  • Stomping Grounds:

    The mountains. The real ones.
  • Bio:

I'm a climber, almost exclusively, started climbing when I was 3, first lead at 11, haven't really stopped since. I say almost because I tele a bit too, but really I've been dedicated to mostly pushing myself on sport routes for the last 2 years and 3 years of competitive bouldering before that. I know there are people that criticize sport climbers as lazy posers, and I say that if you want to make climbing into a spiritual purification process, be my guest. I do it because it's fun, and I think short approaches and light racks make it more so.

Notable areas that I've climbed at in the US include Red Rocks, City of Rocks, Smith Rock, Rifle, Independence Pass, the Flatirons, Cochise Stronghold, Owens River Gorge, Zion, Ouray, and some others that I can't think of right now. I've also climbed abroad a bit in Mallorca, Sardinia, the Verdon Gorge, and the Dolomites, among others.

I'm a diehard Coloradoan, which is to say I wear a down jacket with shorts and sandals in winter and get grouchy at overcast skies or drizzle. I'm always trying to find new areas to climb at and new routes to have fun on, and I try not to take anything too seriously.

If the Sub Zero was too short, definitely size up on this one. It's a much more trim fit. I've owned Mediums in both and there is a huge difference in sizing, since the Sub Zero is supposed to be a burly jacket and this is more of a down sweater. So yeah, the Phantom is a short fit.

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

December 15, 2009

I'm pretty sure this is what you're looking for. Basically, the way these work is that they transmit a signal at all times, and if an avalanche goes off and someone gets buried, the people who WEREN'T buried switch their beacons from transmit to receive. This will definitely work, but really anything that calls itself an avalanche beacon is also a tracker.

There is no older version, this is the first year that Stoic has existed. I know it sounds stupid, but I'd check again for your interior pocket. It's on the right side, it's relatively small, and it's kind of low profile. If it actually doesn't have one, then return it.

Backcountry.com Dawn Patrol Vaccuum Coffee Tumbler - 3-Pack

December 10, 2009

I've been using it a fair bit on the mountain, and I've loved it. A fairly typical experience is to pour teat at around 7 am, leave it sealed (never had a problem with leaking) in my inside jacket pocket and take it out on the lift (maybe 5 times in a day, it doesn't hold much), and it stays hot enough to have to sip until easily 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It would probably cool off faster in a backpack than in a jacket, but if it's packed in it'll still be relatively well insulated. Honestly, I would count on it staying warm for 3 hours even if you filled it with boiling water and left sealed outside in the snow.

Holy Crap

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2009

So, this summer I crashed my car, which means riding my bike 3 miles to school each way, 4 days a week. This was not a problem until it got booger-freezingly cold (I live in Boulder and it's been single digits for a week now), so I wore my Patagonia Speed Ascent. It got colder and I decided to wear a Patagonia R2 under the Speed Ascent. Colder still and I switched to a Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded jacket (huge puffy), then the R2 under THAT. Then this jacket came today. It is unbelievably warm. I am always hesitant to trust such thin synthetic insulation, but this is genuinely amazing. I wore it over a t-shirt and was toasty warm even though it's currently -13F with the wind chill. It's not restrictive at all and the quilted interior (which I also was not previously a fan of) slides over anything you're wearing underneath; sleeve wedgies are mercifully avoided. The hood is snuggable-downable also, so when you turn your head to see oncoming traffic the hood stays off your eyes and you can change lanes without becoming the unsightly stain on the grill of someone's Suburban. There's a media pocket for your Gettin'-My-Stoke-On playlist, a little sleeve pocket on the left forearm that I use for my house key because the pocket's shallow enough to get the key out even with massive gloves on, a large chest pocket and two side pockets line with joyously soft fleece that gently consoles my shredded climber fingers. I will be very sad when spring comes and I can't wear it anymore.

I was told that this jacket is the brainchild of a man named Bill from the BC.com mothership. Bill, you have created a masterpiece. The world thanks you.

DAKINE Deluxe Tune Tuning Kit

December 7, 2009

You really have nothing to do and an extremely stunted grasp of waxing. Allow me to walk you through this.
Case - to hold everything in
Edge Tuner - pretty self explanatory, but you seem like a bit of a mouth breather, so listen up: it's for tuning edges
10 in. file - for smoothing off the rougher scratches in the edges before taking the edge tuner to them
Cleaning brush - for cleaning out a core shot and then cleaning off the little bits of P-tex when you fix a core shot so they don't get waxed in
Metal Scraper - for slicing down the P-tex so it's flush with the ski
Wax Scraper - for shaving off excess wax after the iron goes over it
Pocket stone - more detailed edge work
All-temp wax - the entire reason to wax in the first place
Scotchbrite pad - often overlooked, used to work the wax into every contour of the base and smooth it in one direction
Tuning tips pamphlet - for people like yourself who seem to think that waxing means melt some on, iron it, and go.

