Mountain Hardwear Kiva 4-Person Shelter

April 6, 2009

We used this Kiva for our cook tent while on a climbing trip in India's Miyar Valley. Our Nepali cook was super impressed with how much stuff fit in the tent and he cooked in this thing for four weeks - I was nervous about the kerosene stoves we had burning the tent up, but the fabric held up very well!

Yes the waist belt detaches, as do most of the other packs Hardwear makes. I have hauled this pack some..but the sides of the pack and the straps will wear out quickly if you hauled it often - if you need a haul bag might I suggest the Metolius Sentinel, its about the same size (2800)and will last a lifetime of hauling.

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Jacket - Men's

April 28, 2009

This jacket is designed for both, but certainly excels at insulating during cold and wet alpine assaults – one thing is for sure – it’s a great jacket that breathes well! You will probably need a L or a XL, it’s best to make a few simple measurements with a cloth tape measure, then check the sizing chart on this page. If you lack the availability of the cloth tape, use a bit of string to measure you chest, arms, etc…mark the string, then check the length with a standard tape measure.

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

April 20, 2009

You found your shell right here with the Epic Jacket, for the price it can not be beat!! The Epic is very well built, big pockets and pit zips (you want those for sure!)- I have had one for 3 years now and it still sheds water like it did when it was new! Seems to me you will need a medium or possibly a large, depending on your sleeve length and so on, check the sizing chart on this page to be sure. If you need to spend under $100 let me suggest to you the Sierra Designs Hurricane HP ($73.96)- it has pit zips, pockets and a good reputation. Be weary of anything under $70, from my experience they just can't build them to last at that cost...

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

April 14, 2009

Hmmm...if you need a layering piece consider, perhaps, the MHW LoDown, it has pit zips and sheds water better and is a tad lighter. I would think an XL shell would fit fine over the XL Sub Zero, keep in mind this jacket is super warm - a perfect companion for slower pace travel!!!

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Jacket - Men's

April 13, 2009

Sounds like you would fit into a medium well. Although, if your chest/mid section is any larger than 41" (measure this with a layering piece on) you might want to consider a large, but at 5'6" the sleeves would probably start to get baggy - your best bet is the medium for sure. Depending on where your at, you might not need the 200 wt. fleece layer, this jacket is pretty warm.

NRS Bravo 2 Foot Pump

Rating for this product: 3 April 6, 2009

This pump is going to work fine if your filling a small volume boat and don't plan on using it much, they tend to wear out quick. The foot-pump action is an ok idea but really takes more time than your typical handle-pump style. I would say pay an extra 8 bucks and get the Air Double Action Hand Pump!

The double action is great, and its small form (19" x 9" and pumps at least 3.0 psi), fits well in the raft for long trips!! Get one!

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Jacket - Men's

March 27, 2009

You are looking in the right direction for sure! The Compressor jacket is a tad lighter, plus it stays warm if it gets soked and the Compressor is a tad longer. The Phantom is going to be warmer but if the down gets wet the jacket losses some warmth. They have about the same features and the Phantom packs down a little smaller. If you plan on needing you jacket for wet/soggy and cold conditions, go with the Compressor - it kinda sounds to me though, that the Phantom is going to be the better choice for you.

Mountain Hardwear Le Hoody Royale Full-Zip Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

A rad hoodie from a rad company made from organic material! It's pretty warm and soft. The hood fits me perfectly, it does'nt cover up half my face like some other hoodies I've worn, I have a medium sized head I suppose. The length is just bellow my belt line and the thumb loops are nice when I need to throw on a shell really quick-like and not have to fuss with the sleeves bunching.

Marmot Ellsworth Insulated Jacket - Men's

Marmot Ellsworth Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 26, 2009

I had the misfortune of leaving my jacket at home and borrowed one of these from a buddy for a multi-pitch climbing day in NC. We got hammerd by wind and a little rain - I was cold and wet to say the least! The fabric ripped super quick and the hood fit poorly over my helmet, causing the bottom of the jacket to rise, exposing my cold skin. I'm not a big fella, 5.9, 160, but the shoulders were pretty tight, I felt like I was going to tear the back of the jacket, Hulk style! The ability to cram its self into the inside pocket was nice, even though the zipper got stuck and tore some (more) of the fabric. It worked, I guess, but I learned my lesson. Probly a good jacket if you need something to put in your golf bag, not for mountains the though, in my opinion.

Santa Cruz Heckler Mountain Bike - X9 AM Build Kit

Santa Cruz Heckler Mountain Bike - X9 AM Build Kit

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

One of MBs favorite bikes of all time, what else needs to be said! Great all mountain XC bike, that handles the DH pretty well also, around 28 lbs, sweet, fast and a great climber. One of my favorite parts of the bike is the simple single pivot design you'll save loads on the cost of maintenance since there is only one pivot. I'm 5.9, 160 and the medium gives me plenty of stand over room and soaks up pounding bumps like a dirt bike chassis. This bike sets into corners much like a motorcycle also, super fun!! You will not need to change any components from this simple-to-set-up build kit, get one!

Black Diamond Tracer Helmet

Black Diamond Tracer Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 March 25, 2009

Great rock climbing helmet, super light and fits tight. It's ok for ice in my opinion, as soon as you put a hat on under it the helmet starts to ride high on my head. I wont take another one of these on a big trip either, just the plane ride crushed one and on another trip the constant punishment from being tossed around in the backpack trashed it. Overall though, it is my helmet of choice for any non-alpine venus, but if you need a helmet to last for years keep looking.

