  • Stomping Grounds:

    The mountains. The real ones.
  • Bio:

I'm a climber, almost exclusively, started climbing when I was 3, first lead at 11, haven't really stopped since. I say almost because I tele a bit too, but really I've been dedicated to mostly pushing myself on sport routes for the last 2 years and 3 years of competitive bouldering before that. I know there are people that criticize sport climbers as lazy posers, and I say that if you want to make climbing into a spiritual purification process, be my guest. I do it because it's fun, and I think short approaches and light racks make it more so.

Notable areas that I've climbed at in the US include Red Rocks, City of Rocks, Smith Rock, Rifle, Independence Pass, the Flatirons, Cochise Stronghold, Owens River Gorge, Zion, Ouray, and some others that I can't think of right now. I've also climbed abroad a bit in Mallorca, Sardinia, the Verdon Gorge, and the Dolomites, among others.

I'm a diehard Coloradoan, which is to say I wear a down jacket with shorts and sandals in winter and get grouchy at overcast skies or drizzle. I'm always trying to find new areas to climb at and new routes to have fun on, and I try not to take anything too seriously.

The benefit is that you don't have to keep buying AAA batteries, but there's no weight difference and I haven't noticed a difference in runtime either, so if you buy rechargeables it shouldn't make a difference.

Correct, no vestibule. A vestibule requires a double-wall setup, which adds a lot of weight, so in order to "simplify and add lightness," to quote Lotus' mantra, you don't get one.

Yakima BigStack Boat Rack

January 14, 2010

You're going to have to do two things. First of all, you need a roof rack. Call Yakima and they'll tell you exactly what you need for your make and model of car (which you'll need to provide). Second, decide whether you want to haul two kayaks or three. You say both in your question, and you need to decide. And for god's sake, try to write a legible, coherent question next time. Maybe in the form of a real sentence.

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

January 14, 2010

Noah Howell and Nick Devore both ski Black Diamond bindings, Jack. That should speak for them pretty damn well. Nick Devore teaches a class for big mountain tele in Chile with Kayo Ogilby, and they both ski BD. Jake Sakson won the Junior US Free-Skiing championships in Crested Butte at the ripe old age of 17 and then got 4th the next year, only to go on to place third with the highest scoring run of the competition behind Devore and Crossman (both BD skiers) in Alaska at the Worlds and first the next year at the Alpine Meadows Telemark Freeskiing Championships. Guess what Jake skis? Black Diamond. If it's good enough for the pros, it's good enough for everyone else. And I stand by what I said about lateral flex. It's never happened.

Scarpa Feroce Climbing Shoe

January 12, 2010

What the rep meant by that was that the Miura VS is the kind of shoe that your toes curl up in the end of and the Feroce isn't. You'd probably wear a longer shoe in the Feroce because your toes will be out straight. The most important thing is to try them on, so I'd do one of two things: one option is to order two or three pairs if you can front the money, then send the ones that don't fit back. I'd order a 41, 42, and maybe a 41.5. The other option is to find a store that carries them and try them on there, then order them here.

Dragon DXS Goggles w/ Extra Lens - Women's

January 8, 2010

Different colors provide different levels of contrast, color, and brightness in different conditions. I don't know Dragon's lenses very well, but for example if it was bright and sunny out you'd want a dark, reflective lens to make it easier on your eyes. In flat light, that would be too dark and you wouldn't be able to see any contours, so you'd want to have a pink or yellow tint to enhance contrast. Just a few examples.

That's the most positive response I've ever gotten. I'm actually so jaded that I thought you were being sarcastic at first. Given your new set of circumstances, it would seem that the protocol for gift certificates has changed since yours was issued. I'd get on Live Chat again, explain the situation again (including that you're now sure it's the right store), and maybe they can send you a new one. You'd think the old one would be on record somewhere so they could verify it. Otherwise, assuming you already tried entering the code where I told you and that didn't work, you may just have to cut your losses. Hope there wasn't too much money on the certificate (and that you can actually get to it somehow), and good luck!

Big Agnes Pine Island 4 Tent: 4-Person 3-Season

January 3, 2010

That's incredibly optimistic, Darrell. First of all, for a tent to big enough for a jolly giant like yourself to stand up in, it's going to have a ton of material that will only make it heavier. It will also be far more susceptible to wind. I had a Kelty Green River 4 that was tall enough, but useless in any kind of wind and heavy enough to strain muscles (I wrote a review on it if you want more info). The good news is that the height is the only part of your request that I don't think you're going to reconcile. This tent is light enough to split for backpacking and still huge enough to be a great car camping tent (see the photos). As far as I can tell, the Black Diamond Guiding Light is the only lighter 4-man, and it has no vestibule and is far less luxurious, in addition to being $200 more and a single wall (and thus unable to be split between hikers). You can tell by my review that I adore this tent, but I honestly and objectively don't think you're going to find a better all-purpose 4-man.

