  • Stomping Grounds:

Utah and Maine. Favorite places: Alta, Moab, Jackson (WY), Acadia NP, Sugarloaf, anywhere on the ocean or in the mountains.
  • Bio:

I grew up in Maine, splitting my time between Portland, Sugarloaf and Mount Desert Island. After college I decided I needed a lot more powder in my life so I moved to Alta, thinking I'd be there for a few months. Two years later, I still can't get enough of snow and mountains.

KEEN Targhee ll Hiking Shoe - Women's

I have a ridiculously narrow heel and a smallish forefoot, and have major blister issues with most shoes. I really like the Montrail Namche and the La Sportiva Pikes Peak trail running shoe for a low top.

Scott Evolution Jacket - Women's

March 25, 2009

That's going to depend a lot on the weather conditions and how hot/cold you ski. Since you're going for an insulated jacket I'm assuming you'll be mostly in chilly weather. I am a huge fan of merino wool as a next-to-skin layer, a lightweight or a midweight, like Icebreaker's BodyFit260. Then a heavier insulating layer like Cloudveil's Run Don't Walk, or even a vest (Patagonia's MicroPuff is a good bet) to keep your core warm. I like to have lots of layering options so I can adjust, sometimes I'll even lose a layer half way through the day as it starts to warm up.

Osprey Packs Stratos 32 Backpack - 1800-2200 cu in

I have a 35 liter, just slightly bigger than this one, that I use as both a day pack and an overnighter. I definitely have to strap some things onto the outside but if I can split up bulky items like tents and sleeping bags with a partner and pack light overall it works just fine.

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Alpine Ski 08/09 Model

Go big or go home. 190 all the way. If you generally ski pretty aggressively you'll like the extra length, the ski will be more stable at high speeds. And when you hit the pow the longer skis will give you a little more float.

I'm not allergic to wool or anything but I usually have to wear a cotton t-shirt underneath a wool sweater to control the itch factor. And I have never, ever had a problem with merino. Literally all of my ski baselayers, head to toe, are merino.

March 23, 2009

These would work:
http://www.backcountry.com/store/SAL1513/Salomon-Z14-Alpine-Ski-Binding.html

You don't want a binding with a ridiculously wide brake because the skis only have an 80mm waist. These ones won't hang out too far and for most people a 5-14 din will work just fine.

Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

March 17, 2009

They are both rated to 15 degrees, so the warmth is identical. The difference is due to the quality of the down - the helium is 850 fill, a finer down with a better warmth to weight ratio. So it weighs a bit less and will pack down smaller. Also if you're looking at the helium eq, it's water resistant, which is great if you're backpacking in wet areas. They're all great bags though.

Head Skis USA Monster iM 82 Ski

March 13, 2009

You can tour on any ski, provided they have touring bindings and skins cut to the appropriate size. However you will have a lot more fun if the skis are designed for touring, and therefore lightweight. 82 mm underfoot is also pretty skinny for a backcountry ski as well, since you'll mostly be skiing untracked. Check out Black Diamond's or G3s line of telemark/AT skis.

I second everyone else - the waist band is weird, but otherwise these are great pants. If I still skied the east, I'd say they would be great under a shell pant, but in my neck of the woods it rarely gets that cold. I wear 'em at home after a day on the slopes, at the rock gym and once at a snowshoe race.

Arc'teryx has an athletic fit (read: fits skinny people), but is fairly consistent across their line. Normally for your height and weight I'd recommend a large, but if the large in the covert didn't work go ahead and size down. Or if you're really concerned about it, order both and return one.

No, weight doesn't affect skin performance. Just look for a set that will fit your skis width wise, trim to fit and you'll be good to go. If anything you'll have an advantage on a slicked out skin track--more weight means more stick in the snow.

