Great shell

Moment Team Jacket 3L - Men's

Moment Team Jacket 3L - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 19, 2011

I just got the Moment Team 3L outerwear, and have spent enough time in it I feel like I can comment. First off, as has been mentioned, both pants and jacket are shells. They are not insulated, and are not warm. This may actually be my favorite feature. For years I've been in stylie ski clothing that was heavy and hot, with no option to layer down for spring skiing (or as we call it in CO, skiing).

I am 5'10" 175 lbs and got size L in both pants and jacket. The fit is loose and comfortable, without being bulky. I can wear layers underneath and a pack over the outside without an issue. They are very light, which makes mobility easy. I have been snowmobiling, skinning, and skiing in them and they are great for all activities. So far, the fabric has been very durable and completely waterproof, surviving a couple encounters with trees and with the snowmobile. Construction feels solid all around, and no seams are showing any sign of wear. I like to claim that I don't care what my ski gear looks like as long as it works, and now I don't have to. How can you argue with a Moment baseball kit?

Heavy but they ski well

Black Diamond Factor Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Factor Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

Nice wide fit, fits pretty similar to the 27 Salomon Course from a few years ago (pre-spaceframe honeycomb). Stiff forward flex, very stiff side to side, and excellent support rearward with the spoiler and tall, stiff liner. BOA system doesn't do much while skiing, but while skinning it allows you to undo the buckles, and the liner stays tight to your foot (= no blisters). Boots are noticeably heavy while skinning, but its a trade-off I'm willing to make for the first touring boot I've ever used that skied (mostly) like an alpine boot. Skinning on flat ground I notice that the cuff release doesn't allow the cuff to go beyond vertical. This is much less noticeable on steep skin tracks.

Small and light

Brunton 26DNL-CL Mirrored Compass

Brunton 26DNL-CL Mirrored Compass

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

Nice compass, very small and light. I'm a little worried that the hinge, which is just a thin piece of plastic that bends, could break with use, so we'll see about that. The slope-angle device works well. A great skiing/backcountry compass.

Good shoes

Vasque Velocity VST GTX Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Vasque Velocity VST GTX Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

I got the wide for my EE width foot. They are pretty narrow for a wide shoe, but they fit OK. Nice and light. Soles are pretty thick, I feel tall. Had them out for one hike in the snow, the waterproofing seems to work nicely. I like the tread, it should hold up well.
