Mountain Hardwear Windstopper Insulated Jacket - Men's

March 14, 2008

I have a Mt Hardwear Offwidth in medium. I'm 5'10" 155 and the fit is perfect everywhere except in the arms which seem short. I thought about going a size up to see if the arms would be longer but then worried the jacket would be too bulky and baggy around the torso. Is this sizing trend true of the windstopper insulated jacket too?

Very Good Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Primaloft Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Offwidth Primaloft Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 8, 2007

Great quality, functionality and warmth. Breathable, water and wind resistant and the Primaloft makes it a warm jacket. The materials appear to be high quality. Seams are clean and the jacket feels solid. I agree with some of the reviewers that the jacket is not the most stylish; however, it's made for functionality and serves that purpose well. My only complaint is the jacket is cut a little short, however, I believe this is to accommodate a harness for climbing.

Warm Jacket but more Stylish than Functional

The North Face Colossus Jacket - Men's

The North Face Colossus Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 8, 2007

With 200grm of Primaloft, this is a warm jacket. However, for such a warm jacket, there are no pit zips for quick cool downs during extreme activities. Additionally, though this jacket is technically a soft-shell, the material is not the stretchy and durable material typical of most soft-shells. It is almost similar to a nylon shell with very little stretching properties. I returned the jacket for a MHW Offwidth with Primaloft and I'm very satisfied.

Lightweight, comfortable fit and don't fog. What more could you ask for when on a day long (or longer) ski trip.

Ultimate Base Layer

SmartWool Midweight Crew - Men's

SmartWool Midweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 8, 2007

Smartwool has made the perfect base layer. Marino Wool wicks moisture, keeps you warm when wet and is soft to the skin. Additionally, hollow crevasses in the fibers trap air, which is then warmed by your own body heat. As a result, the fabric retains heat very well. I've tried various synthetic materials for base layering and have found they aren't as efficient as wool. It would make sense however that cold weather clothing utilizing the fibers used in nature to keep animals warm would prove most effective.

Good Casual Jacket

Columbia Castle Mountain Softshell Jacket - Men's

Columbia Castle Mountain Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 24, 2007

Good casual jacket. Appearance and style are top notch however materials and quality are not the best for real extreme conditions or activities. Sizes also run a little large. Bottom-line, this jacket is better suited for a chilly night out on the town than a blustery day on the slopes.
