Solid Vest

Marmot Guides Down Vest - Men's

Marmot Guides Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 24, 2009

This is a really well made vest with thoughtful details. The entrire collar lined as well as the chin guard. It has lined hand warmer pockets and an internal stuff pocket. I'm 6'2" 240lbs with a 46" chest and I bought the XL. The vest does have extra room (ie--too much) in the belly, but I have a feeling if I got the L it would be too short. Overall a really nice vest.

Kelty Coyote Backpack - 4750cu in

Kelty Coyote Backpack - 4750cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 21, 2009

Don't let the price of this pack fool you, it is top notch. It has an amazingly large torso range which is a great feature for folks with long torsos. It is highly adjustable all the way around, and is really easy to dial in a custom fit. The detachable lid is great for romps around base camp and it has plenty of storage capacity.

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

June 21, 2009

There is a pre-filter and I have seen guys wrap a bandana or coffee filter around the prefilter and pretty much filter water out of straight mud. Of course this decreases the cartridge life, but it will get you water when you need it.

Simply The Best

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 June 21, 2009

This filter works amazing. I just got back from a 3 day backpack on the Washington coast and the Hiker Pro filtered water for 3 of us flawlessly. One of my friends who always brings treatment tablets was begging for the clean tasting water from the filter. I have used several other filters including the MSR Waterworks, and this filter is SO much faster and easier to pump. I can pump 3 liters before the MSR gets going on 1. The adaptors fit my camelbak, regular nalgene, and narrow mouth nalgene equally well. A must for backcountry trips.

Oakley Straight Jacket Sunglasses

April 9, 2009

Livenletlive,
These lenses are replaceable. Here is Oakley's link for replacement lenses http://oakley.com/pd/6053 . I'm pretty sure that you can replace them yourself. I have a pair of gascans and have replaced them myself. As for Angus's incorrect review, you should checkmark his review as unhelpful, as many people just try to boost their ranking by answering questions when they do not really know the answer.

Kelty Soar Backpack - 5200 cu in

April 8, 2009

Emily,
This pack is considered unisex. Although in some cases it may be better to get a pack geared toward your gender, it is definitely not necessary. My wife has a Kelty pack and she loves it and has had it for years. If you're on a budget, I definately wouldn't worry about it. Hope this helps.

Therm-a-Rest Trekker Lounge Chair

Therm-a-Rest Trekker Lounge Chair

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2009

This chair is the way to go. I would have a hard time camping comfortably without it. I'm by no means an ultra-light minimalist, and consider this chair a must pack. I have the 25" version for my prolite 4 large and it is great. I used to fold my mattress in half and stuff it in a stuff sack, then put it in my pack. Now I just remove the back stays and roll it up and strap it to the top of my pack under the lid. Super comfy and way supportive. I'm 6'2" and 250 and it supports me no problem.

Solid Stove

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

This stove works really well and boils water extremely fast. It packs really compact and it weighs next to nothing. The heat is really adjustable so you can go from a slight simmer to full boil. I have had no problems with mine; however, camping partner also brought his on a 3 day backpacking trip last week and the ignitor quit working. Seems like a minor problem and easy fix, because one should always have a fire source with them anyhow.

These are great hiking shoes for my 5 year old. He loves having the same kind of shoe as dad and they keep his feet dry and comfy. I like not having to wrestle his feet into full boots, so these are perfect. I watched him walk along a felled tree that was wet and slippy and he had no problems.

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

I have the medium and have brought it all over the country. From 3 straight day road trips to multiple week camping trips. This pillow rules. It's actually amazingly comfortably and packs pretty small considering it's girth when unpacked. It's definately worth bringing if there is even a tiny amount of room to spare. I absolutely recommend this product.

The North Face Nuptse Boot - Boy's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

These boots are sweet! My 5 year-old wears these even when there isn't snow on the ground. He's worn them everyday for three weeks now and they haven't shown any signs of wear. They're super easy to get on and off which really helps the parents out. We have had snow on the ground for 1 1/2 weeks now and the boots have performed great. We just spent the day skiing yesterday and he wore them around the mountain with 18" of new snow on the ground and they kept his feet warm, cozy, and dry. I would definitely recommend these boots.

I bought this jacket in kiwi as an approach jacket and for pre and post ski trips. It is super warm and light. The new fabric is extremely light and strong. I'm 6'2" and 230 lbs. and the XL fits me perfectly. When you zip this jacket all the way up and cinch the bottom draw cord it's like walking around in your 0 degree sleeping bag, I love it. This knife is sweet. The OutBurst opening mechanism is really simple and nicely crafted. The blade is sharp right out of the box and the heft of the knife is good. The only thing I don't really like is the gold accents on the knife. However, cosmetics are not as important to me as function when buying a knife, so this one is a great choice.

DAKINE Tracker Jr Mitten - Kids'

DAKINE Tracker Jr Mitten - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2008

I bought these mittens for my 5 year old's ski lessons this year. I found out last year that one of the most important pieces of gear for the little ones are warm, waterproof gloves. Last year he did more playing and eating the snow than he did skiing so it was imperative for his enjoyment to have dry warm hands. These mitts fit the bill perfectly, and I don't have to try to fit each finger in their corresponding hole, which helps my patience level too! Love 'em.

Just like my young son, I think my dog feels empowered by carring his own weight. The adjustments are great but pay attention to the sizings. He is a compact dog and weighs about 60 lbs. and he has the medium, the adjustments are as tight as they can go on the top.

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

These are great sunglasses, I bought them for backpacking in Utah and they really reduced glare off of the rocks and desert varnish. They are a bit tight on my temples after a few hours and like another reviewer said, the don't perch on my head very well. I have a big head and face (7 5/8 hat size) and they look really great. However, they do scratch really easily. I always keep them in thier case and somehow they had a scratch after 3 months.

CamelBak Hellion Hydration Pack

CamelBak Hellion Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

I have used this pack all over, from skiing resorts to summer day trips in extremely hot weather. It does the job and then some. It has a perfect camera pocket on the waist-belt and carries skis diagonally. The only problem I have had is with the bite valve; it has a valve to shut the flow off at the bite bite valve and it comes out pretty easily creating a siphon that can get you all wet. It is just a small piece, and to lose it would be terrible in the backcountry.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2008

This jacket is great for rainy Washington days. It fits great over a softshell or other insulating layer for hiking and backpacking and packs really small (I think it will fit in a nalgene bottle). It is very thin and I thought it would be a great shell for wet Washington resort skiing, but I have a feeling if I snag it on a tree limb it would be toast. I opted for a Mountain Hardware Pinnacle Jacket for the Wet skiing weather here in the Cascades.
