Platypus Shut Off Valve

Platypus Shut Off Valve

Rating for this product: 1 March 15, 2012

Pain in the Ass piece of equipment. It freezes, it breaks, it doesn't twist well. I hate this part of my hydration pack. Its the only piece I've had to replace in about 3 years though.

Black Diamond Bandit with Avalung Winter Pack - 690cu in

March 22, 2011

The Avalung is NOT removable. It is integrated into the pack. The mouth piece does stow away in the shoulder strap. You cannot use the lung from this pack as a stand alone piece.

Nice Glove

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Rating for this product: 4 January 14, 2011

I have had these for about a month now. I've taken them out in -10 Colorado back country brutal coldness and warmer sunny days. On the warm sunny days they can almost be too warm. On the super cold days they work quite well and keep my hands plenty warm. Occasionally my index finger will get cold on the really bad days, but you can wiggle it in with the other three fingers and with a little arm swinging to get the blood moving you are set. I dig these gloves. The "talon finger design" is sort of weird, it is the additional leather on the index and thumb that I mention in my initial review. As the glove has broken in that has gotten more manageable. These glove are great, they aren't as dexterous as a pair of Hestras, but they don't cost as much either.

I've used them in -10 frigid Colorado. They are great. Sometimes your index finger gets cold, but isn't too hard to put it in with your other three fingers and that warms it up pretty quick.

Jones Snowboards The Solution Snowboard

December 16, 2010

Shouldn't this be in with the other splitboards? It is currently categorized as an all mountain, not as a split board.

Killer

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 3 December 7, 2010

Padded, responsive, cushy, reliable. Hard to beat Burton bindings. You can adjust them many different ways so they will be even more responsive than they are right out of the box. Easy to adjust the strap length with out tools, the high back can be easily aligned with your back edge. There is cushioning under foot and the straps are nice and soft too. Burton buckles can't be beat for reliability.

After a month or so of riding these, they are too damn soft. Fucking limp and not very responsive. Not great if you are an agressive free rider looking for a binding that will respond quickly.

Buyer beware

Lib Technologies Voila C2BTX Split Snowboard

Lib Technologies Voila C2BTX Split Snowboard

Rating for this product: 2 December 7, 2010

Anyone buying this should know that you will have to drill holes in it to install the split kit. Holes for the tip clips, holes for the "Chinese hooks", binding insert holes, touring bracket holes, heel riser holes. This board is basically half way built. It is un-drilled like a set of skis because apparently Lib was too cheap to pay voile the licensing fee to use their splitboard pattern this year.

If you are a ski tech or know some, this board may work for you, if you aren't, expect to spend an extra couple hundred bucks to get this board up and running. (Skins $150, split kit $150, drilling holes and inserts $?)

Weird thumbs.

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Rating for this product: 3 December 6, 2010

First impressions, they are cut strangely. The thumbs have this weird nub where it looks like they didn't cut the leather right, or their hand model had a massive wart. The liner has the seams on the outside, so they look strange and aren't useful as a stand alone. I was able to transition my splitboard from ride to ski mode and back, so that speaks well for the dexterity. The gauntlet goes nearly half way up my arm, so that is a good thing. I'm looking forward to trying them out in the cold so I can report on the warmth level.

It definitely seems like a first run model. You would think that quality control would have nixed the weird looking thumbs though.

Lib Technologies Skate Banana BTX Snowboard - Assorted Bananas

September 3, 2010

159 might ride a bit short for you at 6'2 and 210#. Reverse camber makes the board easier to butter and float better in deep powder. I ride a 156 weighting in at 190 to 180 (depending on the season) and 5'8 for all mountain freestyle, so the board works for that type of riding, however, on chop and in moguls it can be a really rough ride as the skate banana is really really soft. If you think you will be doing more park/rail riding, the skate banana is a good ride though, and a 159 would probably work. If you are more interested in charging steeps and huckin cliffs you might want a longer stick.

Lib Technologies Skate Banana BTX Snowboard - Assorted Bananas

With a size 9 boot you don't need a wide. It will be slower edge to edge for you. Wide boards are generally made for guys with size 12 or larger boots.

New Balance Watches N2 Heart Rate Monitor

New Balance Watches N2 Heart Rate Monitor

Rating for this product: 2 July 7, 2010

This heart rate monitor will get you started, but if you are looking to use it as a training tool you will probably find it lacking. It does not have an average heart rate feature or multiple zones. The buttons are very sensitive, although you can lock them. The wrist band is very small also.

If you want to be able to check your heart rate while exercising, this will work, but if you want serious training data, look elsewhere.

Awesome

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 10, 2010

I've got two of these shirts from SAC. I use them for a base layer snowboarding, splitboard touring and mountain biking. These shirts are amazing. The merino is so great because you don't smell like a locker room the instant you start to sweat. You can wear this shirt all day biking or touring and go get a beer afterwords and not send everyone running from the bar.

The fit is tight- "athletic" I guess, so if you are worried about your beer gut showing, size up.

Very nice fabric, soft, stretchy, doesn't absorb stink like synthetics and warm yet breathable.

Solid

Hestra Softshell Short Glove

Hestra Softshell Short Glove

Rating for this product: 4 March 17, 2010

Theses are great gloves, warm, waterproof, stylish. The leash is awesome, and the leather palms feel super solid, also great dexterity. I can easily transition my splitboard from ski to ride mode while wearing these gloves.

Only complaints, cuff is designed go under the sleeves of your jacket rather than over, and the velcro section gets snow in it, would have made more sense to put it on top, rather than below.

Sweet shell

Outdoor Research Motto Softshell Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Motto Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 19, 2010

I haven't used this yet, but I'll answer questions I had. It is a shell. It is cut such that the back drops lower to cover your butt when you sit or squat. I purchased this jacket to use for backcountry snowboarding/splitboarding. My mountain hardware synchro jacket was what I did use, but it keep coming up and if I fell over or bent over to strap in, my butt got cold and snowy. this jacket looks like it will fix that. The front pockets aren't super large, but you could probably fit a glove in each. I'm 5'8 180 and the large fit well. Plenty of room for an avalanche beacon and a couple layers. The hood accomodates a helmet, but doesn't want to zip up all the way if your helmet is large (I have a RED Hi-Fi). It did zip all the way, but just got tight at the throat/chin area.

Voile Universal Splitboard Interface

January 13, 2010

Yes, as long as you are not using a custom built board/ do it yourself, which requires you drill holes to mount the hardware. If you are using it on a Burton S series or a Prior or Venture factory built split, you are good to go. The factory built boards have inserts just like a solid board (except a bit wider)which allow you to adjust your stance forward and back, and also flip flop from regular to goofy.

Now do yourself a favor and get on the waiting list for some Spark R&D bindings for your new splitboard. Have fun!

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

December 31, 2009

Depends on where you ride, steep and deep, go longer, park laps everyday, go shorter. I ride a skate banana and while they say your can size down, I think you may as well stick with your normal sized board.

Seriously though, if you are cruising groomers or you really like to ride fast and deep, you want to go with the longer stick for stability. If you ride park, or jib around and play a lot, go shorter.

Voile SD Mojo Split Snowboard

November 19, 2009

You can use your ride (or any other bindings) with this splitboard. They come with slider pucks and plates. These are plates that you attach your standard bindings to which then slide on and off of the board to allow you to switch from ride mode to tour and back. The way to go is with the Spark R&D fuse or ignitions. Check out splitboard.com for lots more info.