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

December 30, 2009

You don't need risers unless you're carving really REALLY hard, most likely racing. I've been racing without risers for 5 years and never booted out once, and the fact that you're buying a binding with a free pivot means you probably aren't looking at carving much with them. I think risers are totally unnecessary.

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 29, 2009

For someone with so much to say, you're pretty damn clueless about what you're saying. First of all, this wasn't selected by "buyers" or rebranded from a Chinese product. Stoic is Backcountry.com's in-house company, and all their products are designed by BC.com employees. As far as the color choices, this black/lime combination is fairly tame compared to the selection on the market today. Bright colors are making a comeback, and I (like many) think they look good. It's unfortunate for you that not all outdoor enthusiasts want to limit their color selection to brown, navy and grey, but if color is a bigger priority for you than a fantastically designed and constructed piece of gear, I suggest you shop at L.L. Bean.

Backcountry.com Dawn Patrol Vaccuum Coffee Tumbler - 3-Pack

December 10, 2009

I've been using it a fair bit on the mountain, and I've loved it. A fairly typical experience is to pour teat at around 7 am, leave it sealed (never had a problem with leaking) in my inside jacket pocket and take it out on the lift (maybe 5 times in a day, it doesn't hold much), and it stays hot enough to have to sip until easily 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It would probably cool off faster in a backpack than in a jacket, but if it's packed in it'll still be relatively well insulated. Honestly, I would count on it staying warm for 3 hours even if you filled it with boiling water and left sealed outside in the snow.

They wil get soaked very quickly, but they'll dry quickly too. If it's going to be cold and wet, I'd recommend something waterproof, otherwise these are probably fine.

Spyder Vito Jacket - Men's

December 10, 2009

The hood is removable, the jacket is not fleece lined, and it is warm. I wouldn't wear it by itself when skiing necessarily (depends how easily you get cold), but for walking around town it should be great.

Holy Crap

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2009

So, this summer I crashed my car, which means riding my bike 3 miles to school each way, 4 days a week. This was not a problem until it got booger-freezingly cold (I live in Boulder and it's been single digits for a week now), so I wore my Patagonia Speed Ascent. It got colder and I decided to wear a Patagonia R2 under the Speed Ascent. Colder still and I switched to a Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded jacket (huge puffy), then the R2 under THAT. Then this jacket came today. It is unbelievably warm. I am always hesitant to trust such thin synthetic insulation, but this is genuinely amazing. I wore it over a t-shirt and was toasty warm even though it's currently -13F with the wind chill. It's not restrictive at all and the quilted interior (which I also was not previously a fan of) slides over anything you're wearing underneath; sleeve wedgies are mercifully avoided. The hood is snuggable-downable also, so when you turn your head to see oncoming traffic the hood stays off your eyes and you can change lanes without becoming the unsightly stain on the grill of someone's Suburban. There's a media pocket for your Gettin'-My-Stoke-On playlist, a little sleeve pocket on the left forearm that I use for my house key because the pocket's shallow enough to get the key out even with massive gloves on, a large chest pocket and two side pockets line with joyously soft fleece that gently consoles my shredded climber fingers. I will be very sad when spring comes and I can't wear it anymore.

I was told that this jacket is the brainchild of a man named Bill from the BC.com mothership. Bill, you have created a masterpiece. The world thanks you.

Kamik Kicker Boot - Little Boys'

December 9, 2009

The return policy is unlimited in the most literal sense of the word. You can order two (or three) pairs and when they get there, try them all on, go play in the snow, take a hike in them, whatever it takes to decide what the best size is, and then send the other ones back.

Norrøna Lyngen Down 750 Jacket - Women's

December 8, 2009

It depends what you mean by "worth it." Norrøna makes exceptionally high-quality gear, solidly constructed in Norway and using all the latest and greates materials, so this jacket will probably last you for years. That said, you could probably find one just as warm for less money. The choice is yours.

Oakley Ambush Goggles

December 8, 2009

The Fire lens is very heavily tinted, so that won't work. The Persimmon is also tinted, but not as darkly, and the Black Iridium is colorless, but darker. It's gray, really. Oakley does make a clear lens for this goggle, but it doesn't come with since it's kind of specialized.

G3 Targa T/9 elle Telemark Ski Binding - Women's

December 7, 2009

The K2 inserts on the skis (which I'm assuming yours have) line up with several brands of binding, G3 included. Once you decide where to mount, it's just a matter or a small Allen wrench and about 30 minutes assembly. Easiest thing in the world.

Isis Cloud Dust Rain Coat - Women's

December 7, 2009

There is no lining or insulation. It is windproof and waterproof, but you'll need to layer it with something to actually keep you warm.

Black Diamond QuickWire Quickpack Quickdraws

December 7, 2009

I'm with Lyric. The guy in the gym was just trying to impress you with a "this isn't a joke man, you could die out there" demonstration that was completely irrelevant to the question. These are great draws.
