Suunto Observer Altimeter Watch

Suunto Observer Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 3 January 11, 2012

Just read the reviews on this watch and I'm kinda surprised. I bought it five or six years ago and haven't had to change the band yet. Changed the battery a couple of times and the slot in the back of the watch is kinda chewed up. While I've worn it outdoors/ocean, it hasn't seen a lot of that kind of use, so maybe that's why my band hasn't deteriorated. I've found the altimeter to be kinda wonky; there have been times when I'm standing at sea level and my altitude can vary widely. Manually setting the altitude to sea level helps for a little bit.
I don't find resetting the watch to be at all intuitive; I'm going to use the altimeter tracking function this weekend and I need to reread the directions on how to do it.
I find it comfortable and light.
I bought it on close out for cheap, don't think I would pay the asking price for it.

Stoic Merino Comp Hiking Socks - 2-Pair

Stoic Merino Comp Hiking Socks - 2-Pair

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2011

I like my socks. I have tons and tons and tons. Way too many. I've been wearing this to work with my dress shoes (don't really care if they match), as they are very comfy. They do slide down your calves a bit, but not an issue for me. I'll be curious to see how long before they start to wear out. Thinking I need more!

SOG Knives Toothlock Knife

SOG Knives Toothlock Knife

Rating for this product: 1 November 21, 2011

Hated it. Opened the knife, played with it for five minutes, put it back in the box, mailed it back.

The ergonomics of this knife are designed for someone who wears gloves or has slippery hands. I found the knife far too painful on bare skin, as the contact points would dig into the hand in a variety of grips. This included the thumbstuds, the hilt, and the slide lock button.

I let a couple of friends with knives (fwk) play with it and they all thought it was very uncomfortable as well.

I thought the opening system was a gimmick. If you held the slide lock open then flicked your wrist, the blade would open. Which is no big deal as several of my other knives you can just flick your wrist and the blade opens.

Really wanted to like this knife, with the Sai-Mai steel.

Stoic Merino Comp Trail No-Show Sock - 2pr

Rating for this product: 3 June 27, 2011

I like these socks. Good for road running. Being ankleless, dirt and stuff gets in if I wear them off road. Comfy. Merino. What else could you need? As with their taller siblings, I don't like the 'R' and 'L' thing, but that's me.

Stoic Merino Comp Trail Crew Sock - 1pr

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2011

I like socks. I really like the backcountry socks over the years. These are a worthy prodigy. I've used them for hiking, running and casual use. They work well. A little bit more cush than traditional thin bike socks, but not overly so.
Do have to admit, I'm not a big fan of the 'R' and 'L' thing.
Think I've got a pair on right now!

Garmont 9.81 Escape Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Garmont 9.81 Escape Trail Run Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 27, 2011

Got these shoes off S&C. Wanted a pair of trail runners to use for hiking (when I don't want to wear the Garmont hiking boots). Initially felt odd out of the box, but after wearing them around the house for a while, they were comfy. I wore them on a rocky beach/coral hike and they were fine. Followed that up with a lengthy wet/muddy rocky hike, and I have to say they were very good. The minimal tread didn't clog (although there is a cut out on the bottom of the sole) but still delivered good traction. I like the lacing system as well. Works better than conventional shoe laces. Not as light as some other shoes I've had, but still, worth the S&C price. Three stars as they are better than average but not a standout.

shorts a go-go

Stoic Thrive Short - Men's

Stoic Thrive Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 5, 2011

Alright. I like these shorts. Got them in the mail yesterday, wore them on a four hour hike that had 8 stream crossings and some serious water fall scrambling. Extremely comfortable. And they dried really quick after the stream crossings and after bush whacking through the wet ferns.

They do have some flaws, namely two tiny pockets. If you are doing anything with any gear, you'd need a pack to carry stuff. For the post hike maw-fest, I was carrying a cell phone, keys and wallet and the pockets were pretty maxed out.

The sizing is odd. I'm a 32/33" and the medium is snug. Snug like 'not using the waist belt feature at all snug', snug like 'hey, is that VBL I see? snug', snug like 'I'm not eating ice cream snug.'

These are probably the lightest pair of shorts I've ever owned. Nice and stretchy. The material is very soft, almost makes me want to go commando in them. I like the welded seams. More akin to a pair of nice board shorts. I'm going to try running in them this week and see how they feel. They'll be great for bashing the crap out of.