Lange Exclusive 90 Ski Boot - Women's

March 5, 2009

bc.com is pretty good with returning items, check their policy at the bottom of the page, but the 90FR just has a stiffer flex, which isn't as comfortable and forgiving, but gives you more power transmission and edge pressure.______Unless you're either tiny or an intermediate level skier I'd go for the 90. An 80 flex is going to be too soft if you're skiing aggressively.

Volkl Mantra Alpine Ski

February 10, 2009

If I were you I'd probably go for the 184s, especially if you are indeed an agressive skier. They'll ski a little short with the twin tip and the extra length will give you some float and the ability to charge hard. That's a good choice on the binding. At 100 mm it won't be too wide for the ski.

Touring glove for cold hands

Outdoor Research ExtraVert Glove - Women's

Outdoor Research ExtraVert Glove - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 10, 2009

I needed a spring/touring glove but didn't want to go too light because I have little to no circulation in my extremities and my fingers and toes are in deep freeze from November-May. The extravert turned out to be the perfect solution. Wool-lined means they wick like a champ and stay warm for the descent. Dexterity isn't too bad, I'd recommend sizing down if that's an issue, since they will stretch a bit.

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Women's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2009

Love this. I normally wear a medium but went for the large, which was definitely a good call. I've worn it underneath a heavier duty shell as an extra layer on cold ski days, and on its own running and nordic skiing. I like that the collar isn't super high so it fits nicely under another jacket. Oh, and "highly water resistant" = beads up nicely unless you are literally dumping buckets of water on yourself. Trust me, I accidentally tested it out with coffee.

Lange Exclusive 100 Ski Boot - Women's

September 4, 2008

It really depends on the shape of your foot and your body type. I'd go for a less stiff boot than this one, 100 flex is pretty burly for most women. Shoot for 90 or less, you'll be a lot more comfortable. Langes are great if you have super narrow feet, Rossignol runs a bit narrow as well. I highly recommend investing in some foot beds, such as superfeet, most factory footbeds don't do a whole lot. Once you've worn the boots for 10-20 days you can also take them to a shop where they'll blow out any hot spots. Usually runs about $50 but worth every penny.

Can't lose with the Airestream

Zeal Airestream Sunglasses - Polarized - Women's

Zeal Airestream Sunglasses - Polarized - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

The visual clarity you get with Zeal's ZB-14 lens is amazing--they work great in variable light conditions. I was worried the airestream's would look huge on my face, but they're actually super flattering, and fit so well they are comfortable to wear running. One fun feature is the nose pads are reversible, wear one side if you have a wider nose, the other if you have a narrow nose.

Namche - blister-free support

Montrail Namche Hiking Boot - Women's

Montrail Namche Hiking Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2008

My past experiences with hiking boots have gone like this: buy, hike, blister, hike, blister, hike, blister, get frustrated and go back to hiking in sneakers. I had almost given up when the Montrail rep suggested I try these. My first big hike with them was a 2-day trek in southern Utah. I covered my heels in moleskin but was still shocked when, 17 miles later I had only the tiniest of blisters. Since then they have broken in quite nicely. The Namche provides plenty of support for hiking with a 20-30lb pack but doesn't feel like a straitjacket for your foot. If you hate traditional hiking boots, the Namches are for you.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 15, 2008

I've had this jacket for awhile but didn't feel I had the authority to write a review until recently, when I got caught in a torrential downpour while hiking. I ended up sprinting about a mile to get back to the car, and the only part of me that didn't get soaked to the bone was everything under the PreCip. When it started getting clammy I just opened the pit zips. Great bang for your buck.

Patagonia Active Hipster Brief - Women's

Patagonia Active Hipster Brief - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 15, 2008

If only I knew about these when I was running marathons. The Patagonia Active Hipster Brief will not ride up. Ever. Like going commando only better, because the material wicks incredibly well. I have the Active Brief and the Active Boy Short, but I like the Hipsters the best for the lower cut and comfy fit.

Patagonia Hotline Tank Top - Women's

Patagonia Hotline Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 21, 2008

I've worn this top so much this summer it's getting ridiculous. Love the fit--like the previous reviewer I like it better without the split back. Shows just the right amount of skin, and works for the gym or a casual night out.

