  • Bio:

I grew up in the wiles of New Mexico and never understood its beauty until I got outdoors and away from the towns. Now I live in Utah and have skied, hiked, paddled , fished and camped in about every where in the four states, among other ventures in Minnesota, Florida, Alaska and most other western states for that matter.

Trying to teach a 2 year old daughter and a wife to ski at the same time is daunting, but after teaching up at Park City Ski Resort I have some tricks up my sleeve still.

My main hobby is to shoot the action, not be in it. i do a lot of photography and I have seemed to dabble in almost every sport but just enough to know how to get the sickest shots.

Only Burton bindings will work with the ICS boards. Ideally you want the est to fully use the system.

The North Face Scrappy Hooded Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2008

Check the details, They will say if the jacket has zip in computability or not. THis one does not. If you are trying to zip this under your down, it is not likely your down has that option fo a second zipper anyways. But you can wear two jacket. If you like this softshell, why not get it. Yeah it is a second zipper, but the zip in featuer is way overrated. You really limit yourself.

Columbia Double Whammy Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2008

This is one layer, it does not flip inside out. This is the cheapest columbia on the site, it is not the best.
Far from goretex too. This is 3k waterproof. Technically if it is not 8k it cannot be called waterproof, so dont expect a lot out of this thing. Goretex is roughly 35k so just a bit better.

The North Face Odyssey Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2008

Yeah this is only water resistant, not waterproof. Most softshells are this way, but yeah for snow, it is not that big of a deal. It will allow you to breathe more than a shell if you are huffing in the pow, but on the heavy snow or rainy days, this will start to get wet.

Salomon Snowtrip II Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2008

--------------------------

G, I've owned this jacket for the past 3 years. It's my go to jacket for snowboarding and around town. It'll keep you dry in a blizzard. The ClimaPro is awesome. Probably would not recommend it for raingear, but I was on my butt for most of last season when I first started to snowboard. Never got cold or wet. I have longer arms too 35" and the large jacket fits me fine. Also, I can't tell you how many times the liner fleece has come in handy when your significant other forgets to dress for the occasion. My only gripe is that the snap-ins for the inside fleec on the sleeves are weak...they're just buttons sewn to the outer jacket on a slim piece of cloth so the cloth tears if you forget to unbutton your inner fleece before you remove it. nothing to do w/ performance. Too big of a jacket to throw a raincoat over, imo.

*I completely deleted Spencer's contribution. I'm sorry, Spence!

Mountain Hardwear Sunrise 50 Sleeping Bag: 50 Degree Down

November 6, 2008

I am 6 foot .5 inches. I fit a regular size - 6 foot bag without any problems. I would stick with a regular.

This all depends on how & what you sleep with, e.g. extra clothes, fuel canister, etc. For your size I'd order the regular. It has less volume to warm up.

Killer combo!

Big Agnes Moon Hill Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down w/ Mummy Pad

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

This is a sick sleeping bag and is super toasty warm. I notice people tend to have bad reviews for Big agnes because they misunderstand that they are not your normal sleeping bag! The bag has no insulation on the bottom. This is smart since there is no poin really since as soon as you lay on it, you have flattened any insulation there anyways. The pad is what keeps you warm on the ground. SO Big agnes slapped in a sleeve instead at the bottom to put the pad in. Never did I roll around and lose the pad from under me. Such a confort as compared to any other bag I ever had. It is kind of a love it or hate it system though. Some complain that is limits mobility in your bag or you cannot sleep on your side. I say they are babies! I am 270 lbs, and a big kid in the shoulders and gut. I was comfy on my side, back, stomach, anyway. Granted I was pretty snug in a few positions but I am not dancing in my bag, I am just trying to sleep and stay warm. This combo is a winner. The pad is tough, and rolls nicely. I might get an air core too for something lighter on the summer trips, but for 0 degrees, you will be toasty with the heavier pad. Big anges seems to rate a bag at 0 degrees, for example, and then they seem to out perform that by 5-10 degrees. Cant totally rely on that, but that is my experience with this one. The zipper is strong, goes about 3/4 down the side of the bag and zips in nicely into another if you get left and right zip bags. The best testament to these bags is my wife! She has had trouble finding a bag that fits her hips and keep her warm too. Yeah we could get a crap-bag from wal-town, but we wanted something that will work and is light. This bag won her over and she does not complain about being cold! Woohoo!

Perfect for the little ones

Lafuma Trek Jr. Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

I got this for my daughter who is almost 3 feet tall (3 years old) and expect her to use it for a long time. There was no problem with her on one cold windy night and the construction is pretty dang strong for 44 bones! The fabric next to the fabric is pretty tough and hardly ever gets caught up in the zipper. I think this will last her a long time. Bag comes with a stuff sack that is fine, but I can slap this in an event compression sack to keep it dry with other gear and I have no worries.