Black Diamond Covert Winter Pack - 1343-1953cu in

December 6, 2009

I'm not sure what you're talking about, Lyric. I guess if you were trying to integrate the Avalung into the pack directly, it would be a problem, but that would be stupid. The Avalung on its own is intended to be worn close to the body, even under your outer shell of clothing, and any pack can be worn over it. The Avalung-equipped packs run the breathing tube up through the shoulder strap, so it wouldn't work the same way to try to combine them. In addition, an Avalung goes for $130 retail, a Covert for $120, and a Covert Avalung for $220, so you're saving 30 bucks getting the integrated pack. If you're not going to do that, though, I'd just wear the Avalung like it's supposed to be worn with a pack over it. That's how it was intended to be used anyway.

Canada Goose Expedition Parka - Men's

December 1, 2009

Turn your goddamn caps lock off, it makes you sound like a toddler. The answer is no. This jacket is designed to be used in true extreme conditions, and that's "extreme" by Antarctic standards, not California standards. The reason they used real fur is that in temps as cold as this jacket is intended to be used in, synthetic fake fur will shatter. My point is that if you're ever in a situation where you actually need this jacket (which is highly unlikely), you'd be suicidal to take the fur off the hood. It's keeping your brain from freezing, so it doesn't come off.

The North Face Transit Down Jacket - Women's

December 1, 2009

The fabric is windproof, but it appears to be stitched through rather than baffled so there might be cold spots at the seams where the insulation is thinner. Mountain Hardwear makes a coat called the Downtown (just put "MHW1259" in the search box) that's very similar and a bit warmer, plus the hood is deeper and it's got a removable faux fur trim to keep the wind off your face. It's only about $20 more, has a higher fill count, more pockets, and is a little longer too, so unless you're fiercely loyal to TNF as a brand, I'd suggest looking pretty hard at that. Picture of it on the left.

Patagonia Snow Patrol Snow Suit - Infants'

November 30, 2009

I'm not going to copy this on to all your questions, because you've already cluttered the page enough.

You have clearly no grasp of how this Q&A system works. It is not a live chat, it does not happen in real time, and there is no one waiting for you to ask questions. If you want all that, click the Live Chat button in the upper right corner of the page. It's white and says "CHAT NOW" in white letters. These questions simply get posted on the page, and someone who knows the answer may or may not stumble across it. It could be within minutes, or it might never get answered. Some of us who answer questions (other Backcountry.com users such as yourself) are more attentive than others, but again, there are no guarantees.

As to your incessantly repeated question, the easiest way to check if a given color/size is in stock is to click on the pulldown menu just to the right of the photo labeled "Select Options" and see if it's on the list. The inventory is updated in real time, so if it's on the list, it's in stock. As you can see in about 5 seconds by clicking on that menu, the 3T IS available in Sea Pink. Because it's on the list, you can rest assured that it's in the warehouse.

Next time, have a little patience or, if you don't have time, get on Live Chat.

The Wetsand, Iced Lilac, and Natural Grey are all still in stock in size 6. You clearly have made absolutely no effort to determine that for yourself. All the available sizes and colors are in the "Select Options" pulldown menu, so if clicking the mouse isn't too taxing, you can look there.

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

November 25, 2009

You can get the white bindings and then put whatever brakes you want on them, though you might have to buy them separately. It's easy to swap brakes for fat skis.

Black Diamond Mondo Crash Pad

November 25, 2009

I say go for it. To address knanier's point, I REALLY hope you're not worried about getting your crashpad dirty. Assuming you know what it's for, that should not be a concern. Do strap it down hard, though.

KEEN Newport Sandal - Youth

November 25, 2009

None of these has a mesh top, and only the Navy is still in stock in size 6. If you're actually looking for mesh and not just the gaps in the leather, there are none. Not a single one. That is not a feature of this shoe, regardless of size or color.

Stoic Luft Down Insulated Sweater - Women's

November 25, 2009

Nice to see some genuine scientific curiosity, even if this isn't really the venue you'd expect it in. The answer is no. Heat is lost from your body in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is through direct contact with something cold, like holding an ice cube, but since there's no air to touch, that won't be a problem. Convection is when air currents pull warm air away from you and replace it with cold air, which then gets you cold via conduction. This is how down jackets work; they make a pocket of warm air around you and keep it from being circulated away. Again, if there's no air, that won't make a difference either. Radiation is heat leaving your body via infrared light, which is created wherever there is heat. Space blankets work by reflecting that back at your body, so they don't need any insulation. That's also how spacesuits work. Down jackets, unfortunately, won't contain radiated heat, so to (finally) answer your question, if you were to wear this jacket on the moon, you would be as good as naked.

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 24, 2009

I think that's a misprint. The OTHER Stoic softshell has an MP3 pocket, they must have gotten the tags mixed up.

Smith Variant Brim Helmet

November 23, 2009

I've got this helmet and the brim hasn't been a problem. It's a little inconvenient, but not really an issue. It's just a little tricky to keep them balanced on the brim.

Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad - Mummy

Yes. Convection currents will make this a very poor-performing cold weather pad. BA makes some similar pads with thinsulate lining that are excellent in the cold.

Salomon B52 Dry WP Winter Boot - Men's

November 13, 2009

If you're NOT trying to fit them into toe clips, though, they'll work pretty well. Not as well as normal shoes, obviously, they're a bit cumbersome, but definitely the best option if you want to keep your feet warm and dry on a bike. I bought these for exactly the same reason (biking in CO) and they're about 1/4" wider than the shoes I normally ride with.
