Decreasing Quality

Merrell Chameleon Evo GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's

Merrell Chameleon Evo GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 27, 2009

Wolverine's purchase of Merrell is starting to show in it's quality. I bought a pair of the Cameleon Evo GTX XCR's and was greatly disappointed with the cheapening material's that they are using! It is true the shoe is much lighter than ealier Gore-tex models they have had, but that is about it for pros. This was the first time I ordered a pair of Merrel shoes and they were NOT 'true to size' order at least a half-size bigger. (Consequently, I ordered a different, new model Merrell, and I experienced the same problem.)
Also, the Vibram Outsole on the shoe is not near as beefy (or properly designed for loose ground conditions. The second pair I got held up well in firm ground/soil conditions, but under sandy-gravel mix on top of rock...the shoe constantly shifted.
Lastly, I do NOT recommend this for any mountainous backpacking--of any weight-load on your back, there is no support for your ankle's, and with weight-loads that occasionally shift due to balance and uneven terrain--I recommend some Merrell's older style of hiking boots, or go with Salomon, Danner, or La Sportiva.

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

February 20, 2009

I'm looking for a single-coat (not 3-in-1) that has both water/moisture proofing and thinsulate/comparable insulation built-in. Does the Mountain Hardwear Exposure Parka II have insulation? If not, what kind of coat should I be looking for??

Good Rain Coat

Columbia Thunderstorm Jacket - Men's

Columbia Thunderstorm Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2008

I got my jacket and got to wear it in light rain the other day, weather was about 72F outside. Good water shedding ability so far. Breathability is good, but probably not as good as gore-tex. The only reason I gave four stars was that this jacket, while not heavy, has some noticeable weight to it, also, I ordered a large, and it is quite 'large', but that is alright for me, as I plan to use it when camping or backpacking in cooler weather, and it will just slide over existing layers. I got this jacket for approximately $60, for the money it's pretty good. Only ll Beans jacket comes as close in price and performance. I'll post more, as I put it through the rigors

Great outdoor shoe

Merrell Chameleon II Stretch Hiking Shoe - Men's

Merrell Chameleon II Stretch Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 24, 2007

This is a great shoe, but for fear of 'over-pumping' a product, there are a couple minor issues listed.
First, if you are backpacking, you are better off getting a really good hiking boot, and if you are gonna be where there is rain or rivers, you will want a shoe with Gore-Tex. This is a comfortable shoe for "light" hiking or trail walking, but with even a medium load pack, after 7 miles, my feet were aching. There is not enough insole cushioning for the shoe--and these shoes were broken-in. The shoe claims to ventilate, but I found them quite warm in the warmer weather.
The shoes did provide adequate support, and feel solid on the ground. So far I'm enjoying them as regular about town casual shoes.
