless. The water bottle holder should be removable. Other than that, stellar pack.
