A pic of my dad and brothers. The Red, on the right is the Westcomb Mirage, middle bottom, is the Backcountry.com Shift, Left is the Sierra Designs Hurricane, and the top in green is Marmot Precip.
Even up at Denali park we all stayed pretty dry when we were not swimming in the river.

I would say for camera use, buy these or mitts. I have never had good experience with gloves or mitts while shooting. I take mine off. I may have a super thin liner to help, but when they get too cold, you want to throw them in something that is as warm as possible, ie the mitts or this 3 finger.

This is not waterproof in that it has a membrane. It is waterproof since it is leather. I have these and love them. I once hucked a cliff and a rock caught my skis and I was in the pow digging them out for 20-30 min. After that I noticed they were wet around the seams, but they stayed warm and I did not notice them being wet inside. Hope that helps.

One thing to note in this jacket is it wears HUGE! Yes I intended to use all caps there.
This is meant to be an overcoat parka for many layers underneath. I normally fit XL and am bigger than this guy and I can wear this in a L if I was just wearing a shirt under it. Granted if I was in antartica, which is where this is made for, I would want an XL and have many other layers under this.

These are one of the better. I have tried, no bag one that was 89 and I turned into a sauna tube in a minute. Most will be waterproof but it is the breathability.
I like Big agnes for their eVent bivy or one that is goretex for the best breatheability.
Also yes get a bipod/tripod for soemthing off your face. Some dont care but I cant stand anything on my face.

At your size shoe, most likely. These are a Euro fit which actually is very different than to what we are used to. I sized up one whole size, so in Eu sizes 2, and they fit great. The idea is when you put them on you will have a space behind the heel. It usually is about one pinky width. Other than that these are the greatest shoes!

Just looking at these I am so sold! The question I have is the wear and tear on the slipper material or the outer shell. As I have seen with other PF shoes the soles are very flexible. Has anyone had experience with unusual wear on either the sole or the slipper sole?

This is very similar to the stingray in water resistance and breatheability, but the fit and material is the main difference. This is gore windstopper, the Stingray is softshell. The gore softshell is probably not as "swishy" or "noisy". The stingray also allows for more layers underneath as it is meant to be worn as an outershell more than this fury. The extra room on Arcteryx jackets you will find not in the waist, but in the arms and chest mainly. They will still taper down to fit your waist right.

I am not sure exactly on this one specifically, but when you gofrom XL to L there is a difference of 1-2 inches on the back, which is the name of the measurement. So it will be a little shorter at the waist. I would say 1 inches shorter roughly on this jacket. Of course you can always snag it and sned it back if it is too short...

This is a super light and warm glove. Dont be afraid to use something other than Down insulation though in gloves. There are plenty with primaloft and thinsulate that will be warm too. Will these be warm enough. Hard to say without trying honestly. It depends on how you handle the cold and how cold it really is. I would get something a little tougher than these though. Hestra Heli, Black Diamond Patrol, or the Marmot Randonee are all killer too and I have the Helis personally. THere is one problem with the Helis; my wife wont let me ever wear them since she is!

Technically if it is not 8k it cannot be called waterproof, so dont expect a lot out of this thing. Goretex is roughly 35k so just a bit better.

Check the details, They will say if the jacket has zip in computability or not. THis one does not. If you are trying to zip this under your down, it is not likely your down has that option fo a second zipper anyways. But you can wear two jacket. If you like this softshell, why not get it. Yeah it is a second zipper, but the zip in featuer is way overrated. You really limit yourself.

This is essentially a fleece, I dont know why you would put this fleece over another fleece. Yeah it is windproof, but the temp rating is really hard to determine. Are you going to be sitting down all day in the cold? Are you going to be running, very active, or just constantly moving from place to place? In reality even if you know that, it is still hard to determine unless you try it out and see if it works for you. This is pretty thin fleece and is mainly windproof. I would consider a softshell for something that is windproof, water resistant and about as thin, but if you are active keeps body heat in better, yet breathes so you dont overheat.

Water proof is exactly that, water cannot get through the material. Water resistant means the fabric will keep the water out for awhile, but after a long enough, or heavy enough, exposure water may get through. Water resistant fabric is often achieved by a spray coating on an otherwise non-repellant fabric.I sales person once told me that in order to be water proof, the seams of the garment, backpack, tent (whatever) had to be taped as well as the fabric had to be water proof. In answer to this specific jacket - it is water resistant, not waterproof, but this is good info to know the difference.

Actually, you've got it completely backwards. The Beta line is cut tighter, which obviously means there is less room for layering versus the Theta. The Beta is geared for technical backcountry use like climbing, whereas the Theta is more for light hiking and general wear. Also keep in mind that the SV version is meant for more heinous weather and gives a little more room for a thicker layer if that interests you.

This is not zip-in compatible. DOnt get too hung up on zip-in compatible, not many jackets are zip in anymore, they are taking it out or using a snap in feature. It was all the rage 10 years ago, but there are hundreds of jackets that might work better for you. All you have to do is 2 zippers instead and you have many more options for layering anyways. Just because Westcomb and Arcteryx dont have zip in compatible jackets does not mean they are worthless.

Honestly it is pretty tricky and so much a hastle that most companies do not sell kits. I have seen people "hack" the kayak and rig one on but if you are not technical, be careful. You can check with Necky and see what they can do. Another option is find a local paddle shop and see if they can put one on. Ideally the thing to do is pay the extra and get one with it already installed as it is a pain and sometimes will cost more to install it later. That is not including the pain of possible poking holes in your perfectly good rudder-less boat.

Fortunately Backcountry is pretty cool about stuff like this - that Tech specs are pretty handy - Pockets: [Shell] 2 front, 1 chest, 1 internal; [Liner] 2 frontAlso look at all the detail pics. There are some that show that the fleece zips in. I would guess that any tnf jacket will fit in this guy. I dont know why you want a zip in. There is a reason MHW and tnf are pulling away from this style of jacket though. It stinks. I doubt the shell is lined with mesh, but maybe. I totally agree on the NTF's site sucking a big fat rock and sinking to the bottom of the lake with their new change recently. Seriously who uses Flash in selling high amounts of inventory? But you can always talk to teh good peeps at BC.com and ask them to pull the item to find out. Then you can post what they find out for you here!

This is a stellar shade but you need to stake it down! It the wind is too crazy it will turn this into a kite, so right next to the lake in the sandy wet soil will probably not work, just so you know. No wind then donnt worry about the stakes of course.

Screw locks are super reliable and a classic, but the flick locks are nice. "best" is a relative term to your needs. Get one of each and see what you think. I may like the flick lock but someone else might say that screw lock is the only way to go.

Oh yeah with room to spare. For sure. Get the vestibule and you will love the extra room for a table or anything.

Hyvent is not superior. Goretex was the best until eVent came out. Hyvent is pretty breatheable and waterproof for sure, but goretex and eVent is more waterproof and breatheable. eVent is the most breatheable by far though, just as waterproof as Goretex. The interesting thing is goretex/eVent is rated at 45k or so and then TNF uses a stupid psi rating for their Hyvent so it is comparing apples and oranges to these numbers, but I have heard the 75 psi is like 20-25k or so, so it is not bad at all. Note on TNFS highest end jackets and they actually still use Goretex so even they recognize that it is better. They are capable of making more money by using a proprietary material that is good but not as great as goretex for most gear. Remember TNF 10-15 years ago? Their pricing was very Arcteryx because the majority of jackets were goretex...