Metolius Ultralight Offset TCU

Metolius Ultralight Offset TCU

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

These little buggers are a must for flared horizontal placments - like eyebrow pitches at looking glass in north carolina - for vertical pin scars they fit pretty well, but tend to not sit well if the cable can't fit into the crack, but if it's steep they are bomber. Basically if you are looking to start building rour rack get a set of regular tcu's first, but if you need some gear to fill the need for special offset placements look no further! Plus these cams are so freakin light it will blow your mind, but not you wallet.

Metolius Master Cam

Metolius Master Cam

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

As a few other reviewers have stated - the trigger is the biggest problem with these cams. If you load the unit in a horizontal position the trigger cables get super worked, hopefully this will be fixed soon! But, I have hammered on them for a while now and they still have great action. The narrow 4 cam head is great and fits snug in tight spots, I think a little better then a BD C3 of a comparable size, plus they cost way less than the BD units! Super light, you will notice a difference from other units, trust me. I found the #4,#5 & #6 to be kinda floppy and don't use them much. The smaller units have replaced my Aliens and my C3's! Overall great value, get some!

Metolius Astro Nut Packaged Free Set #6-10

Metolius Astro Nut Packaged Free Set #6-10

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

Metolius has answered the call for a USA made version of HB's standard setting offset nut! They stick to the rock so well, I feel like I could just throw them at the crack and be safe. Their shape is perfect for tiny irregularities in small fractures and these little widgets are super light! The offset silicon bronze material with rounded corners make a huge difference and in my opinion, set them apart from other small nuts, like BD's steel with square corners. Metolius gear is quickly becoming the workhorse of my climbing rack. Great value!

Metolius Stomp Crash Pad

Metolius Stomp Crash Pad

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2009

The best, cheapest pad around! These pads last, carry well and are light weight, so you don't get worked luggin it around. It packs up fast and the dual density foam absorbs impact time and time again! Don't be fooled by other manufacturers with "cheaper" hinged pads - the foam is not good (to stiff!) and the angled hing on the Metolius pads is far better than the standard hing design, that you will most likley poke your foot through (the gutter) onto the ground.

Sterling Marathon Sport Rope - 10.4mm

Sterling Marathon Sport Rope - 10.4mm

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2008

Burly rope. Though the description states it's better for free climbing than wall climbing, I gotta say it has lasted through some pretty long wall rts in Canada - wet, loose, sharp crystals everywhere - I still use the same cord for working hard free climbs!

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 3 December 22, 2008

Thin soles and mostly a smoke-and-mirrors design. Overall good fit, they tend to run big. Heel cup is nice, but the yellow rubber around the foot is a bit much and makes them heavier than they should be. Good down turned toe design, but it wears out pretty quick and after a re-sole it loses it's point. The rubber on the top of the toe felt like plastic. One of the most expensive shoes on the market - I.M.H.O. not worth the price, but overall a good shoe none-the-less.

Best value!!

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2008

Can't beat the price! The shoes overall durability is substandard, but they climb very well - super sticky rubber. These shoes are built to climb well on anything, though they hardly excel at one specific climbing style; maybe steep face climbing if anything. The Defy's also hold their shape well even after several resoles. If your looking for a low cost, no waste minamalist design and a super good value, this is your shoe!

Montrail Hardrock Mid GTX Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hardrock Mid GTX Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2008

The Hardrock being the standard for trail running, this high top version is now the standard for moving fast in the sloppy stuff and keeping your feet dry! Great support, lightweight, super comfy and the tred digs into the mud like no other. If your planning on needing to move fast with a pack on the trail in bad conditions this is your shoe!

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

December 20, 2008

The Arcteryx Maverick is barely wind-resistent but is a tad lighter than the Windstopper Tech jkt. If you want to be able to just have one jkt to shed light rain and is wind-proof get the Windstopper Tech.

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

December 19, 2008

The Apogee is heavier and only 600 fill, but comparable in price. The Black Hawk is also kinda heavy and only 550 fill, but only costs around $350. The TNF jkts have more bells and whistles, but many would argue they are about half the jkt as the Absolute Zero!! Stick with Hardwear for sure.

Mountain Hardwear Downhill Down Parka - Men's

December 16, 2008

For best performance, it is a good idea to keep your waterproof/breathable Gore-Tex® or Conduit™ shell clean and its DWR (durable water repellent) finish freshly charged. This means keeping oil and grease away from the garment, washing it when it gets dirty and reapplying its DWR finish.Shells can be machine-washed in warm (not hot) water using regular powdered laundry detergent. Wash in a front-loading washing machine only. Do not use Woolite, other cleaners with lanolin (or any other oil), or fabric softener. Put the garment through at least two rinse cycles, as the detergent can interact with the DWR finish and needs to be totally rinsed out of the material. After the shell has been washed, reapply the DWR finish while the garment is still damp. The heat of the dryer will help set the DWR finish into the fabric. Tumble dry on medium heat.We recommend you re-treat your shell at the beginning of your wet weather season, and at least once during the season. However, if you are washing your shell often, we recommend re-treating the DWR finish more frequently. For best results, use spray-on, rather than wash-in, products. Two brands we suggest are NikWax and Revivex from W.L. Gore. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Once you have successfully cleaned and refinished your shell, it should work as well as new again.Three-Layer TipIf the lining of your three-layer waterproof/breathable garment becomes coated with condensed moisture when you're working so hard the vapor can't be transported out fast enough, try this: Turn the garment inside out and give it a good shake. This will get rid of most of the moisture and return you to a relatively dry state.

Evolv Maximus Approach Shoe - Men's

Evolv Maximus Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 3, 2008

So comfy in aiders! If you sz them tight (I wear a 10 (mens) street shoe and found the sz10 to fit perfectly snug w/ socks) they work really well for hard fat cracks. I would not take these shoes into the mountains, your feet would freeze if they got wet, but I suppose they would climb better than Five Tens Guide Tennie. Probly the best shoe out for doing speed ascents in the Valley and such!
