Marmot Mainline Jacket - Men's

November 17, 2009

The hood is designed to fit best over your head without a helmet. If you fit the hood to a helmet it ends up a compromise when you are not wearing one and doesn't work very well. Way too much volume. It should pull over most ski helmets, but that's not what it is sized for.

Marmot Crystalline Jacket - Women's

October 12, 2009

It's 1.25" shorter and a skosh slimmer fit but you shouldn't need to size up. Jackets are fit based on use and the Crystalline is more atheltically fit than the Precip but intended to fit the same body appropriately.

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's

September 30, 2009

Leadville is primarily Gore N2S and Gravity is a fleece backed stretch fabric called Quicksilver. Gravity is warmer due to fleece lining. Leadville will breath better because the N2S is designed to move moisture away from the skin. Gravity is both heavier and bulkier. That said, Gravity will be best if you want warmth and the Leadville will be best if you want light weight, breathable. Only other caveat is that the N2S fabric (found in main body) is windproof versus the Quiksilver which is wind resistant.

Marmot Nano Jacket - Men's

September 16, 2009

Nano is Gore Tex PacLite and Mica is Membrain Strata. Waterproofness, packability and wind resistance are essentially the same. The Nano wins in terms of breathability and durability and has more technical features like laser drilled pockets that double as core vents and a wire brimmed hood. The Mica is about an ounce lighter and has reflective hits for visibility.

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

August 10, 2009

The Fill Power of the Down on the new one is 800, the previous Ama Dablam was 650 so it's higher quality and the jacket is a little lighter. Quilt lines are also updated. New one is definitely nicer. Fit is similar.

Marmot Alpinist Bivy

May 21, 2009

won't need a tarp. the bivy is waterproof and uses a heavier 40d fabric on the floor. Weighs under a pound and is highly breathable. Great choice for going light on spring/summer ski tours.

Marmot Ion Windshirt - Women's

May 20, 2009

Great choice for wind resistance, light weight and price. It's water resistant, but not water proof. Steady rain will make the jacket stick to your skin. Marmot Crystalline is 7 oz, windproof and waterproof. It's a new fabric that's highly breathable and will work a lot better in rain than a wind shell. I've worn both on a bike and can't say one is more breathable than the other. I guess it depends on how much you plan on using it in the rain.

Might check out the Marmot DriClime Windshirt at 312 grams. Lighter and warmer than the Tempo because the Windshirt is windproof and the Tempo is wind resistant.

Marmot Tirol 25 Backpack - 1550cu in

May 20, 2009

It's more a day hiking pack than a cycling pack because of the profile and size. Fits close to your back which is nice on or off of the bike. If you carry a lot of gear cycling, use it for commuting, etc... it will work. A little big for short cross country rides with a tool, tube, pump and some water. More of an adventure cycling pack or commuting pack. Built in rain fly is great for wet rides or hikes. Great day pack for hiking.

Garmont Argon Alpine Touring Ski Boot - Men's

May 13, 2009

flex definitely has a more bottomless feel in the overlap boots than on tongue design like adrenalin. stiffness wise, argon and adrenalin are the same. sizing should be the same, but the internal volume is a little different. argon is not as boxy and fits more precise in the forefoot.

Marmot Alpinist X Jacket - Men's

May 13, 2009

I think it would fit you in the torso, but would be short in the arms. I'm 6'0 155 and I fit the mediums in marmot well, but sometimes could use a little more length in the sleeve. I bet it's too small.

stuff sack and a backpack

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

Really cool ultralight pack that doubles as a compression stuff sack for your sleeping bag. Stuff your sleeping bag in the Kompressor, throw it in your backpack and use the Kompressor for day hikes from camp. Or use the Kompressor as an ultralight day pack. Foam back panel turns into a nice seat at lunch. Gets more use than I thought. Take it to the gym or market on my bike, too.

God of Wind

Marmot Aeolos Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Marmot Aeolos Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

That's who Aeolos is. This tent is super sturdy and roomy for it's weight. Lots of head space and plenty long for me at 6'0 and plenty wide for 2 adults. Sleeves make set up easy for 1 person and the clips are easy to attach. Lots of mesh and fly vents you can access from inside the tent keep it cool. One big vestibule and a second storage space gives you room to keep your stuff by your door. Fly clips into place. Poles are light and strong. Great tent if you want one strong enough to take higher in the mountains when it might snow and light enough to carry on your own and fits 2 adults comfortably.

