Smith ODS2 - RX Adaptor

According to the description it looks like it will work but if not backcountry is great about returns. I would click the chat now button to verify with a sells rep before purchasing just to be sure.

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

February 7, 2012

The only cons I cink of are 1. price, and 2. The eVent membrane may not last as long as a stanard sack.

But the pros - Much more waterproof, more breathable material, and much more compressible because although water can't get in the air goes right through the bottom and allows excellent compression without air pockets etc.

So if your gear doesn't have to stay dry you could save a few dollars, but I would rather have the more versatile bag with the piece of mind that comes with knowing my gr will stay dry when it counts.

GoPro HD HERO2 Outdoor Edition

February 7, 2012

Yes the mounts are universal the "edition" just specifies which mounts are included. So motorsports will have mounts for a car etc. but you can always buy other mounts later.

Hestra Heli Glove

February 7, 2012

Sounds like you might want a slightly smaller glove. Your fingers shouldn't be smashed against the end but you don't want a bunch of space either. Most importantly the fit should be comfortable, and you should still have some measure of dexterity.

Mountain Hardwear Drystein Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

The Active Shell is going to be much closer to the Dry-Q Elite in performance as it is Gore's most breathable fabric. Also Gore mandates all Active Shell jackets to be 400gm's or less so an Active Shell jacket will be light. But the only breathability rating for Active Shell I've seen is that the RET is less than 3.

Mountain Hardwear Drystein Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

The Drystein is an alpine/mountaineering jacket. So the fit is likely to actually be smaller. However I own a Victorio which is also an alpine jacket and I find the XL to fit perfect. I'm 5'11" 215lbs for reference.
You might want to check out the Snowpocalypse jacket as well it is in the same line as the snowtastic and could be the ticket for you fit wise.

Decent rain jacket for the price

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 6, 2012

I picked up one of these for 40$ on clearance. That said for the price its a pretty good little jacket.
The fabric is good and the stitching etc. is all of great quality as I have come to expect from Mountain Hardwear.
After an extended period of time (over 1.5 hours) in heavy rain I did notice some wetting out of the fabric but only in the shoulders. This occurred faster when I had had something like a strap from a pack on the shoulder.
The breathability was decent, however with just a t-shirt on the interior did get somewhat clammy. The inside of the sleeve would then stick to my arms occasionally.
My biggest compliant is that after only a couple of months the interior of the jacket near the arm pits has become discolored. My jacket is green and the interior is white with the nut from the mountain hardwear logo printed all over it. Now that area is a nasty faded green color. I haven't contacted Mountain Hardwear yet, but I'm hoping they'll replace is as it seems that the interior Conduit Silk coating/laminate is wearing away in those areas as well.
Still if you can find it at a good price I would say you could do worse. But don't expect it to keep you as dry as say Neoshell, PacLite, event, DryQ Elite, etc.

Patagonia Ultralight Down Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

The site is listing Fennel as a last season color so my guess is your probably going to have to look elsewhere for it. Patagonia.com had a similar discount last time I checked.

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

The Foray is actually at 28K which is very close to eVENT with the exception of breathability. Also if you have a problem with leaking the jacket/pants are defective and Gore or OR will replace them. Because they are in fact guaranteed 100% waterproof remember :)

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

I would buy the cheaper of the two as they are very comparable. I haven't owned an eVent jacket so I can't comment on the performance but I can say the PacLite holds it's own against the newest DryQ Elite jacket I have with the exception of not being quite as breathable. However I paid more than double for the DryQ Elite.

Great PacLite shell for the price

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2012

I like I'm sure many others snatched this off SaC for 90$. This is my first PacLite jacket and I'm quite happy with it. I own 2 other Gore-Tex jackets and I can tell a difference in breathability without a doubt.
Also having the Gore-Tex lifetime guarantee is nice as I have known people to get jackets replaced/refunded several years after purchase with no hassle.
From what I understand Outdoor Research also has a very good warranty as well.
Onto the jacket, the material is fairly light I believe it's 40D. The jacket is very comfortable and an XL fit me perfectly (I'm 5'11" 215lbs).
The jacket is completely waterproof as you would expect from Gore-Tex. The breathability is good but not as good as the DryQ Elite jacket I own.
Also I found the inside of the jacket would occasionally stick to my arm when I was working hard.
The TorsoFlo venting is same as Mammut uses in it's Ulimate Hooded Sofshell jacket.
Meaning it can be worn like a poncho or just used a normal pit zip. The zippers are somewhat stiff but they also did not leak and stayed where I put them which is nice.
As previous reviewers said the DWR works great and I have yet to get the fabric to wet out.
The pockets although a little high are still very usable. I've read you can stuff the jacket into one of the interior pockets but I'm not sure how.
For 90$ the jacket is hard to beat if your looking for a light weight waterproof/breathable.

