Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra M+ Trail Running Shoe - Men's

May 26, 2009

Yes. These are great hiking shoes. I like using them for high mileage days, with a light-ish pack. Obviously you aren't going to get the same kind of support as with a dedicated backpacking boot, but the lacing system is more than adequate to keep your feet in place and as long as you're not carrying too much your ankles should be happy.

Patagonia Wool 2 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

April 11, 2009

Basically the wool and cap perform similarly. The wool can go much longer without getting smelly, which is convenient for longer trips. It won't dry nearly as quickly, but I find it's more comfortable against my skin and it keeps me warmer. It also lasts longer. Probably not worth it for double the price, but if you can find it cheaper its definitely an upgrade.

Swix Moly Fluoro Base Conditioning Wax

March 17, 2009

You iron it in to the base of your skis with a wax iron. The proper technique to doing this is a bit complicated, but basically you're going to be crayoning it into the base and then ironing it in (gently, so as not to burn your bases). So you'd be putting it on as a base to protect your skis, and then applying more specific waxes on top of it.

Swix T72 Waxing Iron

February 6, 2009

Different types of waxes will iron in best at different temperatures. Generally colder waxes require more heat. A good iron/wax will include a chart of temperature ranges. Of course, a Swix iron will only tell you what temps to use with Swix waxes..so if you're using another brand of wax you'll need to get the specs on it. Basically, it varies..so make sure whatever wax you get includes some guidelines

Burton Clash Snowboard

February 4, 2009

The clash is a great board for snowboarding on the groomers, all mtn, and runnin through the park. I would start on a board a little less expensive then bump up to this one after you've come to be familiar with the sport. My 2 cents: I wouldn't necessarily discourage you from starting out on this board. Like the commenter above said, it is a good all-around board, so you'd be getting a lot of bang for your buck with a board you can grow into. Also, it's not a ton of money for a new board- i think you'll notice a pretty serious drop-off in quality the next step down. Length wise, you're not gonna notice a huge difference between the two. The 160 will be a little bit more stable and the 158 a little more maneuverable. Probably err on the larger - it will be more versatile once you've mastered the basics.

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

This is my go to layer for high-speed winter pursuits. Works great as a light fleece for the summer/shoulder seasons as well, and is super compressible to boot. Good for backpacking, good for wearing to class...All in all an extremely versatile and comfortable layer. If you're looking for sheer warmth, go up a weight or two, but for all around performance and breathability this piece is a good choice.

Burton Profile Mitten - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

All around good mitts for winter pursuits. I used an older version for for 3 or 4 seasons before they started to thin out and get chilly. The features are excellent and the nose-wipe works great. I especially liked the length of them, having bigger mitts is great for keepin the white stuff outside of your layers..

Really happy with these bindings. I got a pair (07 I think) recently when I got a new board. They are a huge improvement both in looks and function over older models (which I liked as well. I got the black color, but kinda wish I'd gone for yellow - so ace. I use them on just about every type of terrain possible and have been very pleased with their performance all around.

Merrell Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex Hiking Shoe - Men's

Merrell Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 26, 2009

I had a pair of these I used for about a year. I generally liked them and the waterproofing was excellent. However, I ran into problems with the soles- the grippy nobs started coming off, exposing the midsole underneath. They are also quite wide, so they work best for high volume feet. Generally they were good shoes, but i've since switched to Salomon shoes which thus far have been more durable and fit my (narrow-ish) feet a bit better.

K2 Brigade Snowboard

January 12, 2009

it's a great all-around board and riding it will make you a better snowboarder. however it won't be as forgiving as some of the more introductory boards out there. if you're committed to riding and don't get discouraged easily this will be a solid board to learn on, as well as one that will still be fun to mess around on once you've reached at the next level.beginner boards usually are softer and will be more conducive to initiating turns- burton makes a bunch of good options in and around this price range

Patagonia Winter Guide Jacket - Men's

December 26, 2008

getting a custom color might be a bit difficult. i would recommend going for an ordinary black jacket and if the trim is an absolute must, getting it added by a seamstress (or the like) as an aftermarket accessory. This is a great jacket that looks professional and is versatile, and does indeed come in black. so it could potentially fit the bill. perhaps another option could be to get gold printing/embroidery? this was always the method we used with our jackets in similar situations...and a much easier one than finding a manufacturer who can run one-off (or in your case 200-off) garments.

Patagonia Thrift Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 15, 2008

Really super hanging out shorts. They are comfortable and the fit is great - only issue is this season's colors which are kinda lackluster. The one time I played golf this summer I wore these and had a blast. They're versatile because they can be worn to somewhat formal events, as well as just chilling around the campfire.

Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

December 12, 2008

Capilene wicks moisture faster, dries faster, and is less expensive. Merino is a natural fiber which is super comfortable, doesn't stink, and keeps you warm while it's wet. I don't care for merino as a skiing base layer because it doesn't dry that quickly, but a lot of people do. Merino's killer for wearing around when it's chilly though

Versatile, and Comfy to boot.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

Since I picked up a pair of these i've become a huge fan. I've used my pair for everything from marathon-length hikes to casual trail running. I've never had any issues with fit either, which is a rarity with my feet. The support is more than adequate, the lacing system is foolproof (i'm qualified to say this) and they feel great on your feet even after a long day of effort.

Also, the regular (non GTX) version is more breathable and dries much more quickly, which is a boon for situations like long, lightweight, multi-day hikes where getting wet is inevitable but getting dry is necessary.

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

The Retro-X is a superb casual fall/winter jacket. It has very thick piling and the Windstopper barrier is excellent. Mine is a size larger than I would normally wear (Med. instead of Sm.) so that I can use it as a jacket over a sweatshirt or other bulky garment. It wouldn't be my first choice for any sort of hike or other strenuous activity, as it isn't very breathable, but it is perfect for around town/hanging out. And...Patagonia comes out with new color options every year so check out older seasons if you don't see one you like from the newest season.

Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack - 1831cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

This is another stellar product from BD. It isn't huge, but that's the point- it's the perfect size for moving quickly. I have used mine for multi-pitch climbs and am very pleased with the fit. It sits high above a harness and your shoulders have plenty of space to move. I also like this pack for overnights, it fits a sleeping bag, pad, stove+ food, a couple layers and then rides comfortably for however long you hike.

Bottom line: BD called it the Speed for a reason.

Well, they look super fast, which can become a problem when you just want to wear them around town. They don't fog easily, the optics are good, and the Zebra lenses adjust quickly and to an appropriate darkness. The strap also works very well. It's great for nordic skiing or technical trail runs... Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

December 8, 2008

The cuffs are quite fitted, but they are also very stretchy. The older R2's had a more closed off cuff that Patagonia doesn't seem to be doing with the Regulator line anymore. If you have massive forearms (lotsa climbing) it might be a bit tight, but again they are very stretchy. The hooded version also has thumb loops, which the regular R1 does not...so there is a bit more fabric in that area.

Patagonia R1 Flash Fleece Pullover - Mens

Patagonia R1 Flash Fleece Pullover - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2007

The R1 Flash is probably my most-worn article of clothing. It's great over medium capilene with a shell on top for shredding on the hill, or even by itself for nordic skiing. I also use it over a t-shirt for cooler summer nights and wearing to class, etc. Also great for backpacking because it's so ridiculously compressible. If you want a fleece to wear alone in the winter, opt for something a little heavier, but the R1 is surprisingly warm, and extremely versatile.
