The North Face Borealis Backpack - 1650cu in

January 6, 2012

I will look a little big. But it really depends on what you need the bag for. Do you need the space, then why be bothered if it looks a little too large on you? So if you haven't already thought of it, contemplate what you will be transporting and how often you will make use of all 1650cu. Hope it helps.

Smith I/O Replacement Goggle Lens

January 4, 2012

No. Go for a complete transparent/clear lens instead, preferably with an AR coating. There are many and thankfully, debunked myths of orange increasing night vision.

Any color will detract from the total amount/intensity of the light your eyes receive, which will make you see less. Which of course will reduce the amount of detail you see especially in the darker areas of your field of vision.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Women's

January 4, 2012

I would recommend Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip Neck on top of a good moisture wicking base layer.

If that is not enough to keep you warm, you could add the Arc'teryx Rho LTW on top. That is an incredibly warm layer combination, one that I use myself.

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Cushion Hiking Sock - Women's

January 4, 2012

While merino wool is always very good for warmth, these socks have thinner fabric on top for better breathing. Still they are fairly warm socks, but it really depends on what kind of usage you will make of these.

If you are planning to use them in cold weather you could use a thin sock underneath. If you are looking for something super warm, I'd recommend a heavy sock instead.

Probably thefind didn't update this site info. Very often when there is a sale for a jacket, only one jacket size will be on sale, say a XXL or XS. That price is then picked up by price harvesting sites. My guess is that there was a sale like this for the $315, it was sold and thefind haven't updated yet.

The North Face Arctic Down Parka - Women's

January 3, 2012

Well one reason is the materials involved and the larger amount of said materials. HyVent is a top material from North Face (breathable and water proof) and goose down always warrants a premium.

Then of course you will pay extra for a proven brand name. On top of that it's season for winter coats, so supply and demand will affect over all pricing as well.

If you want to find a good deal for a winter coat, I would recommend waiting until spring - summer. $300 for a warm sturdy long coat is not that bad, especially if it will last you several years of course. But I can not speak to the specific quality of this coat.

Thin, light and shielding perfection.

Arc'teryx Celeris Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Celeris Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2012

This is made for activity in windy mild to warm climates. I love running and hiking in this. The fit is true to size, which is not the case with many Arc'teryx products. I needed a size L for my 6'2 175lbs frame.

Obviously this wind breaker is not warm. It's not exactly a wind stopper either, but it does keep you shielded and hold on to a good amount of body heat.

This combined with the Phase SL makes for an awesome out door high output activity combo. Great to have that single pocket for a key, phone, mp3, cash etc.

Detailing is great. Seems and construction very good. Also not as noisy as other breakers I have owned. Definitely not quiet either!

Marmot Power Stretch Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

January 3, 2012

While I haven't tried this one. I would recommend a different base layer if you are looking for a warm form fitting layer made for people with long arms.

First of all, the Marmot is Polartec (Polartec Power Stretch (88% polyester, 12% elastane)). It seems a little pricey for a solution like this IMHO, regardless of the full zipper.

My recommendation would be the Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip-Neck Top. The Phasic SV material has better odor retention properties and it's warmer. Also I think your body type fits their styling better. Personally I would prefer not to have the full zipper as well, but that is a matter of taste.

Favorite sock in this class so far

Patagonia Midweight Merino Hiking Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2012

I have owned too many different socks in this category. These are my favorites. Perfect fit and materials. Finally a fabric that retains shape and do not get fluffy over time like most other alternatives. They are very warm and there is no sweat or odor retention with normal use.

The fit is perfect, with a tiny bit of room at size L (10-11 size shoe here).

A second skin

Arc'teryx Phase SL Zip Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2011

This is perfection for me. World class; lightness, breath-ability, moisture transport and has the least tendency to pick up odor of any garment I have worn.

With an ultra light cotton undershirt this makes a very warm combo for light output activity. Fabric is not windproof, so I use Celeris as a breaker with this for running.

Fabric stays new looking for years. Surface is nice and even and soft even after years of usage.

Only criticism is that it could have been tighter on the neck. Maybe my neck is slim or Arc'teryx was afraid to choke their customers with a tighter fit.

Do not hang this shirt wet on a hook. One of my shirts have a permanent depression/extrusion that does not go away when washed. I have not taken an iron to this.

Beautiful and functional, but with limitations.

Arc'teryx Phase SV Zip-Neck Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2011

This shirt makes a deceivingly warm layer. Breathes extremely well. Too warm for activity in mild weather. Zipper is the standard and a very nice option to have for ventilating.