Best Ultralight Bag

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

I have about 6 sleeping bags and this is my favorite. I take it to the desert year round, spring/summer/fall trips in the mountains, hut trips in winter and in my car as an emergency bag in winter. Sleep comfortably at 30 and have used it on colder nights wearing clothes without trouble sleeping. I'm 6'0 and fit into the regular. Long would give a little more wiggle room and width but I like the smaller size and lighter weight of the regular. This bag has been stuffed and unstuffed countless times and still has tons of loft. Marmot is the only company that certifies fill power and the quality shows on the Helium. Full zip is key on an ultralight. Best ultralight bag out there.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

Great jacket for the money. Hood is adjustable and fits great. I'm 6'0 160 and the medium is the right size. Packs into chest pocket so easy to clip to a pack or bike seat. Big pockets and nice closures for waist and wrists. Super light and looks good. Plenty waterproof for rain storms. Throw it in the dryer on med heat for 20 minutes when wet to keep the water repellent finish working.

Bridgedale CoolMax Liner Sock - 2 Pack - Men's

May 8, 2009

I used to get heel blisters ski touring and started using the coolmax liners under Bridgedale Ski Ultra Light socks and it's work great. I think I was getting the blisters from my feet being wet. I haven't used the liners without a sock over it, but it works great as a liner and does keep the moisture off of my skin. No blisters since.

New Favorite Flips

Sole Sport Sandal - Men's

Sole Sport Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

These are great. Never had sandals with this much support before. Keep my feet relaxed after runs or bike rides. I'm a 10.0 and bought the same size. Fit is great because they mold while you wear them and they have a metatarsal support pad, deep heel and lots of arch support. Haven't found another sandal with the met pad and it's my favorite feature. Keeps your toes from gripping the sandal and slipping when you walk. No more flip flop sound. These aren't cheapo casual flips. You get the same support as a footbed and the comfort of a sandal. Awesome product.

Sole Regular Softec Footbed

Sole Regular Softec Footbed

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

Great footbeds. I have used SuperFeet and Down Unders in the past. Like the moldability and arch support of the Sole best. Also, softer material is more cush and comfortable. Just the right amount of volume for my AT Boots and running shoes. I use the Slim Fit in my Sidi's. Easy to mold in my toaster oven and trim to fit with kitchen shears. I wear a 10/10.5 and the Sole 9.5/10.0 is perfect.

great boot

Garmont Radium Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Garmont Radium Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2008

Lightest perfromance 4 buckle mountaineering boot I've tried on. Great fit. Tight around instep and heel. Liner is light and warm. Best when thermofit by bootfitter. Skiing performance is phenomenal. Skiing on Coombas with dynafit bindings and it's plenty stiff for a 100mm+ waisted alpine board. Bottomless feel to the flex. Walk mode easy to open and lots of mobility in the cuff. Full strides save steps and energy on the up.

Axon

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2007

Awesome fit and much more performance than any other Dynafit boot that I've skied. If you're looking to drive a big ski with a Dynafit set up, this is the way to go. Liner is stiffer than other Garmont's and still thermoformable and the zeppa is nice for grinding and adjusting your stance. The zeppa also adds a little cush and warmth. No other AT boot that I've seen has one. This boots brings Dynafit to a new level of performance.

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2007

Got my new Marmot Exum jacket and it rocks! Super light and soft fabric. I wore it in heavy rain the other day and the drops beaded right up. Bent the wire brim on the hood to stay dry all day. Nice and breathable and great fit. Great price, too. Lots cheaper than other Gore Tex Pro Shells.

The New Anti Piste

K2 Anti Piste Telemark Ski

K2 Anti Piste Telemark Ski

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2007

This is a completely different Anti Piste than last year. The rocker makes turns in powder or any choppy snow feel like you are on groomers. Super confident in the steep and deep. Quick and nimble on the hard stuff. Definitely good enough to get around on. You really have to try this one to believe it. A great ski for the rockies or wasatch.
