Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Rating for this product: 3 2 days ago

while this is a nice comfy hat, it gives you the look of a conehead with its pointy cut. I returned it and got a (non pointy) MH transition dome which makes my giant head look much sexier.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

Excellent athletic fit; I'm 6'0", ~165 lbs, ~41" chest and a large is perfect on me with room for a few thin layers underneath. It's roomy in the chest and shoulders and sleeves are plenty long. The cut of the body is short- don't expect it to cover your butt. Unbeatable warmth to weight ratio- my large weighs 16.8 oz. Definitely not a durable outer shell on it so you wouldn't want to wear it hiking thru brush without a shell over it. Love it. The model I have is a yr or two old so it may be a bit different from current.

Alchemy Soft Shell

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

I have one of these that's a few yrs old so not sure how applicable this is to the current product, but here goes...Nice jacket, a slim athletic fit that's true to size IMO. I'm 6'0", 165 lbs, ~41" chest and the large fits perfectly- it's snug but I can wear two thin layers under it when hiking. Mine is still in great shape with no issues and I have no complaints. Not as warm as the MH Windstopper Tech jacket but I wear this under it as part of my layering system on cold days.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 27, 2009

I have both jackets and although I haven't done a side by side comparison, I leave one at work one at home, I would say they're going to be about the same as far as warmth and water resistance.

Marmot Leadville Jacket

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

Nice jacket, has an athletic fit that's true to size IMO. I'm 6'0", 165 lbs, ~41" chest and a size large, which I usually wear, is perfect on me. This is a lightweight jacket but it blocks the wind well for its weight. It's not as warm or heavy as something like the MH Windstopper Tech jacket but it works well in a layering system.

amphi pants

Ex Officio Nio Amphi Pant - Men's

Ex Officio Nio Amphi Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2009

good fitting pants- true to size and a comfy, somewhat relaxed, but not baggy, fit; some other brands I've tried like TNF and MH fit me too snugly for hiking. I'm a 32-33W, 32L and a medium is perfect for me. I had several older ex officio hiking pants that I wore out and replaced with these. The model I have may be one prior to these as mine have only one cargo pocket. Mine have a built in mesh brief which I cut out and also a mesh "vent" at the knee which I find unnecessary, but whatever. I realize these are supposed to be more for on-water use but I use them for hiking because ex officio doesn't seem to make a non-convertible hiking pant anymore like what I had. Love the fabric on these- dries super fast, good in temps down to ~30F if you're moving, yet I don't get too hot at higher temps like 70F in them.

The North Face Pamir Windstopper Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2009

nice gloves. I've had them for many years and they're showing very little wear. Fit is true to size. Very warm but they're not waterproof so they're not for all situations.

camelbak 100oz reservoir

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2009

I finally caved and bought my first camelbak about a yr ago. I like it overall but two negatives: it does give the water a funky plasticy taste and this doesn't go away- it's not horrible and I can deal with it. The hangar clip broke the second or third time I used it- the plastic is too thin for the weight of 3L of water. To "fix" it I just drilled a hole in the remaining plastic and used a wire tie which works fine. And of course they're not usable in colder temps as the hose will freeze up.

Thermarest Prolite

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

I have the older orange model, 20" X 72" X 1.5" thick- I think it's called the prolite 4 but not sure; it weighs 24.5 oz in the stuff sack. These newer lighter mats do not really self- inflate like the earlier t-rest mats, but c'mon, stop complaining about it. The t-rest I replaced was 1" thick and weighs the same as the 1.5" thick prolite model. Yeah, the old model self-inflated much more but which would you rather have? You can't have it all in backpacking! Anyway, great product for a great nite's sleep.

Marmot Lithium Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

October 22, 2009

Not sure how high you'll be camping but 15F or colder isn't uncommon as a nite low in the smokies at higher elevations (4000+ ft) in the winter months. So, no, this isn't too much of a bag. The fit in a long is roomy for me at 6' 165 lbs so you should be ok.

Lithium

Marmot Lithium Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Marmot Lithium Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

Roomy cut and yet a very warm bag- it lofts up huge. The provided stuff sack is too small for a long bag. Yes, it will fit, but it's too much of a struggle for me to save an inch or two of space. I replaced the stuff sack with a slightly larger sil-nylon sack. The long bag weighs exactly 3 lbs; 3 lbs 1 oz in my sil-nylon sack. It should have a velcro connection on the draft collar: why omit this this? this helps keep in warmth and helps with comfort and fit. I can't see leaving this feature out on a 0 degree $500 bag. It has a full length zipper which tends to hang. I could also deal with a slightly smaller cut above the waist to make it even lighter and warmer- I'm 6' ~165 lbs and have lots of space. Pricey but worth it.

MH Transition Zip T

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

I have this same item that's probably 6 yrs old and the fit/cut is much better on it- it's a uniform snug fit all over. The fit on the 2009 product (large) I received is odd: the waist and chest are snug as should be (like my original)- but the arms are huge in diameter. It's cut for someone with a 32" waist, 40" chest and 20" biceps- a combination that doesn't exist outside of animation. The arms are long enough, probably an inch longer than my original which is fine. Overall quality is great like all MH products. Dear MH- please get your sizing straight; I love your gear but you seem to be straying from your original sensible, uniform athletic cuts.

Hot Pants!

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

I think these were the first windstopper pants on the market, or at least the first I saw- and bought. I've had them for ~8 yrs and they should last me at least another 10 unless I trip into a campfire with them on or gain 30 lbs. I don't wear them that much as the temps need to be 30F or below or else I am too warm in them when hiking. The full length side zips are great for venting on steep climbs. My only complaint is the cut around the ankle is too small to fit over any boot and therefore requires a gaiter to be worn- this is fine as I always wear a short gaiter. I don't know if they're still cut like this but that's all I would change about them. I haven't had the issue with the velcro inside the waist that's mentioned so not sure if mine have that. Fit is true to size IMO; I'm 32W 32L and wear a medium.

Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

a great lightweight glove for when it's just cold enough where you need something on your hands but a thick windstopper type glove is too warm. They're thin enough to make almost all tasks possible when wearing them so I always carry them when BPing as a backup glove for camp chores. They're not waterproof or windproof and the palms are smooth. I love them because they fit like they were custom made for me.

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

Great product, super light and batteries last nearly forever. Better construction and design than the original Tikka. Great for reading in the tent and camp use. Not quite bright enough for dedicated night hiking but it will work for that when needed.

Simmerlite

MSR SimmerLite Stove

MSR SimmerLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

Simmers almost as well as the Dragonfly but it packs to ~ half the size and is much lighter; it's also better than a whisperlite since it's both lighter and simmers much better. If you want a compact, lightweight white gas stove with the ability to simmer, this is it.

I have both bags. The Pinnacle has a draft collar which I think makes it warmer. But it is also a 3lb 0oz bag and this is a 2lb 4oz bag for both in long.

Marmot Helium

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 September 15, 2009

I've had this bag for about a year. I consider myself an average sleeper for warmth and would rate it comfy at ~25F with long underwear.

Positives: light weight for the warmth- the long weighs 2lb 4oz in a 1 oz silnylon sack. Great construction like all marmot gear.

Negatives: no draft collar. IMO this is a bad omission as this one ounce addition can easily add 10F of warmth; I can feel the heat escaping across my upper chest. The cut is too big, esp from the waist up. You could fit a 300 pounder in this thing and I don't see too many 300 pounders backpacking :)

Summary: make the cut a bit smaller and add a draft collar; it would be both lighter and warmer and fit 99.9%