Slightly disappointed that most of the Stoic stuff I've bought recently is made over seas.

So after wearing and washing for two months, they fit better. The material seems to have stretched a little bit.

Stoic Breathe Boxer - Men's

Stoic Breathe Boxer - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 24, 2011

My boys like them. They breath well (the boxers, not the boys), they aren't too long, nor too short. I have numerous pairs.
Some times I'd like a button on the flap, but not going to quibble over small things.

I will refrain from posting any pictures or videos of the boxers in use. :-)

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2010

I like backcountry socks. They're comfy and look good. I've worn them trail running, road running, and riding my bike and they are comfy. Even worn them casually. Do have to make sure that I get the "L" and the "R" on the correct feet, but I like them!

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 April 1, 2009

I spent 10 days wearing this top in Seattle. By the time I came home, the left cuff had come completely unstitched, most of the right cuff as well, and the hem was on the way.
Other then that, this is a great piece of fleece. Layered it under other fleece, gore-tex, or a soft shell. Great for casual wearing. Sucks about the stitching though.

Best. Shorts. Ever!

Fox Attack Bike Short - Men's

Fox Attack Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 23, 2009

I think I have four pairs of these shorts. Yes, I'm a bike clothing whore.

Found them to be incredible comfortable on the bike, very cool and the pad is comfortable. Off the bike they feel like a loaded diaper, which isn't good, but hey, just get on the bike and ride!

I'm concerned about the quality, on two of my pairs, the little mesh fox head thing is starting to de-laminate, and the welded pockets are unwelding.

If you live in a hot place, they are great shorts. With the removable liner, you can wear one outer pair with different liners, great for a bike trip.

Good Shoes

Northwave Kameleon Mountain Bike Shoe - Men's

Northwave Kameleon Mountain Bike Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2009

I've been wearing NW shoes for several years now, I like them better then sidis (previous shoe, not very stiff), or Nike (Cairns RIP), or Specialized. I find the Kamelons to be very comfortable for my big feet. Stiff enough for riding, not to bad for the occasional hike-a-bike. And they don't look like space man shoes.

One draw back to the shoes is that there isn't a lot of protection on them (they are more XC then anything else), so had the misfortune of having a piece of bamboo slide around the instep sole, then puncture the leather (pleather?) and into my foot. I glued the hole shut and have been using them ever since. That pair is near death as they are starting to tear around where the material is joined to the sole.

I find they fit big, I wear a 45 in most other cycling shoes and a 44 is spot on. Nice and ventilated, occasionally after a dirty ride, I have very dirty toes. I dumped the included spikes and replaced them with soccer/football cleats, works a lot better. The buckle is surprisingly robust.

All in all, I really like the shoes. I'm looking for another pair.

Fox Commando Bike Jersey - Half-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 23, 2009

Just don't like the 3/4 sleeve. Doesn't work for me. I either wear full sleeves if it's a hot/sunny day or I'm going DH'ing, or a shortsleeve for most days. Have also the found the jersey to be warm, perhaps due to all the iron on decals. Normally I'm a huge fox fan.

On the fence

Sherpani Rumba Superlight Kid Carrier

Sherpani Rumba Superlight Kid Carrier

Rating for this product: 3 January 7, 2009

I've been using this pack for about a year now. Took the kid out this past Sunday for a hike up 1,000 railroad tracks up the side of a mountain. When I last used the pack, three months ago, my son was happy and slept the hike. Yesterday he was just upset and cried most of the time. Figured out that there's a rough spot where multiple pieces of nylon come together on the lower part of the frame and it rubbed his legs raw. It seems to be a quality issue/design flaw. For that reason, I'm going to look into another pack. I like the light weight, but have decided that it's too minimalist for me. I jury rigged a Camelback to the back so I could drink water on the go (instead of having someone behind me get it out or flip the pack out). When it's loaded, it is heavy and somewhat difficult to get on my back. The fact that it doesn't compress very much while on my back hasn't been an issue for me, but I tend to hike in fairly open areas and I don't wear it in crowds of people. My son is 18 months old, probably 22 pounds and maybe 25 inches tall? He's not real big.
