  • Stomping Grounds:

    The mountains. The real ones.
  • Bio:

I'm a climber, almost exclusively, started climbing when I was 3, first lead at 11, haven't really stopped since. I say almost because I tele a bit too, but really I've been dedicated to mostly pushing myself on sport routes for the last 2 years and 3 years of competitive bouldering before that. I know there are people that criticize sport climbers as lazy posers, and I say that if you want to make climbing into a spiritual purification process, be my guest. I do it because it's fun, and I think short approaches and light racks make it more so.

Notable areas that I've climbed at in the US include Red Rocks, City of Rocks, Smith Rock, Rifle, Independence Pass, the Flatirons, Cochise Stronghold, Owens River Gorge, Zion, Ouray, and some others that I can't think of right now. I've also climbed abroad a bit in Mallorca, Sardinia, the Verdon Gorge, and the Dolomites, among others.

I'm a diehard Coloradoan, which is to say I wear a down jacket with shorts and sandals in winter and get grouchy at overcast skies or drizzle. I'm always trying to find new areas to climb at and new routes to have fun on, and I try not to take anything too seriously.

Big Agnes Pine Island 4 Tent: 4-Person 3-Season

December 9, 2008

Two cots, complete with Thermarest center aisle, ample room to sit up, and still withstood a windy hailstorm at 9000 feet (Ouray, CO) without breaking a sweat about an hour after I took this .

Salomon B52 Dry WP Winter Boot - Men's

November 13, 2009

If you're NOT trying to fit them into toe clips, though, they'll work pretty well. Not as well as normal shoes, obviously, they're a bit cumbersome, but definitely the best option if you want to keep your feet warm and dry on a bike. I bought these for exactly the same reason (biking in CO) and they're about 1/4" wider than the shoes I normally ride with.

Voile 3-Pin Cable Telemark Binding

November 9, 2009

These are, no offense, extremely ghetto bindings. I personally have skied with G3s and found them decent, Bishops and Hammerheads and found them decent, but I cannot recommend the Black Diamond O2 higher. They are a fantastic binding, low maintenance, fantastic flex curve, the best on the market in my opinion. I'd get the Ridiculously Stiff cartridges because you're a big guy on a fairly stiff setup. The O1 is also the same binding, but with a touring option. If you don't need the touring option, they're too expensive. O2s though, definitely.

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant - Men's

November 2, 2009

I've been skiing in Colorado for the past six years, and what you say is true. I've seen 15-degree blizzards and 35-degree bluebird days on consecutive days. My strategy was to get the non-insulated Freedom pant from North Face, and then on hot days I wear no long underwear and keep the side vents open. On cold days, wear more insulation and keep the vents closed. My thought was that you can never wear less insulation than what's built into the pants, so I decided I wanted more freedom to regulate temperature.

Norrøna /29 Leather Belt

November 1, 2009

No guarantees, but Norrona is Swedish, so I'm guessing length in cm. So a 100 would be 39 inches long. If you have a 32 inch waist, add 6 inches of slack is 38, which is 96 cm so the 95 would work. I'd check with the Live Chat guys, but that makes sense in my head.

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

October 29, 2009

I demoed these in the 182 length last winter, and they were fantastic. I thought they'd be too much to handle, since I'm only 150 pounds and 5'9", but in the deep powder it absolutely wasn't an issue. One thing that Alexander mentioned is the turn radius. I really only used them on powder days, so when I get back on the groomers I just want to bomb back to the lift for another run, but they really don't turn on hard snow very well. In the deep stuff the rocker punches it through the turn quite well, but if you're on harder stuff, no such luck.

K2 Pontoon Alpine Ski

October 24, 2009

I'd go with the 169 again. It'll feel more familiar in tight situations since you already have 169s, and the Pontoon is so effing fat that you should have no issues sinking in powder, especially if you're a fast skier. That also means you'll be able to turn a bit better, since the 169s are lighter and easier to whip around.

Patagonia Speed Ascent Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Speed Ascent Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2009

No, it's not entirely waterproof, and it's a little on the heavy side, but it's a fantastic jacket. I got it in February of this year and skied in it down to about 10 degrees with just a wool shirt and a Patagonia R1 underneath and it was great. Breathed like a marathon runner on the long hikes and kept me warm in deep pow (regardless of the lack of skirt) and whiteout wind. The hood is big enough to fit over my Variant Brim helmet and still move fairly well, and the rest of the jacket moves really well in twisty jump turns and trees when you need flexibility. My only gripes are that the pockets have no insulation and that the hood blocks out sound TOO well. It's actually irritating when you're walking around town with friends and the hood up and you can't hear anything that's being said. Other than those minor gripes, I wear it whenever I can. Windproof, welded seams, fuzzy and warm inside, why not wear it?

They're really waterproof. They do have mesh panels, under which is a Gore-Tex membrane that keeps water out.

Backcountry.com Chalice Stainless Steel Bottle

September 8, 2009

You can, it's just that they're single-wall so if you fill it with hot liquid, the bottle itself will get very hot.

Arc'teryx X350a All-Around Climbing Harness

September 7, 2009

I've worn both the light, sporty varieties and the all-day varieties of BD's most recent line and Arc'teryx's hyperthin harnesses and I prefer the BD ones. They feel a little more substantial and I also found them more comfortable in hard falls and long hangs (consecutive hanging rappels for instance). I would say that if you're into all-day trad climbing, the Xenos isn't really the harness best suited to your needs though. That's more of an ice climbing harness, and has BD's ice screw clips on it for just such occasions. The Chaos is the best BD harness for all-day, trad-climbing trips, and I've been loving it for months now.

That's a placeholder for an upcoming color, so I can't say for sure, but I'd guess black. Like a raven.

The North Face Inlux Insulated Jacket - Women's

September 2, 2009

Whether it is form flattering will depend on your form. If you are actually 5' 0" and weigh 1000 pounds (and that's not just a typo), then there is very little that will flatter your form.

Foursquare Arroyo Jacket - Men's

September 1, 2009

It's 8K waterproof, which is fully waterproof but not as long-lasting as a higher rating. I wouldn't use it as a rain jacket, if that's what you're going for. For a rain shell, you want something more like 20K.

Metolius Stomp Crash Pad

August 31, 2009

No. From 32 feet your speed of impact is over 45 mph, so no matter what you fall on, the deceleration is going to hurt, and you'll almost certainly break something. Set aside the fact that it is incredibly difficult to even hit something this small from that height (picture jumping from a 3-story building into a jacuzzi), and you're still talking about an incredibly serious undertaking. Most boulderers have more than one pad for anything above about 15 feet. For highballs in the 30+ foot range, you're going to need more like a dozen pads, but I'd still advise against it. A friend of mine fell from 30 feet on to a pad and burst a vertebra in her back. It took about 18 months before she could toprope again after that, and she can't boulder ever again. So think long and hard before you venture that high without a rope of some sort.

The North Face Greenland Jacket - Women's

August 29, 2009

I assume by "it" you mean the fur trim on the hood. In which case it is fake. If by "it" you mean the jacket, it is real. And not just a picture. I'm not really sure what you're asking.
