GREAT BASELAYER

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Oasis Crew - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Oasis Crew - Men's

I love this top. I used it mainly for multiday hiking trips for use at night but it also came in handy for those colder days of hiking. It retained its tight fitting shape and refused to stink even after being thoroughly soaked in sweat. The best thing was though that it felt so nice and and the long sleeves were actually long and didnt leave my wrists exposed. The only minor drawback with it is that it has started to pill on the back where a backpack rubs but this only affects appearance and not the ability to keep me warm. I am never going back to poly thermals.

EASY PURIFYING

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Rating for this product: 4 February 6, 2008

It may be hard to believe that stirring a UV light in some water will purify it and there really is no signs that it is doing its job but I must say that while i have used this pen i have never had an health issues from drinking water treated with this pen. It is very easy to use, light, compact and doesn't effect the taste of the water. I did however have an issue with it when it refused start. Instructions suggested drying it out and an hour or so in the sun seemed to fix the problem that never returned. You can also buy a filter/steripen bracket that screws into the top of a nalgene bottle that is very handy in water that has 'bits' in it.

EASY HYDRATION

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2008

Great way to stay hydrated when hiking. This is a great way to add to an existing backpack that doesn't have an hydration pocket or if you want to have it on the outside of the pack for easy access for filling. Insulated bag did a great job of keeping water cold. As already mentioned, some insulation for the tube would be good as it heats up when walking in the sun.

The North Face TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 Zip Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2008

I bought this fleece to take backpacking with me to be used as a mid layer below a waterproof shell when hiking or with a softshell for when it was really cold. It performed a treat. Also came in handy on its own when it was a bit chilly but too warm for the softshell. I liked it because it was very light, didn't take up much room and was well made.

Unbottle Hydration Pack

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack - 3L

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack - 3L

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2008

These types of hydration packs are great for keeping you hydrated on the trail. Much better than stopping, taking of your pack, getting out a bottle, putting the bottle back, putting the pack back on etc.
I have previously used a no-name variant which leaked from the mouth piece and from the bladder lid so upgraded to this well known brand. You really do get what you pay for. I didn't have any major leeks, only a few drips occasionally from the mouthpiece.
The insulated cover was great in keeping the cold river water cold during long periods even in the hot sun. It would be nice to have the tube insulated though as the first mouthful can get quite warm.
The only issue i had was the little plastic link that connects the lid to the bladder broke although has no effect on the operation of the camelbak.
