Arc'teryx Tau

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 September 21, 2010

This garment gets a two star rating due to price and wicking. I have worn mine on three different outings, and this is something you wear when you are walking from pub to car on a cool, slightly breezy evening. You don't want to wear it if you are going to sweat. Looks good though.

I most recently wore the garment in 15-18mph wind, 45 degrees, with fairly high exertion level, climbing and walking up steep grades. I was wearing a lightweight wicking top underneath. The Tau was completely soaked with sweat, the fleece collecting water like a sponge. It didn't do a very good job keeping the wind out either. I was cold and very wet. When I got back to my rig, I turned the Tau inside out, and hung it on a mirror to dry. One hour later, it was still wet. In my book the Tau gets thumbs down. This is an expensive piece of gear, and doesn't cut the mustard.

Arcteryx Tau

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Tau Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 10, 2010

Wow, this has been a lot of work to write this review, kicked off, comments flying into cyberspace.
This is a fairly good piece of gear. Well made, nice lining. I got the XXL, am 6'5", 275 lbs. It turns wind better than an ordinary fleece, but I found it to leak air. Was out yesterday at 42 degrees, face into a steady 20MPH with gusts to 30MPH. Leaked cold air pretty good on the gusts, and while better at the consistent wind, still leaked cold air. I was wearing a thin poly-pro as a base layer. I put on a not so windproof garment over the Tau, and it still leaked cold air onto my torso. If I was to wear it in colder temps with wind, I would absolutely have a quality windproof over it, as well as a heavier base layer. I have a Sniper also, and the Sniper is more wind resistant than the Tau. I thought the Tau would do a better job turning the wind than it did, so I am going to say it is not worth it's price. It is an expensive piece of gear not to live up to what it is touted to do.

alpha SL rain pant

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 21, 2009

These are great light weight rain pants. They breathe pretty well, and do a great job of keeping you dry, but they are more of a trail pant. I shredded mine bushwhacking, they now leak like a sieve, and that hurts at $200 a pair. I am 6' 5", 40" waist, weigh 275 lbs, and the knees are not cut right, considerable binding when going uphill.

Typical Arc'teryx quality seams, and overall finish, but the waist drawstring adjustment slide is completely bogus. The designer must have thought it would be cute to make it small, and hard to work with numb fingers. They lose two stars for that, and the price.