Fit is fairly tight. I got a size M, because I wanted it very tight, as a second from skin base layer, for hours spend standing in cold and windy conditions. I'm 6'2 175 lbs and just fits, but it's skin tight.

This garment is very comfortable, soft and light. No itch and very low odor retention.

Stitching inside, as seen in the images I supplied, is not fantastic. Quick and uneven, does not suit Arc'teryx style. Still very nicely covered zipper on the inside of neck for added comfort.

I would give this 4.5 stars if possible. The lack of attention to detail on stitching inside, cost as star.

Vasque Juxt Hiking Shoe - Men's

Vasque Juxt Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2011

These shoes have a very narrow profile. So if your foot is wide be aware of this.

The materials and build is rather sturdy and good all around. This shoe is not made for heavy beatings for extended periods of time as it's rather light without getting into real light shoe territory. The blue is a little more saturated than what I see on this monitor.

Warm and well constructed

Outdoor Research Northback Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 26, 2011

These are the best heavy duty gloves I have ever owned. They are not only warm, windproof and waterproof, but very comfortable and breathe well. The construction is very sturdy and allows for good manipulation and dexterity. Quality seems very very good. Tie strings work real well. Medium is fairly tight on my hand, sizes may be on the small side.

I have yet to test them in double digit freezing temps (C). Will update this review when I have. Here is a picture of the inside materials.

Fragile socks for sliding

Thorlos Hiking Thick Cushion Thor-Lon Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 2 December 25, 2011

These socks are slippery on just about any surface. My feet slides around in them as well.

After just a few hours of usage the socks show clear signs of heavy wear. Fabric fibres coming off on heel and ball of the foot.

One pair arrived with multiple damage to the knitting.

The padding is nice, hence the two stars.

Great all round sock

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Medium Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 4 December 25, 2011

The form fitting cut of this sock is great. No sliding around either. It should be noted that they are on the tighter side comparatively speaking (a small fit); hugging your feet and ankles almost like a compression sock, which over time is not that great. My legs are very slim. I got size L for a 10.5.

The fabric surface does not retain very well, after two days the surface was fluffy. Image is taken after three days of light wear, no hiking or long walks!

Warm, light and good looking.

Arc'teryx Atom SV Insulated Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 25, 2011

This jacket is very warm and light. I use it for evening or night photography during winter over a few baselayers and with the Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV as a shell.

The design and aestethics speaks for itself, but it's hard to gauge the cut in the pictures. This is form fitting and should fit relatively tightly. I found a Medium size a perfect fit (6'2" 175 lbs, fairly wide on top).

Used open or half open with just a t-shirt in 40-50-60 Farenheit works real well for me too.

The "wind shield" in the collar closing up the space created between the neck and the hood is a brilliant detail. This is made of the same material as the cuffs.

I got the Nightshade which is a little darker in real life than in the provided pictures.

Best hoody, hands down.

Arc'teryx Fugitive Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 24, 2011

I have owned this for 3 years now and it's virtually impossible to tell despite the fact that it has been worn every other day at least for a few hours. It' s the piece of warm throw on garment I keep returning to for home use, casual walks, mid layer for night time photography etc.

It breathes very well. Does not pick up odors very easily. The material is soft and stretchy, and sturdy! Pockets with zippers work perfectly and the shape of the hood itself goes perfectly with Arc'teryx shells.

A short while after getting my first, I bought a second just to have another colour option. I have noticed from handling newer versions of this piece in stores, that the material is somewhat thicker than the first editions. So do not expect a super thin hoody. It is very warm though and deal with wind quite well.

Great all round activity wind breaker

Arc'teryx Celeris Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 24, 2011

I got this for my wife recently and as a result, I got one for myself! Wife fits a M perfectly at 6'. Her arms are very long so sleeves are a tad short, but nothing critical. The fit is not skin tight, nor saggy, nice and comfy with good movement.

Obviously this jacket is not warm and it's not a wind stopper either, but it does keep you shielded and hold on to a good amount of body heat.

Perfection in a shirt

Arc'teryx Phase SL Crew Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2011

This is one of my favorite shirts, be it for high output activity or casual living. It's a very thin fabric and breathe extremely well. Building up a sweat in this thing, one that sits in the garment, takes effort and when it happens, it dries in no time.

Best thing about it, apart from the pleasing aesthetics of the shirt, is that it deals with odor better than anything I have ever worn. My odor is not very intense so others might have a different experience.

I'm 6'2 175lbs, wide frame and the L is perfect. Tight but not skin tight. Basically the shirt cools you when warm and "warms" you when cold. I use it with a base layer most of the time, not next to skin unless I am wearing for high output activity.