First Mammut Product Very Impressed

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2012

This is my first Mammut purchase (although not my first softshell) and I am extremely impressed. The Quality is top notch. The DWR has held up very well for me and it still beads up quite well even on the shoulders after wearing a pack with it frequently. The softshell is very soft and it's warm for what it is.
Although BackCountry lists the seams as taped they are not. And I'm not aware of a Windstopper softshell that is. In fact the retailer I picked mine up from (at 50% off) told me Gore does not like manufacturers to tape the seams on windstopper products as they don't guarantee the waterproof on them. Not sure how accurate that is but I thought I would pass it along. Still without seam tape I haven't gotten wet in it, and I have used it disc golfing in a fairly heavy downpour for 3+ hours while carrying a backpack. The fabric on the shoulders under the straps was wet towards the end but I was dry on the inside. Also I have yet to feel wind through the fabric even sticking my arm out the window at 80mph for example. So the laminate definitely does its job. My only gripes are minor 1. The two way zipper can be a pain line up when putting the jacket on, and 2. The side zippers (which allow you to unzip it up to the bicep like a poncho) don't have anything to keep them completely closed so they will open just barely. Like I said just a gripe nothing serious. The addition of the thumb loop is very nice to keep your hands somewhat warm/shielded. And the length of the arms is perfect so that even when taking advantage of the thumb loops the arms don't pull to tight or become uncomfortable.
Mammut has an excellent warranty and I have yet to see any reason I'll need it.
In closing I'll definitely be purchasing more Mammut products in future and if they do a significant revision of this jacket I'll buy another one.

Great Jacket with one exception

Mountain Hardwear Victorio Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Victorio Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2012

To start I purchased this jacket on SAC for 244.99. I also had the Trice purchased for 199.99 and canceled it in retrospect I wish I had kept it and tried it out. The reason being is I don't do a huge amount of things requiring the chest high napoleon pockets. Also I like to be able to put my hands in a jacket when cold etc. While this isn't a deal breaker and I understand the reasoning for not having pockets useful for that I still wish they were there. The Trice would have been fine for me had it also featured a two-way zipper in the front.
Ok moving on, the material is excellent and feels quite durable without being overly stiff or crinkly sounding. The jacket is also surprisingly light for the 70D fabric. I like the black color and have received several compliments on the jacket, but would have preferred the bright green/yellowish color Mtn Hardwear offers.
The DryQ Elite lives up to it's claims in both Waterproof and Breathability. I own 2 Gore-Tex jackets one is a 12 year old TNF EG Tech Jacket, and the other a newer Pro Shell from Sessions. I also own an OR Foray which is PacLite. None of the Gore-Text jackets are even close to the breathability. Plus the inner liner on the PacLite sticks to bear skin and does not feel as comfortable on the skin as the DryQ Elite.
The fit and finish of the jacket are excellent. I am 5'11" and 215lbs, and I found the XL to fit perfect. Although I have arms which are slightly longer then the average person.
The hood fits great and I like that the brim does not appear to be wire so I don't have to worry about it getting bent when packing it in pack etc. The adjustments are in the material for the jacket on each side of the face and the adjusters are large and therefore easy to use.
The zippers are fairly stiff as they are waterproof and sometimes require two hands to operate. I'm hoping that will go away with use but that's not a deal breaker for me either.
The length is good and it is a fairly long jacket which I personally like. If the Jovian was longer I probably would have gotten it (since I prefer the pocket configuration on it), but I do not regret the purchase.
I'm currently trying to find a good price on a neoshell jacket to compare the Victorio to so if anyone has a suggestion it would be appreciated and I will post the results as well.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 6, 2012

Tester - Windstopper is quite good at keeping the water out, although it is not waterproof. The DWR is going to be what causes the water to bead up like any other jacket. While the WindStopper membrane will leak eventually under severe conditions, this is one of the few Windstopper jackets with taped seams so you should be good in most conditions save a serious extended downpour etc. In which case a rain shell would be called for.

The North Face Kishtwar Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 5, 2012

Actually Cincy - now that new tech like neoshell etc is on the scene it is absolutely possible to have a softshell that is 100% waterproof and still breathable. As for layering I do agree with you there and think tester was just expecting something with a brushed lining like the products he mentioned. Funny in my opinion Polartec has basically made power shield pro almost useless with the introduction of neoshell.
