The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's
May 28, 2009
as long as you get an XXL, the khumbu will zip into your shell (if your shell has the inner zips) and it shouldn't be too tight. The khumbu is a 200 weight fleece, which is pretty standard as an insulating layer. You can go with a 100 (salathe) or 300 (denali) weight fleece depending on the amount of room you want if the 200 doesn't feel right.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's
May 28, 2009
The khumbu is not meant to be an outer layer. It is a mid-weight (200) insulating layer that is zip-in compatible with certain TNF shells. The redpoint series is better suited to be a stand-alone given the semi-windproof nylon over primaloft construction, but it is also meant to be an insulating layer under a shell. You cannot layer a khumbu into a redpoint or vice-versa.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's
May 28, 2009
The Pumori and Khumbu are cut pretty much exactly the same, and they are both excellent choices for a mid layer. They are both 200 weight and have internal goggle pockets, which I always prefer. I think the only difference is that the khumbu is TKA fleece, (TNF's in-house brand) and the pumori is Polartec. It also looks like this years' khumbu model has "monkey thumbs" which are awesome. If they have not upgraded the pumori in a similar fashion, I would recommend the khumbu

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
May 12, 2009
I like the red on gray... that's why I picked that color. If it's not your bag, then I would go with the sky blue. As for the material, this is still a hardshell, whereas powershield is a softshell. This will be much more waterproof than powershield, but not quite as waterproof as the event.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski
April 6, 2009
volkls are generally on the stiffer side of the spectrum and as such are more suited to freeride than freestyle. If you wear a pack or weigh a little bit more than average for your height, then the stiffness is negated somewhat. I think mantras are fine in the park unless you are talking about throwing huge airs. It all depends on just how aggressive you are skiing

Scott Punisher Alpine Ski
March 28, 2009
So -how are these sticks on the groomers, really? Some of the reviews seem kinda confusing and contradictory- some say: good at speed and on the bumps, others: they are not recommended for hard-pack -etc. As I live in New Mexico, I ski more on-piste than not. That said, I really love the pow and will chase storms whenever possible. I am not concerned about a lack of true powder performance as I already have some fatty's for that. When there aren't any freshies, my typical day is screaming down blues, bouncing around in the bumps, and darting between the trees. What I am looking for is a good everyday ski that will handle all of that when I am caught without my more specialized skis (I also have some short park/pipe skis for practicing switch and tricks). I am a bigger guy- 6'3", 225 pounds, and usually ride with a pack that can weigh up to 15 pounds. Obviously, I need a pretty stiff ski. Will these fit the bill? Please advise.

Salomon Z14 Ski Binding
March 28, 2009
yes, but they will be a little loose when you put the skis together to carry them. You may want to get some straps to hold them tight if you go with these. There are some better options... I would suggest the Salomon Z10s on this same page. They are 75 dollars less and have a width of 80mm underfoot- perfect for your skis. They only go up to a max din of 10, but that is probably plenty for you unless you are dropping huge cliffs or weigh well over 200 pounds.

The North Face Redpoint Hybrid Insulated Jacket - Men's
August 16, 2008
It depends on the activity that you will be doing while wearing the jacket. High activity means that you can get away with less insulation. New England winters are on the cold side, yes? I would recommend something from the 'insulated' line. I own a redpoint jacket and I love it. It is deceptively warm and extremely light weight. The redpoint is really more of a layering option in the extreme cold, though. If you want a stand-alone winter coat from TNF for the cold of a Boston winter, I would recommend the knuptse down jacket. As I stated earlier, it depends on the activity you are doing while wearing the jacket. The knuptse is by no means an exterior shell, and down it will become quite useless when wet. As always, a good stock of interchangeable layering pieces in a zip-in system makes for the best option in a variety of conditions.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's
August 11, 2008
Does the khumbu have internal goggle pockets like the pumori? The specs for both jackets lists only 2 hand pockets, but my pumori has the internal ones as well. It is a nice feature and if the khumbu doesn't have it, I would probably be better off with another pumori.