Chaco Switch Sandal - Women's

Chaco Switch Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 21, 2008

If you're anything like me, you probably have a closet (or two) filled with shoes but wear only one or two pairs 90% of the time. The Switch sandal is one of those. They take a week or two to break in, but once they're nice and molded to your foot it's hard to go with anything else. Not as burly as the classic chaco but great for casual wear.

Pack Luxury

Osprey Packs Xenon 70 Backpack - Women's - 3900-4300cu in

Osprey Packs Xenon 70 Backpack - Women's - 3900-4300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2008

Definitely worth the sticker shock. I'm still figuring out all of the features, but overall the Xenon has way exceeded my expectations. The custom moldable hip belt is genius, it keeps the pack right where you want it. It's really easy to adjust for optimal weight-bearing, and I especially liked that I could shift the weight around when a body part got sore. Love the bottom zipper, makes for easy access to larger items and overall better organization. The sizing is similar to other Osprey packs, but I recommend trying it on if possible. By torso measurement I should be an xs but a small actually fit better.

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2008

A couple weeks ago I underestimated travel time and ended up having to search for a campsite in the dark. The only one available by then was a walk in site that was well out of the range of car headlights. Luckily I had my Apollo along and tent set up was a breeze. I found it a little on the heavier side for backpacking, but the extra ounces are well worth it for the light quality and power.

Marmot Arete Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Marmot Arete Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 July 18, 2008

I am a really cold sleeper, I got this for sultry summer nights only. I always seem to underestimate desert nighttime temperature drops and I've actually used it down to about 25 degrees (which was pretty uncomfortable). But I was fine in the 30-40 degree range. The best part is its negligible weight and amazing packability.

Osprey Packs Aura 35 Women's Backpack - 1900 - 2300 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2008

I got this pack because I wanted something that could easily transition between a daypack and an overnighter. The Aura 35 does not disappoint. With my tent rigged on the outside straps I can easily carry enough for a day or two long trek. Although it's bigger than I need for most day hikes, the pack is light enough that I barely notice it's there when it only holds a few key items. The pocket on the hip belt is another neat detail, great for a camera or energy bars.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2008

I bought this as an extra so my boyfriend and I could make eggs and coffee at the same time. He has the MSR WindPro, another great stove, but we usually end up just using my JetBoil because it's so easy to set up. I have a history of lighting things on fire with camp stoves but this is easy even for me, and boils water unbelievably fast. The only issue I've ever had was heating up some noodles; I had a hard time stirring all the way down so some got stuck on the bottom.

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2008

I bought some BD Lyrics about a year ago and threw some Fritschis on them. I haven't had any problems with this binding, I like the four heel position options, and they've never turned tele on me. They're reasonably lightweight although if I was doing major multi-day tours I'd probably want the lighter Dynafits. For a mix of resort and day tours the Fritschis rock!

Smith Anthem Spherical Series Goggles - Mirror Lens-Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 4, 2008

Remember back in the day when we had to wear the mondo boy-sized goggles? Yeah those days are over. My anthems fit great, work perfectly with my helmet (the Smith Premise) and provide awesome visual clarity. I got two pairs, one with sensor mirror lenses and one with the platinum, so no matter what the light conditions I am set. You can switch out the lenses...I'm just lazy.

Smith Premise Helmet

Smith Premise Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 February 29, 2008

Not only is my new helmet adorable--I got the one with the hummingbirds--but the vents on the top work perfectly with my Smith Anthem goggles to suck out the fog. I've been wearing a helmet for years, but this one is by far the most comfortable. The fit is easy to adjust, similar to a high-end bike helmet and a must if you tie your hair back. If you've never worn a helmet, this is a great one to start with.

