Light and functional axe for general mountaineering, not suitable for technical ice climbing

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 October 4, 2004

My wife, my son and I used the Raven Ice Axe in the Alps on gentle to moderate ice slopes and moderate to steep snow slopes. This axe is very light, which helps when every ounce counts. The shape of the head makes holding the axe in the self-arrest position much more natural and less tiresome. In my opinion, this tool is not suitable for technical ice climbing. We tried it on steep ice slopes for practice and discovered that the shaft is much too slippery for any serious work.

Warm, but not practical for mountaineering

The North Face Himalayan Mitten

The North Face Himalayan Mitten

Rating for this product: 4 October 4, 2004

The warmest mittens I ever had, but dexterity is severely limited. I chose to substitute them with another pair of gloves for mountaineering, but I keep the Himalayan Mitts for other purposes.

Reliable crampons for alpine mountaineering

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2004

My wife, my son and I used these crampons for ice-climbing and alpine mountaineering. They are easy to put on even in extreme cold (single digits Fahrenheit); they stay on securely. We all used them with anti-balling inserts, which make a world of difference on alpine snow.

From hiking to alpine mountaineering - thumbs up

Salomon SM Expert Mountaineering Boot - Women's

Salomon SM Expert Mountaineering Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2004

I used my Salomon Expert Hiking Boots extensively for winter hiking in the Northern section of the Appalachian Mountains, ice climbing in the Adirondacks and mountaineering in the Alps. My feet are generally susceptible to blisters, but I had no trouble with this pair. Only in the Alps after prolonged use of crampons I developed "hot spots" in the back of my feet. Some athletic tape took care of the situation, so no blisters developed.
I must note superior traction that these boots provide on various types of rock or moraine debris. I wore these boots with Black Diamond Sabretooth Step-In Crampons.
