2005 model

The North Face Vector 22 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2007

I have the 2005 model. The main difference is that the door is located on the wide size. In my opinion this is a major advantage as it gives you a bigger vestibule and it is easier to get in and out. I really like my Vector 22. It is very roomy for a 2 man tent. Maybe a bit short if you are over 6'4", but it can comfortably sleep 2 men. The fly has been very water resistant. I have had to reseal the seams along the door twice (to be expected with use). The tent packs down pretty small and is really light. The dome shape is pretty strong in rain and wind. The maroon color is surprisingly bright inside when outdoors. I bent my poles in a windstorm on a mountain (not intended conditions). It has stood up to a foot of snow on top of it overnight. CONS: flimsy stock pegs, I find the ventilation is not great, would prefer guys in middle of fly walls to keep fly and canopy apart. OVERALL: I love my tent and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Perfect for its intended uses, I probably use mine too hard and it has withstood it all.

Flawless?

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2007

I have had my mythos only a few short months. I had La Sportiva Cliffs previously, and sized these 1.5 sizes smaller than my Cliffs. They were really uncomfortable at first but they stretched to fit perfectly. Definitely size them almost too small. They do stretch in length a little bit. They do not have as much support as most shoes which can take a week or so to adjust to. They smear really good and just eat thin cracks. I find they edge pretty good as mine are so tight. The pattern is pretty cool. I worry about how I could possibly re-thread the laces if they broke! I prefer a slightly higher heel but the mythos heel holds very tight.

Good, not perfect

Black Diamond Raven Ultra Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2007

I use my Raven Ultra as my general mountaineering axe and sometimes as a second tool on steep snow climbs. I've had it for 1.5 years. It works very well within its intended purpose. I like the ergonomic feel of the head. I find the adze adequate for cutting ice. The shaft and head have both been very durable so far. I don't really like the spike design. I worry about its bite in ice and it tends to fill with snow. If I went back in time I would probably buy the Raven Pro or a Grivel Nepal SA instead. I do still really like my raven ultra: it is clean cut, simple, light and effective.

Functional

DMM Wallnuts

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2007

I really like my wallnuts. They seat really well in conventional nut placements and they fit especially well in spots with small rugosities. A good jerk sets them nice and tight. They are light. The anodizing matches Wild Country making for a great mixed set. The red wallnut is my go to piece. I place it every route. Climb on.