Cloudveil Run Don't Walk Zip Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Cloudveil Run Don't Walk Zip Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2008

All of the guys and girls at my local ski shop wear this top all the time, so I wanted to see what was up. It's a ridiculously comfortable and versatile layering piece, it kept me warm on one of the nastiest days at Alta but breathes nicely so I never overheat. Plus it's cute enough for the apres bar. I'm a size 8 and the medium is perfect, with enough room to layer underneath on the most brutal days.

Cloudveil Koven Jacket - Women's

Cloudveil Koven Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2008

I got the Koven after wearing a heavier insulated jacket for a few seasons. When I first tried it on I was worried that the shell wouldn't be warm enough, especially because it weighs next to nothing. But I tested it out skiing on one of the nastiest, windiest days this season and it stood up amazingly well. The Koven is completely water proof and wind proof, and is amazingly breathable to boot. Can't wait to take this baby touring.

Cloudveil Koven Pant - Women's

Cloudveil Koven Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2008

I'm a little bit of a cloudveil fiend. I got these pants for touring, but have ended up wearing them all the time. They're super comfy and have a ton of stretch, perfect for negotiating a slicked out skin track. My tail never got wet, even sitting in the snow on a lunch break. They sit a little higher on the waist than I'm used to (I'm guilty of the lowrider craze) but after skiing the deeps I found I liked it, and didn't need a powder skirt.

Cloudveil Run Don't Walk Boxer - Women's

Cloudveil Run Don't Walk Boxer - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2008

I ski hard, and my legs get hot if I wear too much, so I usually wear a shell pant with lightweight long underwear. The only part of me that ever gets cold is my bum from sitting on iced over chairlifts. With these boxers, problem solved. These are deliciously comfy and provide just the right amount of warmth in the right area. To be honest, half the time I wear them as pjs too!

Icebreaker BodyFit200 Legless Bottoms - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2008

This might sound gross, but I've worn these literally every time I've gone skiing this season--25 days and counting. Don't worry, I do occasionally wash them, but they practically don't need it. Merino wool does not stink, no matter how much you sweat. The weight is perfect and I like the length, just past my ski socks.

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2008

I gave this as a gift to my boyfriend, and he pretty much hasn't taken the thing off since. It's a great piece for touring, because it breathes well for the ascent and then keeps you warm on the way down. And it looks great. Right about the sizing though, he's tall and thin, 6' and a 32" waist, and the large is perfect.

KEEN Stockholm Winter Boot - Women's

KEEN Stockholm Winter Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 10, 2008

Last winter I got by wearing my trail running shoes in the snow and packing my heels if I needed to dress up a bit. Needless to say, I'm never going back. The Stockholms are nice enough for work if you have a casual dress code but I have also worn them shoveling snow, stomping around Alta and on various plane trips across the country. The zipper means they slide on and off quite easily (major bonus in the line for airport security). They keep my feet cozy and comfy even when it's frigid.

Lolë Comfy Sweater - Women's

Lolë Comfy Sweater - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2007

This thing will be glued to me all winter long. I'm not sure I'd call it a sweater, because sweater does not imply the deliciousness of the fleecy lining. More like a cross between a track jacket and that t-shirt you've had since eighth grade that is so comfortable you can't bear to throw away, plus a dash of cuteness. It's super flattering and doesn't add a lot of bulk. The basil color is adorable.

Black Diamond Ascension Custom STS Climbing Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Custom STS Climbing Skins

Rating for this product: 4 November 1, 2007

I got a pair of the Customs for my Black Diamond 173 cm Lyrics, which are 120mm in the tip. I got the 120mm, 167-174 length and they just barely fit my skis lenfthwise. They also required a bit of snipping to get the width right, but it's super easy with the included tool. All that being said, I made it up a pretty slick skin track and didn't slide a bit. They're quite sticky and easy to get on and off. And cheaper than the regular STS skins!

I love this top! It's fitted on top and then flows out at the stomach without creating the pregnant look, and hits at the hip for a very flattering cut. The cross back tie is adorable. Sexy without being sleazy and can be dressed up or down.
